hitman Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 Ive been down since Dec. 3rd waiting on people to fix my power supply or whatever. Just recently replaced it since Coolmax RMA department cant tell the difference between a dead psu or a working psu, so instead of getting on the ball, I went balls to walls. Soo...I ordered 2 DangerDen water cooling blocks for both of my GTX260 Core 216s, a new Apogee water block for the CPU, a Thermaltake M3 reservoir (since my old reservoir doesnt fit anymore), a Thermaltake 1200w power supply, and a few fittings and adapters. Seems like my whole system was designed for a 3/8" ID lines, here and there I had 1/2" ID fittings or 1/4" fittings. Ill post pics of this setup when I get it up and running (hopefully in the next week). Heres the tally on how much I "had" to spend on my updated rig: Gigabyte EX58 Extreme O/C board (watercooled NB) -$325 Intel i7 -$250ish Corsair XMS3 1600mhz (6gbs) -$299 2xGTX260 Core 216s -$255 ea. Thermaltake 1200w PSU -$399 +tax Danger Den GPU waterblock for GTX260's x2 -$150 ea. Apogee Waterblock CPU -$65 Bits and pieces of water cooling system -$70 roughly Comes out to about...2250 bones in the last month and I still dont have a functioning computer. :helpsmilie:Thank you Coolmax customer support. This is my first full blown liquid cooling build. My last one had just a liquid cooled CPU. Ill start posting some pics on the build soon. Hopefully it comes out smoothly instead of piddledicking around with a broken power supply. Thank god I know the mobo, cpu and ram work.
Pilotasso Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 Good luck man. Yeah never order anything in christmas season again. Adding to the logistics nightmare custumer support also cloggs up in november/december. Post your comparisons and benchies! :) .
hannibal Posted January 22, 2009 Posted January 22, 2009 u might as well throw another 1000 bones in there for matrox triplehead 2 go, Natural point trackIR, buttkicker, etc..lol find me on steam! username: Hannibal_A101A http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197969447179
hitman Posted January 22, 2009 Author Posted January 22, 2009 Dont need TripleHead (got Sli), already have TIR4, got a 500w sound system as well, so dont need a butt kicker either.

Can't do three screens with SLI. Only two. You need to disable SLI to do more tha two screens. In addition, I don't believe you can span the sim across them either, not sure about that though.

hitman Posted January 23, 2009 Author Posted January 23, 2009 (edited) Ill get some taken tomorrow, Kuky. Im still waiting on the fittings to come so I can get the plumbing done right. Seems like I cant stick to one fitting size, so I have to improvise. :| Im also trying to figure out how Im going to get these 2 cards water cooled, since they sit close to each other, and the plumbing looks like it will be an absolute nightmare. Kuky Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 oh yeah, I think you'll have hard time getting it done... good luck if you go ahead with it (I gave up on idea of water cooling my video cards) PC specs: Windows 11 Home | Asus TUF Gaming B850-Plus WiFi | AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D + LC 360 AIO | MSI RTX 5090 LC 360 AIO | 55" Samsung Odyssey Gen 2 | 64GB PC5-48000 DDR5 | 1TB M2 SSD for OS | 2TB M2 SSD for DCS | NZXT C1000 Gold ATX 3.1 1000W | TM Cougar Throttle, Floor Mounted MongoosT-50 Grip on TM Cougar board, MFG Crosswind, Track IR

