dmwierz Posted September 14, 2022 Posted September 14, 2022 I fly DCS exclusively in VR. The Gemini throttle looks ideal for VR, without all the bells and whistles, and at a much better price than the higher end WinWing products, plus, there is a clear upgrade path to turning it into a collective, should I desire. What are the downsides of this throttle. Money IS an object. speed-of-heat Posted September 14, 2022 Posted September 14, 2022 (edited) I havent got it myself, so my assumption would it might have a shorter "throw" meaning you have less precise control of the throttle, and obviously no additional buttons, i also fly exclusively in VR and i still make use of all the buttons on my Throttle (albeit not a winwing throttle) I don't know how it will work with detents Edited September 14, 2022 by speed-of-heat 1 SYSTEM SPECS: Hardware AMD 9800X3D, 64Gb RAM, 4090 FE, Virpil T50CM3 Throttle, WinWIng Orion 2 & F-16EX + MFG Crosswinds V2, Varjo Aero SOFTWARE: Microsoft Windows 11, VoiceAttack & VAICOM PRO YOUTUBE CHANNEL: @speed-of-heat

I have the orion throttle, I think you will like the advantage of all the buttons and axes extra, as far as I know, the two devices have the same input distance, but if you want to use only for helicopter purposes, the gemini will be best, it depends on where you put the device, I you attach it to a chair mount, perhaps reach all the orion's buttons will be not easy, in my case(because I have no room) my orion throttle is on my desktop, and I fly almost always helicopters and it does very well the function, only you must do to the choppers is invert the throttle to be like a collective (when I pull backwards (to the iddle position is like pulling up the collective, and when I push forward is like pulling down the collective). As I said, for me is better have more buttons, besides the axis are the same in the two devices. bojack Posted September 15, 2022 Posted September 15, 2022 I have both the original Orion and the Gemini - I would say the throw was the same (My guess it is that it is the same throttle mechanism inside). I purchased it with the F18 handle and finger lift kit. My problem with the Orion in VR is that, even though it has lots of useful buttons and switches, they are not where I want them - I am forever engaging the parking break instead of the landing gear as I fumble in blind panic during a brake Using the Gemini gives me the option of building my own panel with the switches exactly where I want them to be - I am still building my panels so I haven't used the Gemini much as, but I think it will suit me. One thing worth noting is that it doesn't come with the suction feet that the Orion has and the unit weight is a lot lighter - if you do use one you will definitely have to find a solution to securely mount it (it does have the same mounting holes at the front and rear) As money is a consideration I would suggest the Orion as it is a one stop solution - the Gemini is a component in a bigger project, not a solution on its own

Also I printed a palm rest for the f18 grip that fits very well.. They are all the black ones, If you want the file to print your cap buttons here it is. Dragon1-1 Posted September 17, 2022 Posted September 17, 2022 Orion 2, hands down. Extra stuff on the base is priceless in VR. It's easy to feel out once you're used to the layout, and far easier to hit than keyboard buttons. It's very handy for stuff you want to have within easy reach, but not on the actual HOTAS.

As for the OP: Get the Orion2! Or get the Gemini and the Take-off panel. Me personally, I have the Orion2 and the Take-Off panel and I am running out of ideas what buttons to map... vCVW-17 is looking for Hornet and Tomcat pilots and RIOs. Join the vCVW-17 Discord.
MadKreator Posted September 18, 2022 Posted September 18, 2022 I don’t play in VR a lot but I have the WW Orion f-18 throttle and have no issues using it in vr. muscle memory is there with it so finding the right switches isn’t much issue. I think whatever you choose it will take some getting used to, but you may find the added benefit of having all the extra buttons on the Orion useful. However if you fly helis a lot, the gemini may be the way to go. Or get the handle upgrade later on. The f-18 Orion throttle is on sale now for $235 USD.
