HitchHikingFlatlander Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 Awesome stuff I've always wanted to ask how you guys label your panels and get the pro results, I use a label maker and my panels look like a deranged letter to someone made of cut out words from a magazine! http://dcs-mercenaries.com/ USA Squad
Swetrekki Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 okes have a CNC mill... obviously a bit more expensive than a label maker but re result is amazing...
HitchHikingFlatlander Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 Yeah I can figure out how he does it but what about everyone else who dont have the mill? http://dcs-mercenaries.com/ USA Squad

Oakes Posted August 12, 2009 Author Posted August 12, 2009 A little off-topic post. Flew to Siljannäs last weekend with the Eurostar. Takeoff from ESTT(Söderslätt) at Friday 0805 (local), fuelstop at ESGR(Skövde) and then on to ESVS(Siljannäs). Same route on the way back. Total flight time was about 4 hours each way, altitude was between 2000 feet to about 7000 feet (FL070), cruising speed about 90 Knots. On the way north at FL060: Bell 47: STOL: Experimental with Push/Pull propellers: Swedish Armed Forces chopper over the parking lot: Daisy DC3: PBY Catalina: P-51D Mustang taxing (what a sound that V12 1600 hp Packard Merlin makes, makes the hair on your arms stand up) : Bunch of Yak 50:s doing aerobatics: JAS 39 Griffin (go Sweden:thumbup:): On Saturday evening we went back to ESVS(Siljannäs) and did a local flight of about 15 min, upon turning from the right downwind onto the right base for runway 14 I spot the Daisy DC3 on the left downwind for runway 14 (which means about 2 o'clock , going by from the right to the left), big plane btw. Then the radio goes "DC3 to Siljannäs, any traffic in the pattern?" I reply "Sierra-Kilo-Kilo to DC3, we are on the right hand base about to turn onto the final for runway 14, we have contact with you" DC3 goes: "Copy we are number two after you for runway 14" Me: "Ok Sierra-Kilo-Kilo" Ok, I think, no problem, plenty of time... We enter the final and a few moments before touching down the DC3 comes back on the radio: "Have you landed yet?" We land and I go: "Yes, we're down, trying to expedite leaving the runway Sierra Kilo Kilo" DC3: "No hurry our intention is to do a low pass along the runway" Ok... I think, better get the camera ready. You can just make out the DC3 to the left of the rudder: Me: "Sierra Kilo Kilo to DC3" DC3: "DC3, go ahead" Me: "That was interesting to say the least" DC3: "Did we scare you?" Me: "Nope, we're fine" DC3: "Good" Me: "Sierra Kilo Kilo is leaving the runway, taxing to the toilets, we have some skidmarks to remove" :) Going home on Sunday(some rain over the right wing): /Oakes
Triggerhappy69 Posted August 19, 2009 Posted August 19, 2009 You fly the Eurostar..? WoW..! I've always admired that plane (from a distance I might add). I looks like a smaller version of my all time favourite home-build.. the Lancair "But (504)Brewber said they were'nt friendly.. So I took'em out.!" [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

ruprecht Posted August 24, 2009 Posted August 24, 2009 I'm speechless with awe and admiration. I'm also looking at every panel I've ever made, and wondering if I should toss them out as they are testament to the hamfisted mess I make :) DCS Wishlist: | Navy F-14 | Navy F/A-18 | AH-6 | Navy A-6 | Official Navy A-4 | Carrier Ops | Dynamic Campaign | Marine AH-1 | Streaming DCS sometimes:

And here is the first part: /Oakes Hey Oakes - amazing work, but not to throw a bug in your soup... and while it *looks* sound, the spring mechanism looks wonky to me. You have to pull the handle to make it switch positions right? Which means the spring would have to 'compress' inside the throat during that operation.
Feuerfalke Posted August 24, 2009 Posted August 24, 2009 That depends on the springs you use. If you use a compressible spring, it needs to be extended before pulling. If you use a stretching spring, it probably is packed together before you pull the lever. :smilewink: MSI X670E Gaming Plus | AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D | 64 GB DDR4 | AMD RX 6900 XT | LG 55" @ 4K | Cougar 1000 W | CreativeX G6 | TIR5 | CH HOTAS (with BU0836X-12 Bit) + Crosswind Pedals | Win11 64 HP | StreamDeck XL | 3x TM MFD
Oakes Posted August 24, 2009 Author Posted August 24, 2009 Just making sure you guys are awake :) Yes, in the picture the spring should be uncompressed rather than compressed i.e. when you pull on the handle the spring will compress. /Oakes

PanelBuilder Posted August 25, 2009 Posted August 25, 2009 A little update, here is my design for the gearselector. /Oakes Again, this is fantastic. Looks like a couple of limit switches in there. Do you want the sim handle to execute its whole travel at the beginning of your throw, or at the end, or in the middle. I guess at the beginning might be best otherwise it would look like the system's not keeping up. But then if you stop your throw half way... It would be great if they gave us gear up and gear down commands. How about handle-out and handle-in commands? You think that's too much? How about rotate up and rotate down (like the tv contrast)? Cheers, Colin
Oakes Posted August 25, 2009 Author Posted August 25, 2009 Thank you all for the kind words. Hmm..the "limit" switches are the only connection to the sim. My plan is to send the gear up command when the lower switch is pressed (handle is up) and the gear down command when the upper switch is pressed (handle is down). I.e. to go from gear up to gear down the following will happen: 1. Pull the handle 2. Lower the handle (still pulling) 3. Release the handle (which will press the switch) 4. Send Gear Down to the sim. If there are no separate gear up/gear down commands I will use some SIOC logic to insure that the handle will not be out of sync with the sim. i.e. only send the "G" key when the opposite switch from the last one pressed is pressed. I don't know how the real control operates i.e. at which point in the pull - move - release cycle the landing gear up/down sequence is initiated. Maybe someone can enlighten me. /Oakes

Gear switches are in the CPT_MECH device. Range is 0.0 to 1.0, so of cource I hooked a pot up to it to see what would happen. Turns out the little handle just vibrates in and out as you turn the dial. If you stop somewhere and let it catch up, the lever can move up or down. I'm gussing the sim is just looking at the LS bit(s). Cheers, Colin

RaH Posted September 1, 2009 Posted September 1, 2009 (edited) Yeah I can figure out how he does it but what about everyone else who dont have the mill? You could always try either an engraving service or a trophy making shop, I can't see em charging much to mill out some text on a panel or two for you. Pro looking results, under $20. Oakes one hell of a build, it's gorgeous. I'm also more than curious how you are interfacing the panels into BS, if I followed the thread correctly you are using OC cards for the switches, but what matrix is the controller using to interface with the pc itself. Or do the OC cards have the interface for that. I just sent off for 2 chips for the ATMega16-16 the idea being a panel based off the MJoy16 circuit design, I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on that one. Edited September 1, 2009 by RaH

jerom1992 Posted September 3, 2009 Posted September 3, 2009 All this stuff is amazing, but sometimes I wonder who will win a battle: A guy with good skill with his own built home cockpit, or a guy with excellent skill with a simple joystick. Please don't feel insulted because pitbuilders do an excellent job and I really admire their work and patience, but I just wondered
