I suspect I'm doing something wrong in my shutdown sequence, and most guides/manuals don't go into much detail about shutdown procedures. I would expect shutting the cutoff would immediately stop the engine, but for some reason I always get this sputtering effect as if the engine is still trying to run. It's not module specific, but does seem a bit more pronounced in the Anton. What's the proper precedure to avoid this kind of sputtering?

In real life, if you turn off the fuel, the engine just stops. This is not the case in DCS. If you want it to stop without sputter, turn off the magnetos.

You can try closing fuel lever, this way engine should not splatter.

I brought this issue some time ago, in case P-51 or spit which splatter a lot, but with no effect.

There is maybe a  1000 or more videos on YouTube, when engines are shot off not a single puf can be heard.

And this generic splatter sound dating back P-51 release time, applied to radial engine that is just biggest MEH!

What exactly do the cutoff/mixture levers do? I thought they were a second fuel lever of sorts, so that closing the cutoff would effectly do the same as shutting the fuel lever.

Cut off is not the same as closing tanks, cutoff is special mechanism shutting off engine and it's location is in carburetor or in injection system. It does pretty much same thing as fuel tank shut off valve but location of this is at very end of fuel system not beginning.

Shutting fuel tanks will kill engine but it will take much longer.

Cutoff via dedicated valve will shut off the engine but fuel in fuel lines will remain.

Shutting off via magnetos will flood engine with fuel and it is very dangerous in RL operations, but in game you don't even need to shut engine off just hit ESC and done 🙂

It's weird how we have such detailed switchology but no enforcement of procedure. I can start most of the warbirds without priming at all, and the Anton's inertial starter can be pressed only 3 seconds and still crank the engine. The Spitfire's startup differs from real-world videos as well.

I was able to stop the Mossie without sputter using the plunger things behind the seat, but I can't remember the exact process at the moment. It had something to do with the timing of pulling them out, then pushing them back in.
