Nivron Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 I want to start off by saying a massive thank you to Brian Franklin over at Simshed for allowing me to port his Nimrod from FSX. I have been tinkering with this for DCS for the better part of a year, I grew up with this aircraft and it's one of my all time favourites. Now I must state that it is only the base model of the Nimrod MR2 that I was able to use. The model cleanup; (removing the external stairs and cowlings) and animations were completed by myself. Now, this is where I hit a brick wall as I have very little experience with model unwrapping, texturing and implementing everything into DCS inside a clean standalone mod. Below is my first implementation into DCS. Youtube Proof of Concept: Comments about this video: 1) This is an old build of the model where it has some scale issues (It's tiny and about 1/10th the size it should be though this is fixed on a later build). 2) As you can tell, this is only placed on the VSN Typhoon mod as a placeholder and as I say, proof of concept 3) As said previously, I have little experience with texturing which is why there's that missing texture error everywhere and why some parts only have textures on one face Current Plans: Unwrap and Texture Add a flight model such as the E-3's but tweak it ever so slightly Add sound effects Add Weapon Loadouts (AGM-84, AGM-65 and of course, the AIM-9L Sidewinder in a dual mount) I'd love for feedback, support or help in anyway. Feel free to contact me via email: nimrodprojectdcs@gmail.com and when I've created a discord server for the project, I'll amend this post to include that as well 11 1
joey45 Posted September 26, 2022 Posted September 26, 2022 Awesome. Any updates. The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance. flyingscotsman Posted September 27, 2022 Posted September 27, 2022 I agree with Joey45, I had a few trips in Nimrods, even got to 'drive' once, (To stop me being airsick....it worked!) I too loved the FSX Nimrod, best wishes for this MOD.
Kestrel114 Posted September 23, 2023 Posted September 23, 2023 OMG! Please say this is still in development
Nivron Posted November 11, 2023 Author Posted November 11, 2023 So an update to the progress of the Nimrod, It has progressed decently although I have hit a brick wall in my abilities. The aircraft is in and full scale this time, animations are complete, extra details such as engine exhaust and such has been added and weapons have been added. Weapons: 2x AIM-9M AGM-84 Harpoon BL755 BOZ Pod Torpedo MK-82 (Stand in for Iron Bombs) Here is the limit of my knowledge, I do not currently know how to UV unwrap and texture so currently that area of the Nimrod still needs work however for an AI, it is near complete. Here are a few images of the latest progress 11
joey45 Posted November 12, 2023 Posted November 12, 2023 What software are you using to model? The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance. Nivron Posted July 25, 2024 Author Posted July 25, 2024 It is still being worked on in my spare time. I had to redo everything since I recently upgraded my computer and forgot to move the project folder across, thankfully I still had the mod folder at least as a quasi backup. Can't give a timeframe unfortunately but it is at least being worked on in dribs and drabs. Hopefully no news is good news? It’s a spare time thing for the guy though, if it surfaces, it will be when it’s ready. 1 - - - The only real mystery in life is just why kamikaze pilots wore helmets? - - -

Nivron Posted January 22 Author Posted January 22 So an update for everyone, rest assured the project isn't dead and I'm being peer pressured by my DCS squadron to hurry up with it . I am currently having my usual headache of doing animations (for the 6th time since starting this project) however I am working on it. I do hope to have the aircraft released for AI this year for you all. I will share more news when I have it 12 3

Nivron Posted March 29 Author Posted March 29 So a quick progress report, after wanting to collide my head with a wall at a rapid rate of speed, the gear animations are now done. Next is flight controls which should thankfully be a lot easier and then onto cfg work 8 1
Tonker Posted March 29 Posted March 29 Bravo! Thanks for the update 1 Nah, I've only just met 'er...:pilotfly:

flyingscotsman Posted April 5 Posted April 5 Magic, I had some trips in these out of St Mawgan & RAF Akrotiri...shows my age, even had a right hand seat for about 20 minutes. All trips were bumpy, horrendous down the back, but much easier up front...keep up the good work and THANK YOU 4
Geschirre Posted Friday at 09:32 PM Posted Friday at 09:32 PM My uncle was contracted from Raytheon by BAE (whatever it was called in the 80s) to create a new UHF array for the Nimrod in the nacelle on top of the tail. The British project manager stipulated that the housing should withstand 26 Gs (yes twenty-six Gs). Why? The rudder pins were rated for 26 G, therefore the UHF array needed to be able withstand 26 Gs. Why, and how the rudder pins rated to 26 G? He couldn't figure that out, but he and his team tried to explain they didn't think the Nimrod would hold up even after 5 Gs, but the project manager was adamant, 26G or he would find someone else. So they went to White Sands to use a centrifuge in the desert (rated for 42 G) and develop a housing that would withstand 26 G (he said a lot of housings disintegrated), but after $800,000+ they managed to create a housing that help up to 26 G. 1 "A plan is a list of things that wont happen"
