Just got OpenXR to work, had some issues with the single dll method and opencomposite launcher, neither worked... But @Supmua your zip file worked without issues, so thanks! Have you tried to use OvGME to reinstall these files after an update?
Can't say I noticed any performance uplift over SteamVR but it was very nice to have quicker DCS start up and not having blinking loading screens.

Today I ran flew the Viper on NTTR with 39PPD and pretty much every DCS setting on max except MSAA 2x and SSAA,SSLR, SSAO off. Still 50-60 fps on the ground and 60-80 in air and the most insane visuals, my god.

Regarding my lens reflections: I'm in contact with Varjo to check whether or not it's a hardware issue.

Glad it’s working well for you.  I don’t use OvGME so can’t comment.

The latest beta (3.8) has it which is now called motion smoothing in the settings, but it is broken (causes stuttering and warping artifacts) and is currently being looked into.

Interesting I have not seen any feedback over on Discord regarding Motion Smoothing - are you participating in the beta? That sounds discouraging.

It’s only being discussed in the beta channel.  There’re also other issues with the beta so it’s a good thing they did not release this.

Well crap, I shall turn off my hopefulness for a bit. Thanks for the info. Yeah if they released it in a bad condition that would not be good at all, especially since it is Varjo and a very high price device. Thankfully I can at least get mine to where it is enjoyable even with no reprojection happening.

Are the instructions in the OP out of date now?

I got a new rig with a 4090 and I'm having some problems. First, when I run Varjo Base, it starts SteamVR which appears to be running (ie. in the steam library it is green and it says "running"), but the VR button at the top of the steam window is white indicating that SteamVR is not running. If I click it, I get an error message saying that the app is already running. If I shut down the varjo base, when I click the SteamVR button, it appears to load, but I get an error that I cannot connect to the headset. I did not have any of these problems on my 3080TI system.

The Aero is also stuttering. I get a very noticeable stutter on the desktop in the Varjo workstation, and I also have it in DCS at the menu screen and in flight. FPS is great at 90+/-, but that stuttering is a killer.

What am I missing?

Thanks.

Update: steamVR seems to run normally, if I launch it from within the varjo base menu tool. However, the stutter is still there.

Questions to you all who use OpenXR in DCS:

What PPD do you use? And do you override the resolution in OpenXR Toolkit? If yes, to which resolution?

Are you using the latest Varjo software? You can also ask to become a beta tester in their discord. The latest beta that just came out has decent motion smoothing with DCS, not perfect though.

I use the highest PPD setting (~4100 horizontal pixels per screen). Think of PPD setting as the default desktop resolution for your monitor. For in-game resolution, I typically use ~3200 horizontal pixels with override but this is simply about finding the right balance between performance and image quality for your own setup.

Ok so question for ya - why set the default so high when you are lowering the resolution that far?

Because when I watch movies or do other things in VR, the images and GUI look pristine.  The same reason I don’t set my 4KTV to 2K even though I might run some games with raytracing at 2K.

Ok makes sense thanks. I run mine at pretty high resolution (3800x3200 app) which is the default high and long as I can maintain 45 fps plus I am ok as far as smoothness. However things off in distance looking pretty rough - like coming in for carrier trap at 5km the supercarrier looks all fuzzy. But man that cockpit clarity is incredible.

How are the reprojection artefacts compared to SteamVR or OpenComposite? If I can get rid of the blurry ghosts of nearby aircraft, I'm ready to jump in to the Varjo experience.

Not any better than Vive or Index at present.  Remember that these use generated (fake) frames, so very fast moving objects can still show artifacts.  It’s still not ready though that’s why they haven’t released it to mainstream.  In games that use depth info such as MSFS, it taxes CPU frametimes heavily resulting in low fps even though stuttering is minimized.

For me the best way to fly in DCS is to get my fps close to 90 as much as I can.  The second best is a toss up between current motion smoothing with occasional artifacts vs smooth locked 45 fps with blurry ground objects during high speed runs.

Thank you for the detailed response. I currently have a 4090/5800x3d/64GB system, and struggle to not go lower than 60fps with the Reverb, so was hoping for a magic bullet with the Varjo's reprojection. Oh well, thankfully 2D is still incredible.

Hello Varjo Areo owners,
I got myself one as a Christmas present for DCS and Il2-Sturmovik.
Looked at the instructions and the comments here, I wonder how you do it, I'm totally frustrated with buying the Varjo!
I would be very interested in what FPS you have in DCS and what settings you have.
I have an RTX 3090, I9-10980XE 5GHz, 64GB RAM 4GHz, M2 drive and get set to VR mode in DCS and 32 PPD (Low) in Varjo Base, and only get 20FPS in DCS and 45FPS in Il2?

