What sort of performance increase does Dynamic Foveated Rendering offer on a top-end system, like my 4090/7950x3d? Is it enough to maintain a 60fps minimum in a relatively busy singleplayer mission?
-
I think DLSS simply won't work with DCS - looking at other flight sims, such as MSFS, all digital cockpit displays become extremely blurry to the point of almost being unusable. This may limit DCS' implementation of DLSS to aircraft with analogue steam guages.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately I'm not interested in free flying or basic missions - I play DCS mostly in campaign mode, or co-op with mates. These missions tend to be relatively complex. Alas, looks like I'll have to wait a while, but at least my wallet loves me.

I've scanned this thread, but can't find the info I'm looking for. Basically, will my 5800x3d (soon to be 7950x3d) + 4090 system run the Aero at 90fps courtesy of the new DFR, during most missions? If so, I think I'm gonna have to bite the bullet and upgrade from my G2. My wallet will hate me, but if I can get reprojection-free visuals with this killer HMD, I have to give it a go.

Quest Pro vs G2 Impressions - 4090/7950x3D

Thanks for the fantastic post, much appreciated. As a Reverb G2 owner, I find the reprojection artefacts to be terrible during A2A dogfights, so I only fly A2G in VR now. How does the Oculus compare to the G2 in this regard? Are there still ghost-like shadow blobs around nearby aircraft? -
I dread I dread to think what your fps is... 35 to 40ish?

I have called for this for years. The suggestion is shot down by 99% of the community, who say ED shouldn't waste development resources on it. The thing is, performance tweaking is a HUGE part of setting up DCS. Most of us do it, VR users even more regularly. Getting everyone testing with identical methodology via an integrated benchmark would save so much pain. ED has never commented on building a benchmarking tool, but perhaps with all these new performance improvements, they'll spend a few days putting something simple together?
-
These artefacts are caused by motion reprojection. It doesn't matter which method you use, all forms of motion reprojection have very similar issues. This is why VR games are meant to be played with zero reprojection. Unfortunately DCS is too demanding to be able to run at native frame rate, so we're forced to use reprojection, or be happy with stuttering instead.

The performance impact would be insignificant, identical to clear weather turbulence.

Is it going to be worth going 3090 to 4090?

Wait until you play games with Frame Generation - you can add another 20% boost on top. And despite early concerns, my experience with it has been amazing - couldn't notice a single flaw with the way games are displayed, and I also barely notice the added latency. -
DCS's handling of shadows is utterly atrocious - they've always been a huge hit to performance, but 2.8 has made it even worse. Is there a way to set up shadows so that only cockpit shadows work, and not object shadows?

My DCS VR Performance Optimization | 4090 Aero

Yep, I find VR is much more acceptable in A2G missions, as motion reprojection artefacts of nearby aircraft are less commonplace. -
investigating Large performance drop in VR after updating to 2.8

Given his role at ED is PR/community management, I assume this is legit. It would appear that the VR audience for DCS is way smaller than 2D, otherwise these changes would never have gone ahead. -
My DCS VR Performance Optimization | 4090 Aero

Fantastic post, this is the level of detail required to do accurate benchmarking. By the way, I believe NVIDIA control panel MSAA does not work in DCS. So it looks like you get around 45fps on the ground, but then 90fps up in the air? Is the latter still true when you're in a furball with multiple other aircraft? I have an identical PC setup to you, and despise the reprojection artefacts, so need at least 75fps to maintain a level of fluidity. -
Thank you for the detailed response. I currently have a 4090/5800x3d/64GB system, and struggle to not go lower than 60fps with the Reverb, so was hoping for a magic bullet with the Varjo's reprojection. Oh well, thankfully 2D is still incredible.
-
How are the reprojection artefacts compared to SteamVR or OpenComposite? If I can get rid of the blurry ghosts of nearby aircraft, I'm ready to jump in to the Varjo experience.
-
Couple of quick questions for Varjo owners - has Varjo delivered motion reprojection yet? And what's performance demands like in comparison to a G2?
-
90fps? Is that in a normal mission and/or online? I didn't think 90fps was possible in the Aero.

Is it going to be worth going 3090 to 4090?

I honestly believe it's more likely we'll see CPUs get 50% faster in about 5 years time, before DCS fixes the single thread choke up.
