utc time? Anyways, I will be on when I feel ok for flying... can't tell in advance, but looks like SimHQ.com is nice to meet there to see whos up for flying..

Everyone just pop in and see whoever is in the BS room and say hi and get some flying/training in..

I do fine on target ID and locking up, setting correct weapon and killing the target.

My biggest problem is when I am heading back to base and all of the sudden I hear the blades hit and it's over.

Looking out at the scenery going by if there are no trees, I don't notice I'm going to fast until I hear the warning, after a couple of times it seems the rotor gets worn or something and fails eventually before the warning sounds.

I have to start using AP to take me home I guess.:joystick:

SimHQ

.

I'm a regular on the SimHQ server and they're pretty good about getting it back on line. You can PM Goud and that usually gets results.

If you guys want to meet up ... I'd love to give some flying a try in a group. West Coast ... Way WEST ... :D

---------------------------------------------

As for difficulties with the sim (this is no game..shame on anyone calling it a game) ... I find it difficult to find the enemy at times. You can turn on the tags to help out while you learn the sim. Then shut em' off later. BTW ... the KA-50 is an older platform weapons/targeting wise ... so take that as it were.

Otherwise ... the rest of the sim is easy to learn if you have a background in helicopters in a sim. It's the folks who thought this was going to be like Flanker or LockOn ... they're gaining a new respect for us rotor-heads ... :D

My approach to the Sim was that of a RL pilot take small steps and progress this is not something where you can just jump in and be blasting stuff in 5 or so min if it is they you are in arcade mode lol…what I did was first read the manual. Then watch the producers notes. training tracks useless for me they are in Russian. Since getting the sim when the Russian copy was made available to DL I have in that amount of time got all the start up stuff down and flight is pretty good still a bit touchy the trimming concept is still a bit alien to me but im getting there. I have just taken my first steps in to weapons and like flight a lot there to learn and hovering wile targeting is a chore as well but for those who have mastered flight it’s a whole lot easier then if I had just jumped in took off and tried combat…and I still have lots to learn I would imagine it will take quite a wile to learn enough to be a really effective pilot.

I am so far behind you guys. I am struggling but trying. I always do a manual startup, and then i am continuing to try and stabalize this beast,, I have a ways to go. Not even trying weapons etc.

If it helps, before lifting off, centralize all your controls, and press Ctrl+T to reset the trim. In this state, the helicopter is designed no to roll on the ground. When taking off, forward cyclic is required to maintain the hover.

When I pass below around 80 km/h and I'm wanting to hover, I reset the trim, and hold slightly forward cyclic. Once I'm very close to a hover, I centralize all the controls except slight forward cyclic, then trim.

If you want to do a quick stop with a combat load, I find +40° pitch to 150 km/h with the cyclic held down, then I adjust pitch attitude to maintain level flight, whilst raising collective. By 100 km/h I've got about 6 or 7 degrees of pitch on the collective, and I make a point of not dropping it below 7 degrees one I'm below 50 km/h. I then regulate V/S rate with pitch, and use collective (not dropping below 7 degrees!).

When I'm close to the hover, I'm pulling around 9 degrees of collective, and I watch V/S very closely.

Best regards,

Tango.

That's exactly what I was practicing last night. I started out around about 180kph at 100meters for some "quick stops". I then took it down on the deck and tried to do it with only 1-2 meters change in altitude...doing it at 10 meters was a blast!

For me, the realization that the aircraft hovers at about 5 degrees nose up was the turning point. For a typical transition to hover from forward flight, I will trim to 5 degrees nose up and then pull to 10 degrees up to bleed off airspeed. As I slow down to 10 kph, I will drop to 5 degrees up and re-trim. Works like a treat every time!

Yeah, I read another thread about the trim. Just before take off, I set the trim so the the bottom of the diamond is sitting right on the center of the cross hairs,,, seems to work well. I dont do any more trimm after that though,,,,Sounds like you guys do alot more trimming more frequent,,, hope thats not needed? What a pain if so ,, to much other stuff to work on,,,

That's smart to set the trim to a neutral-position on take off just so that you don't have any nasty surprises on take off.

Trimming is not really needed, it just means you don't have to hold your joystick away from the sprung center area for long periods of time. Trimming your aircraft properly makes it seem to want to fly consistently instead of fighting it the whole time, that's all.

Also autopilot modes (RTE, auto hover) only have 20% authority over the control channels so if the trim center is more than 20% authority away from the position that the autopilot wants in order to do its job, it won't be able to autopilot.

today, for me, it's only a hard to master flight sim. a kick in the teeth,

to tell you the truth. hope some day i'll get to the gunman and ask

him some rounds, rockets and stuff like that.

my list of priorities include better TIR/zoom handling abilities, getting

used to the trimming function and managing to keep the blades apart

from each other (that's hard to explain but it happens sometimes).

for me, it's almost always this way:

Yeah, I hope I dont find myself having to deal with trimming to often. Like I said, I set the trim before I release the break, usually, I will climb to about 150 or so, steady her a bit then hit auto hover,,, then I do an external view and see how she is doing,,, and its usually very good at that point,,,, then i go for a short run and turn then I try and steady her before committing to auto hover,,, when she seems pretty stable, I hit auto hover and I find myself either slipping sideways or backwards? At that point I try to compensate with stick and ruddle gently to steady her,,, doesnt really work to well most times,,, then if I decided to tap on the trim a tad here and there,,, thats when I usually start loosing control? Ill keep working on it.

This is exactly when I find trimming invaluable. I won't even attempt to explain my preferred method here but I can certainly second the various comments in this and other threads that trimming is absolutely key to controlled flight in this sim. I've still not got it down 100% (getting the timing right between releasing the trim button and allowing the cyclic and pedals to centre still catches me out sometimes) but I'm getting there and when it starts working well it's like one of those "Eureka!" moments. Keep practising, it will pay off :)

Thanks for the helpful tactics advice in this thread...

After 35 hours of KA-50 flight, I feel pretty comfortable with flying, hovering, and the systems to put missiles or bullets on target especially if I am redoing a mission and know the general area of where to find the targets, but I'm really struggling with the tactics on how to successfully discover and take on multiple difficult enemies when I don't know where the enemy is ahead of time, I always seem to run into them or spot them at the same time that Ekran Betty is telling me "Attack Missile at 12'oclock" and then it's a mad scramble of dropping flares while shooting rockets or trying to evade and pull back out of range without taking mortal damage, only occasionally successfully, most times not (having a hard time with the mission called "Patrol" on the English version as a current example, the manpads + Shilkas + BMPs all seem to spot me at the same time as I spot them and the canyon doesn't allow much room to maneuver).

At this point I end up having to pick between crawling at 70 kph to avoid stumbling into anything too quickly but taking ages to actually get to the target area, or flying at 170 kph and not spotting things early enough to avoid being attacked first.

I continue to be thankful and look for every bit of helpful tactics advice I see here and on SimHQnet, and meanwhile I've postponed doing the campaigns as I get killed too often the first time I do a mission for now, until I learn better when to recognize "cruise" and "stalk" by feel or I figure out how to recon the mission map ahead of time to pick the right stalking spots...

Also hoping as the talented folks have more time with Blackshark there will be more helpful videos or guides done specifically on safe attacking tactics (i.e. producer series, or Ironhand's series, or even BeachAV8R's guides).

The great thing is even repeatedly flying NOE to the target area and getting my butt shot down in the Ka-50 is still great fun and not yet frustrating, I'm still having fun with it.
