Yes, you have "every right" to voice complaints but to be fair the questions asked of you in order to decipher the problem are quite basic, and one potential solution (file corruption) has been offered. The solution to a bad file is to replace it - download again.

Then I would recommend placing the two in something like C:\BlackShark\ or D:\BlackShark\, then attempt install again with the fresh files.

File corruption is nothing weird actually - when files get big, as they have lately, it's a hell of a lot of ones and zeros that ALL have to be exactly right. In the case of DCS more than eight billion of them, actually. This is one of the reasons why many enthusiast-aligned sites (especially in the open-source world) offer so called "hashes" of the files - they are a basic number that you can use to verify that the file was correctly downloaded.

Edit: Actually, wait, you said Error 2 - that's the can't find the file one. And Error 3 is the one with long path, which could occur if you have the files on the desktop. (On vista that should place them in C:\users\yourself\desktop, I don't know if that's enough to cause Error 3 though - might be if there's spaces and stuff in there.) It was the last one in the ones listed in one of the stickies in this section that was the file corruption one.

As a final note, you could verify the size of the files if you want, right-click and properties. My data1.cab is 897 MB (940*989*803 bytes). (Note, that's "size", not "size on disk", they're different.) My setup.exe is 1,30 GB (1*404*206*710 bytes).

Which actually ends up at 18 761 572 104 bits that had to come over the wire exactly right when heading to your computer, not eight billion as I said above. I do hope you realize that things can happen when numbers are that big.

ED is (Eagle Dynamics) team who is working on BS ( I.E. Black Shark for short) as stated earlier look under the name to the left; under the name is the tech support who has been posting to you on your problem.

To be honest, you could just leave it on and let the computer run itself - an idle computer usually doesn't eat more than about 120-150 watts anyhow, which is of course equivalent to just two regular lightbulbs. (Computers under heavy workload is a different matter of course, and varies extremely depending on setup.)

Also, do I understand it right in that the setup.exe file is getting saved as "setup(1).exe"? This indicates that you have the old setup.exe in there as well, correct? This SHOULD not be a problem, however if the same does happen with data1.cab then that WILL cause an Error 2. (This might get confusing since the data1.cab already has and should have a 1 in it, but not one within parantheses.)

As a side note I did make an install with the files on the desktop on my new rig and it worked excellently (a Vista64 machine), but should you get issues like that you can always attempt moving both files directly to C:\ (When opening "My Computer" it's the "local disk" or sometimes "OS", but should carry the C:\ as well. The exact name of it depends on configuration but the C:\ should be visible in parantesis afterwards.)

If the problem persists, it would be really helpful to find out exactly what hardware and operating system you have there to analyze the problem, because if it still doesn't work then there is something really strange going on in your computer. I'll return with the Vista way of getting that information - if you happen to be running XP it should still be relatively similar (but I do not have any XP computers to check on).

If you happen to use something like Windows 98SE or Windows 2000, then that just might be the problem, but people with closer knowledge of BS's compatibilities would have to chime in on that.

In vista, checking what you have is achieved through:

Start > Control Panel, then System and Maintenance > System

To give you an idea of what it might look like and the information in there that might help, here's what I would say about my computer if I were in your situation:

Windows edition

Windows Vista Home Premium

Service Pack 1

System

Processor: Intel Core2 Duo CPU E8500 @ 3.16GHz

Memory (RAM): 4GB

System Type: 64-bit Operating System

----

In other kinds of problems I would of course also include information on my graphics card, what device drivers I have for all these things and so on and so forth. That way it is easier to compare to other setups and see if there's something odd in my system. Sometimes you notice that one of the drivers sitting on the computer is several years old and might therefore cause hardware that SHOULD be compatible to seize up and give all kinds of strangeness. However, looking all of those up is a bit more complex and I don't want to bog you down with a wall of text. If you want it I can give you a brief run-through of how to see which drivers you are running, though.

Oh, and for clarity: a "driver" is a bit of program that basically tells Windows how to use a specific piece of hardware, for example a network card or graphics card etcetera. Most things will work anyway with Windows through using a system called "Plug and Play", but usually the function you get will be limited and not use the full potential of the hardware which can cause some surprises.

