To those who say the Cougar is too hard to move stock, you may want to hop over to the 104th teamspeak some time and talk to my wife "104th_WildCat". This little girl has no problem using the stock spring force in the Cougar for hours at a time. She is flying practices that require her to be very precise and she is doing very well. Just because another HOTAS maybe easier to move does not make it more accurate. You bunch of little girlie men. :DArnold would be ashamed of you all.;)

Also for the cost of some hobby shop brass or even some mylar. You can all but eliminate any potential excessive wear in a stock Cougar for some loose change. It does NOT take hundreds of dollars unless you are keen to eliminate the center detent through a gimbal replacement mod or end up with something that is absolutely without compare in currently available HOTAS solutions.

Polecat,

I have an old Cougar, #4671, and one new I bought new Two years ago (still in the box).

Please tell me or link me to where I can learn how to modify the new one with brass or Mylar. Thanks!

ps it's not nice to call people girlie-men. I don't (even with my right wrist the size of my left thigh!).

CH is the only way to go if you want your HOTAS to work right out the box. Cougars will need to be modded or your arm will pay the price.

actually Cougars do work right out of the box, to be more precise. It's just the bean-counter build quality that eventually may cause slop in the axis. Don't get me started about cleaning the axis pots!

Yes they work out the box but they are hard to fly with in a dogfight. If your flying normally and nothing that requires moving quickly then it's ok. I did like the cougar and may get another one on my B-day.

Kali,

I'm sure you're aware of Cougar world. The site is down now, but you can find all things "Cougar" there. I wonder if there is a mod for lighter springs? I'm sure there must be. If not, keep at it with the Cougar. One day you too can have a wrist as big around as your thigh! :D here's the link: http://cougar.frugalsworld.com/

ps be sure to read about greasing the gimbals. ;)

Yes I have been to cougar world and looked around, but didn't find anything, besides expensive mods :D

These don't have to be expensive. I made my own spring mod before i went for a U2. But you need tools to make them and most people don't have access to these, let alone have them.

Win11 Pro 64-bit, Ryzen 5800X3D, Corsair H115i, Gigabyte X570S UD, EVGA 3080Ti XC3 Ultra 12GB, 64 GB DDR4 G.Skill 3600. Monitors: LG 27GL850-B27 2560x1440 + Samsung SyncMaster 2443 1920x1200, HOTAS: Warthog with Virpil WarBRD base, MFG Crosswind pedals, TrackIR4, Rift-S, Elgato Streamdeck XL.

Personal Wish List: A6 Intruder, Vietnam theater, decent ATC module, better VR performance!

Sure mate not difficult at all. Get some sheets of hobby shop brass. These are small maybe 3"x5" very thin sheets in various thicknesses. The method you can use is similar to the original Mylar fix posted at Cougar World and simply involves sheathing the long sides of the oval with this unlike material and then re-greasing which prevents galling and eliminates excessive wear easily. It can also have the added effect of tightening the center point on a slightly worn or deficiently greased Cougar as well.

Figure about 6 dollars and 2-3 hours time to do what virtually every Anti-Cougar/CH owner claims will cost you hundreds of dollars in gimbal replacement mods.:music_whistling:

And for that 6 dollars don't forget you also get all the strong points and advantages of owning a Cougar. Ergonomic design, all metal, all metal, all metal, highly programmable, arcing throttle, analog rotaries (stock) and it costs less then a CH.

If you want something that totally blows away the competition and have the money to do it then you may choose to MOD it with an NXT or FSSB. No finer HOTAS to be found and no other retail HOTAS system available today can compete with that.

Hell that is even if you want to bother to do it. Many of the people in the 104th own Cougars and have needed to do nothing more then leave them stock and clean and regrease them regularly.

Fine HOTAS stock. Easily competes with the competition and surpasses in may ways and on many levels right out of the box.

Funny that people would say it's hard to 'move anything fast' ... I have a Cougar and I've not felt a need to get something um, 'lighter' to say, get max roll/pitch rate etc. In fact I find the resistance helps me regulate the amount of G I am pulling.

Are there lot of weak-armed virtual jet-jockies or is it 'cause I shoot the bow that I can do all this? ;)

I've been in a F-16 and the way the cougar handles is nothing like the real jet. You DO need to mod it.

PoleCat, I'm not trying to sell CH, I'm just going off of what I have seen and tested.

The F-16 has a side-stick, on the other hand, I'm not flying a virtual f-16 either.

I haven't tried flying the center stick so maybe it's different and easier. But the side stick cougar sucks without any mods.

Kali pull the rubber around the stick base off and replace it with a sock. the mod is on cougar world ,reduces the force need on the stick

I don't have my cougar anymore, but I may buy one in the future.

Correction and emphasis mine.

My stock cougar seems to work just fine somehow - did I get a defective one?

Maybe mine was messed up, maybe a brand new one would be better.

Maybe - well, I think Deadman nailed it - to each their own.