🥴

Greetings Tigereagle

There is no magic bullet for any setup, it’s all about compromise in settings and things that sound too good to be true are usually just that.

I listed my settings for high fps (90) at the end of the very first post.  You should get at least 45 with your setup using that in typical free flight missions.

They call it motion smoothing now, expect to see around 2ms of GPU frametime increase in DCS (at least on my setup). So this is not for people with weak GPU especially after 2.8beta update as that also taxes the GPU frametime as well.  I’d say rtx 3080 minimum.

Release notes:

Varjo Base, release version 3.8

December 21, 2022
This Varjo Base release version only supports XR-3, VR-3, and Varjo Aero.
Users of VR-1, VR-2, VR-2 Pro, and XR-1 Developer Edition should continue using Varjo Base release 3.7.2.

This release includes improvements and bug fixes to existing features.

Introduced a new setting named Motion smoothing that improves image quality by predicting and smoothing movement in applications. This setting is released as Beta and it replaces Motion Prediction in earlier releases. Read more about Motion smoothing.
Fixed motion smoothing artefacts when occlusion mask was enabled.
Fixed incorrect motion smoothing behavior when depth buffer was enabled in Microsoft Flight Simulator or in other applications where the depth buffer size did not match the color buffer size.
Known issues when using Enabled (Beta) option:
----> Enabled setting does not have optimized performance yet, and it can drop the application fps significantly when turned on. To improve application performance, you can try adjusting application settings to lower the image quality requirements.
----> Occasional ghosting or micro stuttering when turning head.
----> Visual artefacts and distortions in static user interface contents, for example application menus, may appear, especially if the user interface includes transparent elements.

3
[7:32 AM]
----------
Added new options in Vertical synchronization setting in the Headset tab: Automatic, Enabled – Fixed 45 fps, and Enabled – Fixed 30 fps.
Connected game pads are now displayed with a dedicated icon in the positional tracking status area in Varjo Base.
Added a new mixed reality camera setting to enable adjusting the sharpness of the mixed reality camera video. (XR-3)
Improved the way the Headset view video recordings are cropped to make them more cinematic.
Added a possibility to include the Varjo logo and device name in screenshots and video recordings.
Reduced memory consumption for marker tracking to help prevent crashes of Varjo Tracking process caused by lack of RAM.
Fixed an issue that caused 3rd party tracking plugins not to load in Varjo Base. The issue only affected plugins built with the Tracking Plugin SDK with 3.7 release.
 (edited)

[7:34 AM]
Varjo Reality Cloud:

Added support for uploading and storing Autodesk VRED application files to Reality Cloud.
Added support for starting a single-user session from a VRED file.
Added support for creating a collaborative session using VRED files that have been uploaded to Reality Cloud.
Added support for creating  a Unity or Unreal Engine application session without storing any files to Reality Cloud.
Added  new functionality that allows user to select organization when creating a session if they belong to more than 1 organization.
Improved the error message given when trying to use Reality Cloud with an unsupported version by providing more accurate information about the supported Varjo Base versions.

Developer tools and APIs:

Eye Tracking:
Exporting eye tracking data in Analytics Window: Added new data item, relativeToUnixEpochTimestamp, that is recorded to the CSV file. The data item records gaze frame timestamps since the Unix Epoch (time-of-day) timestamps.
Added API to convert from Varjo system timestamps to the time-of-day timestamps expressed as Unix Time.
Open XR:
Fixed a compatibility issue with Vive OpenXR API, which caused some of the Varjo OpenXR functionality not working correctly if Vive Console was installed on the same PC.

In a quick test I did not like it. The HUD showed some kind of ghosting.

At the current state it is decent if your head remains mostly stationary, and if fps stays above 45.  Not for driving games though, too much artifacts.  That’s why it’s still beta but they decided to release it for public testing now.

Sounds like I may prefer to keep running DCS as I do now, with no reprojection or vsync. Long as  my fps are above 45 fps in Steam VR I can have a pleasurable fairly smooth experience with not much stuttering. Anyways will find out here shortly how I like it.

It’s a toss up for me between stutter-free flying with blurry ground objects as you fly by vs no blurriness with occasional jittering.  Need to do more flying to decide but work has been busy.

Oh hell no, absolutely kills my performance. Previously I was running 45 fps + with a decent experience, now in the 20's and looks awful.

Definitely beta not quite ready for prime time. Release notes mentioned the performance issue, just worse than I thought it might be. I could only try my flight for like 5 minutes after the take off, it was really bad imho.