See the aforementioned posts. We need information if we are to decipher the problem. Reiterating that a problem persists doesn't exactly provide any clues as to what causes it. :P

have been absent from the internet for some two weeks now

I asked aol to transfer my account to a different phone line in the same house with the same area code

when I rang to ask if I could re-connect on the day they had nominated after cutting me off for 3 days I was told " yes Mr Woods , we have a connection now with 01243 ---- " INCORRECT AREA CODE MY AREA CODE IS 01253 and so I had to wait another 13 days !!!!!!!!! and just got reconnected yesterday

and so ----- I will resume my attempt to get Blackshark working ---- but --- it`s only maybe 2 or 3 weeks before Tom Clancy`s Hawk is released and so Blackshark may take a back seat

incidentally --- why have ED not responded to my e mails asking for a CD when it is released ( and I said I would pay the difference )

they have not actually responded to any of my e mails which were sent directly to themselves

ptwparkinson, please consider investigating the methods described earlier to pass on some information on your system setup. Which version of Windows you have (2000, 2003 Server, XP, XPx64, Vista, Vista64, *shudder* Windows M.E, etcetera) may seem like a trivial thing but the fact is that this just might be the "simple" explanation. Even though all version of "windows" have the "windows" name, they are not at all always similar as they were developed in different times using different technologies for different purposes.

Information regarding processor type and speed, amount of RAM (Random Access Memory), and graphics card might also be useful, just in case there is a conflict somewhere.

Please consider re-reading the information given in earlier posts in this thread for ways of confirming these things and post them. There really is nothing anyone can do in figuring out why your computer is finding issues with BlackShark if they know nothing about that computer. If anything up there became too technical or doesn't seem to fit, please ask for clarifications detailing the spot where it got confusing and I promise you we'll try to help you.

But until we know something about the computer we can't fix the problem. Right now we are at an impass similar to me calling the workshop saying "my car won't start" and not furnishing answers to the question of what brand it is or what fuel it runs on. (Let alone the condition of the electrical wiring, the ignition, lubrication etcetera.)

BTW, something that just hit me for those other guys with better knowledge of BS error reporting: is it feasible to get such errors if attempting to execute very fragmented setup files?

ptwparkinson, did you downloaded the files from the alternative source which i gave you in a PM?

right now im begining to believe that something is wrong with your internetline or on your PC. having constand CRC failures is strange. But im sure we can sort it out.

Posted (edited)

Yeah, getting consistent CRC failures is very very strange. One or two can happen but when it's popping up consistently something is weird with the connection most likely.

Has anyone else have any experience with Webroot's antivirus suite? That's the only immediate thing I could see in the computer list that seems a bit off - and only "off" to the extent that I have no experience at all with it.

I've answered you on December 18, then January 22, the last email I've sent on January 29 from another mailbox (I guessed that the previous one hasn't reached you).

Regarding the problem itself. I would advice downloading from another place with fast internet and trying to install there. It may be at work, neighbour, relative and so on. Save files to flash or burn disk and only after this, try to install from there. So you will surely know the distributive is intact.

If problem repeats on your home computer then, most likely, one of your memory modules mulfunctions.

First of all I should tell that MD5 checksums are available in the mirrors list which is behind Download button.

But anyway, error 13 means a currupt file. So I surely know what verification will tell.

As someones said: Check the files so they aren't corrupted, this is the first thing you should do with every file you download from the internet that isn't working!

File name: setup.exe

File size: 1.31 GB

MD5: b097066f30001c596f576d3f3c850cc1

File name: data1.cab

File size: 897.4 MB

MD5: dc721fc2d8730c1bdd5621bcaf8d92e3

A quick google search found this poplar free MD5 checker:

OK I went out and bought a new laptop

it`s an Acer with 9300 Nvidia Ge Force card , 3 gig ram , dual core etc etc

it`s ok but not the best --- I needed it for work related stuff and thought I`d try and download and run Blackhawk

well it worked which means my PC is possibly suspect but it downloads and runs everything else !!!

anyway ---- it`s up and running on the laptop

HOW DO I GET IT TO RUN FULL SCREEN -- it`s running in a small box on the screen currently

I would like to burn it onto a CD or DVD so that I can load it onto my PC where it will be visually much better ----- what disc should I laod it onto and excatly how do I do that please ?

if someone can talk me through that process step by step ( REMEMBER I`m a bit thick when it comes to computers )

also --- my thanks to everyone so far for responding to me

I did try looking in the online manual to see how to go full screen but couldn`t find anything obvious !!

regards

You need to put it on a DVD disk, go to "My computer" open your optical drive and drag/drop files into it, then "burn"
