Yep, I use the thumbstick on the collective for this purpose and it works ok, but it is supposed to be on the cyclic..... /Oakes

All you have to do is load up a mission, cycle through the toggle positions for the switches in question and make a note of what they do, and there you have it. I wish I had it that easy! Trying to build a pit for a sim that's nearly a year away from release takes alot of research into things that aren't readily available for researching. :( Oh, it just occurred to me you might be confused about the switch annotations themselves, in which case I'd suggest you check out this thread: http://www.viperpits.org/smf/index.php?topic=3081.0 That will give you a basic overview, but there's more to know than that, for instance the difference between a single pole double throw and a double pole single throw. Even the most basic concepts in this hobby can be quite daunting to a beginner, and I speak from experience. The only advice I can give you is this: Google.. :D And if that's not what you were asking at all and you were just being lazy, not wanting to actually load the game and check for yourself, please excuse me. I in no way meant to sound patronizing. In either case though, my advice still stands: Google. I must be careful not to impose on this excellent thread, but my head is spinning with a saturation of information, all of which has not knitted together yet. After quite some deliberation I’ve decided to use a combination of the Leo Bodnar and Opencocpit interfaces. Starting with the master card. A good start for me would be the Targeting panel and I want to get some hardware ordered up ASAP however I don’t want to be ordering up stuff that’s not going to work as planned. For example the simulator appears to use a standard latching ON/OFF push button with a LED on this panel. However I’m being told that all buttons should be of the non-latching variety. The bottom line is if I knew what parts Oakes used for this assembly and could use the same, I will be starting off soundly. Thanks for the link which is a good refresher, however I always thought the ‘P’ in SPST, DPDT etc was for POLE not PULL.:cry:. You are also right about GOOGLE, it's what got me here :). Oakes Posted April 9, 2009 Author Posted April 9, 2009 Hi Rockeyes For the targeting panel I used the following (search on ebay for): For the right hand rotary: PKG 20, ALPHA 5 POSITION NON SHORTING ROTARY SWITCHES The bigger toogle switches (Laser, Train etc) PKG5,SPST ON OFF CAR BOAT Latching Toggle SWITCH,701A Burst length PCK 8,B-103 MINI SPDT Toggle Switches-ON/OFF/ON CAR DIY Other small switches (rate of fire etc) PKG12,R202 MINI DPDT DIY Toggle Switch ON/ON,UL SWITCH Pushbuttons (Auto turn, Reset etc) 8,Push Button Led DPDT OFF/(ON) Momentary Switch,GLKD3 For these I replaced the red led with green ones bought at ELFA(dimensions are 2x5 mm) + I made custom labels out of laminated laser printouts glued to 18x18x6mm pieces of acrylic which in turn were glued to the GLKD3 caps. The pushbuttons for the targeting panels should be momentary only, pushbuttons should be connected to inputs and LED to outputs of the OC cards, this will enable the OC software to turn on/off the LED independently of the pushbuttons (the real panel has the same functionality). /Oakes 1

oakdown Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 great work oakes (and trigger if you reading in this thread) just curious about the opencockpits IO cards as opposed to just hacking an old keyboard apart ala (you have to make it past it's long annoying intro): you can use multiple usb keyboards on the same computer, so I guess the switches allowed would be almost infinite, plus would allow for you to still have your (unhacked) keyboard connected for ingame chat. what would be the main drawback to a hacked keyboard system? because it's "input only?", or that you have to add more componentry (relays etc/capacitor) to create a mometary switch out of a toggle? i'm just in the dark a bit, as to why you want to go through all the programming when you could switch directly to a key function as it exists in a disassembled keyboard. ref: http://home.planet.nl/~schre010/fs/toggle.html any advice and tips appreciated (;
Oakes Posted April 16, 2009 Author Posted April 16, 2009 Well the main benefit of the OC cards is that once ED releases the PCIP thingy we will be able to interface directly to DCS, i.e no out of sync problems and so on, LED's and segment displays will work correctly (like the PVI). If I was only interested in inputs, I might have gone the USB keyboard route or bought a Xkeys Matrix board (where you don't need any relays etc for toggle switches to work), but since I want feedback I went with the OC cards. /Oakes

I would be interested in your views. Well the CNC is great but it has a learning curve on how to cut etc to get good finish and so on. I've been mostly experimenting up until now but I think I'll be able to make some progress soon. Right now I'm writing a little program to generate GCode for engraving the panel and button texts. Couldn't find one that was reasonably priced with the functionality that I needed. /Oakes
