Sinds OB 2.7.10 the image from the Maveric type D camera, as shown in the Viper, is very blurry. It is hard to make out the targets, especially on city streets.

The aiming cross is also ....i don't know how to describe it. I see two horizontal lines, but the aiming cross seems to be located a bit higher on the MFD. Only when a target is acquired the cross is clearly visible together with horizontal and vertical lines that extend all the way to the border of the MFD.

Found the button to make the screenshots.

Reproduction steps to create these visuals:

start in flight

select A-G

select WPN on left MFD

leave mode in VIS

scroll marker on HUD to target area

press TMS up

....see almost nothing

....many attempts with TMS up to lock the target. Pointing 'the middle of the screen' works best, but without the crosshairs it is very difficult.

Image 'mav mfd' shows the initial situation. 3 horizontal lines.

Image 'target not visible' shows how difficult it is to see the target (FOV was pressed)

Image 'cross gone' is the result of TMS UP short (top horizontal line gone, no aiming cross, no lock)

Image 'misaligned' shows what happens when lock is obtained after repeatedly trying to lock, knowing where the target should be.

Track files shows it all

Many thanks for your detailed guide. I agree the Mav D is very blurry: I get the same thing on my end. The thing is, I've not used the Viper very much until now, so I have no idea how it was before. I'll ask other testers to take a look and let you know what they think.

I don't think that's too far off for the -65D IIR video. If you compare it to the H CCD video it's a little more "smudgy" but not by much. If you look at some GW-era D footage it's not super crisp, granted those have been captured on magnetic tape through AVTR so it's not all that bad. Tanks are fuzzy marshmallows. I feel it's pretty darn close.

So yeah, thats probably pretty realistic especially for a D mav.

IRL IR sensors have a bunch of problems like this. I.E. not super clear, issues with finding proper focus. Honestly you are lucky there isn't more thermal clutter in that image tbh. IR sensors are not magical predator vision. ESPECIALLY early mech scan stuff like the Mav-D seeker.

IDK how much of the IR rework is in game, but you might try it with more IR favorable conidtions, i.e. night and cool weather.

That's why it's at its best when used with a TGP. What you're getting looks correct, IRL, Mav video isn't of great quality. Boresight mode is there for a reason, you sometimes have better luck pointing your nose at your target and locking on visually than fiddling with the display. The TGP largely makes up for that, although it's not a perfect picture, either, particularly if you use digital zoom.

@Flappie: thanks for confirming. Please have a look at the manual for comparison.

Beside the blurryness, the aiming cross is also an issue.
The manual states:

"Use the TQS cursor to place the target within the crosshairs on the WPN format, then press TMS forward to designate the target. The crosshairs will close on the target. Confirm that the missile is tracking the correct target, the pointer cross is not flashing, and that the target is in range."

It doesn't seem to work like that anymore. The aiming cross is not 'open' so i can't 'place the target within the crosshairs'. Even if i could see it.

In previous version, i could acquire the target at about 7 to 10 miles, now it is 2 to 3.

It does look like it was changed in the latest update. If you look at old videos of the maverick in use it's a lot easier to spot targets with it.

The update seems realistic however based on what people are reporting? Might have been inaccurate before.

Yeah with the FLIR update, people will be sad if ED does a more realistic job. ED's original FLIR/IR model was "very optimistic".

I don't see any difference with this early video by Wags:

(AGM-65G camera seen on the right MFD - slave mode with no target yet)

And here's the AMG-65D camera from your track:
