MBot Posted February 5, 2005 Posted February 5, 2005 Today I created a little A-10 mission. Because there was no terrain to hide I wanted to mask my approach behind a big town ( the russian area has some realy nice towns ). I then notices that SAM units tracked and shoot me trough buildings. This spoiled my whole mission idea, as A-10 in the flatter part of germany would have regulary used towns as cover. Now I am aware that calculating buildings blocking radar would be too much to ask. I guess no CPU could handel this. But as the player weapons can hit buildings ( -> buildings already have a hitbox ), it would be nice if also SAMs and AAA fire would be obstructed by buildings. If that wouldn't cause a major fps hit, that is a little request for 1.2.
Starlight Posted February 5, 2005 Posted February 5, 2005 a further problem is that you can't see a SAM launch made behind a building. so this is a huge advantage for SAM units.
MBot Posted February 5, 2005 Author Posted February 5, 2005 I just got the idea, when the Ka-50 gets flyable buildings will almost certanly block enemy fire. I bet the trees/forests will also obstruct fire in 1.2. Otherwise there would be no point in flying a helo...
KuostA Posted February 5, 2005 Posted February 5, 2005 yea, agreed, If we do get any sort of helo, every ground object will really have to be redone and be actually solid or it what spoil the whole idea of flying a helo sim. You have to hide yourself behind anything you can find, trees, houses, buildings, ect. I hope we can therefore use the solid ground objects as part of our tactics. This will also give new life to flying down low and dirty in fighter jets, as then we would have to actually avoid trees...I've always flown right THROUGH them.
SUBS17 Posted February 6, 2005 Posted February 6, 2005 Yeah its true about the trees, you can definately fly through them. Not good for a helo Sim. [sIGPIC] [/sIGPIC]
Kula66 Posted February 6, 2005 Posted February 6, 2005 You can change this ... so that you go bang when you hit them!! James
Caretaker Posted February 6, 2005 Posted February 6, 2005 Hmm now I'm a bit confused... from all I know, buildings have always been solid in Lock On and blocked fire? Never seen a town go up in flames because of a few tanks which fired at targets outside of the town? For a helo sim, the LOS problem would be more critical of course - ground units can't hit you behind buildings, but actually they rather shouldn't even see you when you're well covered. As for the trees, you can currently fly through them for two main reasons: 1) the AI doesn't recognize them and could crash over mountain forests where they sometimes get very low 2) they are an option in the graphics settings, and in multiplayer it would be bad to either collide with something that isn't displayed, or make them solid only for the people who see them... so, equal ground for all people regardless of settings. As for the A-10s using towns for cover in Germany, to be honest I have a hard time imagining how this would work... should be rather the other way around, vehicles hiding in towns from A-10s ;) Caretaker ED Beta Test Team
MBot Posted February 6, 2005 Author Posted February 6, 2005 Well I was quite surprised to see it too, but the SAMs ( Osa ) were flying straight trough the towns. Perhaps this is a bug that only affects some weapon systems ? I will have to run some tests. As for the A-10 covering behind towns. Run some missions in the north eastern part of the map. There are some big ( and tall ) russian towns ( typisch sovietischer Plattenbau-Stil ). They provide massive cover and can completly mask your ingres, if the AD units are reasonable close to the town. After I tried this I have no problem to imagine how A-10 would have operated in the lower parts of Germany.
MBot Posted February 6, 2005 Author Posted February 6, 2005 Ok, did some quick tests. On the follwoing units the SAMs went straight trough the buildings: -Osa -Igla -Buk -Roland Then there were some, wich would fly trough most bulildings, but sometimes they did explode on one: -Strela-1 -Strela-10 -Tunguska Also worth to note is, that the Strela-1 only seems to track targets it can actualy see trough LOS. Tough perhaps I am just seeing things... Please take this only as indication. I did not enough tests to conclude that SAM X everytime flys trough buildings. Perhaps it is a global bug for all SAMs and only some few buildings can be hit by them. I have to do more testing. Here are some pics how it looks like: http://mbot.catclan.ch/osa.jpg http://mbot.catclan.ch/tunguska.jpg http://mbot.catclan.ch/buk.jpg http://mbot.catclan.ch/roland.jpg

Skywall23 Posted February 7, 2005 Posted February 7, 2005 Thats good to hear Chizh. :) I hate transparent objects...
Greenies Posted February 9, 2005 Posted February 9, 2005 It's issue for 1.2 We'll do non transparent buildings for SAM missiles and adjust LOS. It always makes me happy to hear talk of future projects :D It's a lot better than sitting for months on end asking yourself, "Ok, what now?" And 1.2 being a heli add-on, HEY, I always wanted to fly a helicopter in this wonderful LOMAC world! 8) I want to get away, I wanna fly away. Yeah, yeah, yeah! - Lenny Kravitz - Fly Away
KuostA Posted February 10, 2005 Posted February 10, 2005 wow, thanks for clarifying and going through the troubles of testing it as well MBot. Those were some very descriptive pictures there..showed exactly what we are talking about. I never knew this problem was to this scale. Im amazed to find out that All those missles are just flying strait through buildings. That is one heckuva major flaw that Ive overlooked until now. Well anywayse, its great to hear that it will at least be fixed in 1.2 for sure, BUT has it been rectified in 1.1? i wouldnt mind waiting longer for them to fix a major bug like this...especialy with the new feature just shown previously on how it is now possible to place objects like igla's on the roof's of buildings themselves!
Skywall23 Posted February 10, 2005 Posted February 10, 2005 especialy with the new feature just shown previously on how it is now possible to place objects like igla's on the roof's of buildings themselves! Yup its a cool new feature. For those who didnt see it yet:
SUBS17 Posted February 11, 2005 Posted February 11, 2005 Yeah I like the idea of a shilka on a roof, thats going to be fun to destroy. [sIGPIC] [/sIGPIC]
