Bossco82 Posted October 23, 2022 Posted October 23, 2022 Hi guys, I have a little Discord group and one guy is having trouble setting up x3 TM MFD's on his system. I think its an Asus Z690 Prime motherboard DDR5 version so the rear USB ports are a little limited. I recommended a powered USB hub. The problem he is having is both Windows 11 and DCS are only able to see x2 of the MFD's though a Corsair Headset Stand USB hub, (non powered). In Windows it see's MFD 1, MFD 1, MFD 2. In DCS it looks like two of the MFD's will put in the same input on the controls options page. The inputs from x2 of the MFD's ghost one another. Does anyone have any idea's to help solve this and get all x3 MFD's seen as separate controllers? Appreciate any help with this.
Mars Exulte Posted October 23, 2022 Posted October 23, 2022 (edited) The biggest problem with DCS and TM MFDs is DCS tries to forcibly autoassign them, unlike literally EVERY OTHER DEVICE and CANNOT BE OVERRIDEN. Generally, this is not such a problem, as the MFDs are normally configured correctly, but on occasion it is a nuisance. If it was me, I would fully expect to encounter this, and my first attempt at a solution would be finding a way to load them as generic USB game controllers instead of letting Windows identify them correctly as TM MFDs as doing so starts DCS off into ''helping''. If they were never id'd as TM MFDs then DCS wouldn't know to start screwing with them. A bit of unnecessary black magic work is required because they treat them differently, when they really, REALLY shouldn't. I would start off by trying to manually assign them device IDs and overriding Windows 'self identification'. Used to be this was fairly easy, but with each generation Windows has become more ''user friendly/idiot proof'' and removed less and less control. Tbh, I don't know how to go about it these days. I will experiment when I get home tomorrow and see if I can find a way. Part of the problem is also that TM MFDs are really designed to be used in pairs. I know it can be worked around, as I've seen others use them in triple configs, though. MAXsenna Posted October 23, 2022 Posted October 23, 2022 I've read somewhere that for 3 you need to install T.A.R.G.E.T and assign one of them as number three.Hope this helps.Cheers! Sent from my MAR-LX1A using Tapatalk 1
xoxen Posted October 24, 2022 Posted October 24, 2022 I have 3 of them running without issues. Two are named the same, so I have MFD 1, MFD 2 and MFD 2. I simply mapped the buttons inside of DCS and it can seperate them properly. One thing I figured out is if I unplug the USB connection (PC off) and mix up both MFD 2s, they are switched in DCS as well (center is reversed with the left one). I can revert this by unplugging and insert them correctly when the PC is off or in standby mode. It does not work when Windows is running. So I can confirm the two MFD 2s are similar but I can use them seperately in DCS without the usage of T.A.R.G.E.T.! 1 1 AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D, MSI MPG X570 Gaming Plus, 64GB Crucial Ballistix DDR4-3600 CL16, Asus TUF Gaming RTX 4080 OC, Windows 11 64bit Home Premium, TrackIR 5 with TrackClip: Pro!, Virpil MongoosT-50CM3 Base + TM Warthog Stick + 7cm extension + WINWING Orion 2 with F-15EX grips, Cougar MFDs with 8" displays, Saitek Rudder Pedals, Samsung Odyssey G9 49" 5120x1440 @120 Hz

Obviously you don't need to run T.A.R.G.E.T to have it working, but what I meant was for the initial setup of MFD3, so it will not be seen as MFD2 when you unplug/plug etc. You will also need T.A.R.G.E.T to change the lighting etc. to easier identify the different screens. And for the record, you can rename devices in DCS, so need for a double entry of MFD2s.Cheers! Sent from my MAR-LX1A using Tapatalk 1
xoxen Posted October 24, 2022 Posted October 24, 2022 Great to know, that it is possible to rename devices, I was not aware of that. I will check this out. Sacarino111 Posted October 24, 2022 Posted October 24, 2022 Hi. I only have 2 MFD's, but I remember there is a way in the device config to select the number of the MFD, so the LEDs show the mfd in question: left MFD is MFD 1 Right MFD is for MFD 2, and so on... Not sure, but it may help. Saludos. Saca111 1 1

Bossco82 Posted October 24, 2022 Author Posted October 24, 2022 Thank you for all the replies. This forum section rarely lets you down does it. It was a little awkward as he is in Florida, and I am in the UK. He has them working now, not sure what exactly was the key. However, the TARGET software, some powered USB hubs and mapping the third MFD manually in the FA-18 controls has done the trick. So, if you get shot down by Phillip on growlers or similar, it's your own fault you helped get his controls working, LOL! Thanks for the replies. 1