Icarus2 Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 (edited) Not anymore. With recent drivers you can have SLI with multi monitors. Have you actually done it with more than 2 monitors with SLI enabled, if so how? I'm using 180.22 and they don't do more than two monitors. Perhaps you can show me how.:) So, far as I see you have to disable SLI to get 3-4 monitors in order to replace TH2G. Edited January 23, 2009 by Icarus2
Pilotasso Posted January 23, 2009 Posted January 23, 2009 ah..well the issue of 2 or more monitors is another thing altogether. I have only 2 (even though I use 1 most of the time) .
hitman Posted January 23, 2009 Author Posted January 23, 2009 oh yeah, I think you'll have hard time getting it done... good luck if you go ahead with it (I gave up on idea of water cooling my video cards) I got all the plumbing sorted out, hopefully. I got 1 video card set up for water cooling. Someone at the evga factory overtorqued these screws and Im stripping mine. I wonder if Arctic Silver compound is conductive. Kuky Posted January 24, 2009 Posted January 24, 2009 I'm pretty sure Arctic Silver is conductive as it contains microscopic metal particles (probably silver, as the name would suggest) so when you apply it don't put too much (should be very thin layer you'd put on the GPU) so it doesn't spread over the soldered pinouts of the GPU PC specs: Windows 11 Home | Asus TUF Gaming B850-Plus WiFi | AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D + LC 360 AIO | MSI RTX 5090 LC 360 AIO | 55" Samsung Odyssey Gen 2 | 64GB PC5-48000 DDR5 | 1TB M2 SSD for OS | 2TB M2 SSD for DCS | NZXT C1000 Gold ATX 3.1 1000W | TM Cougar Throttle, Floor Mounted MongoosT-50 Grip on TM Cougar board, MFG Crosswind, Track IR
opformaster Posted January 24, 2009 Posted January 24, 2009 From the arctic silver website Arctic Silver 5 was formulated to conduct heat, not electricity. (While much safer than electrically conductive silver and copper greases, Arctic Silver 5 should be kept away from electrical traces, pins, and leads. While it is not electrically conductive, the compound is very slightly capacitive and could potentially cause problems if it bridges two close-proximity electrical paths.) I personally use arctic silver Ceramique to avoid any possibility. Kuky Posted January 24, 2009 Posted January 24, 2009 ^^^ Well there you go... good to know compund is not actually conductive (I stand corrected) but it can still cause shorts because it is slightly capacitive and potentially can cause a problem if it's over exposed wiring/soldering. hitman Posted January 24, 2009 Author Posted January 24, 2009 Ill have to disassemble my gpu again then and wipe it down with alcohol. I hope to god I didnt damage anything taking these cards apart...freakin' eVGA, they overtorqued these screws! I had to take a hacksaw and cut a slot out of one of the cover screws so I can get a screwdriver to grip. Cheap aluminum screws.
opformaster Posted January 24, 2009 Posted January 24, 2009 Hey Hitman, It looks like the HDDs would clear the GFX cards why do you have all 3 packed right on top of each other? I like to have a lil space to let air flow between them. A stack of HDDs can get really hot and more surface area allows better cooling. Looking good anyway, hope the rest of your build goes a bit smoother. -op4 Rig Specs: AMD FX-60 @ 2.6ghz - DFI Lanparty SLI UT - 4gb Mushkin Redline Ram - WD Raptor 300gb HDD - EVGA 260GTX 940mb - SoundBlaster something Live:P - Samsung 20.1" Syncmaster 204B (Camera) and Shuttle 17" xp17 (Abris & Shkval) Flight Controls: Franken Force CH 568/Logitech Wingman Force 3D Hybrid - CH Pro Throttle - Logitech Momo Wheel Conversion to FFB pedals - Belkin N52
hitman Posted January 24, 2009 Author Posted January 24, 2009 Only place to put the hard drives at, and the length of the sata cables are only 12 inches long. I got good airflow anyways, I have a 25cm case fan blowing cool air onto the main board.
hitman Posted January 25, 2009 Author Posted January 25, 2009 Well, I got the old girl to fire up today, to see if she would actually post, and she did! Feels like starting my '65 mustang for the first time after rebuilding the engine. Now Im just down to doing the plumbing and wiring...hopefully my water block fittings will come in tomorrow...I didnt realize Im going to have to make some very tight bends with the tubes between the video cards, as the barbs are perpendicular to the card. Gonna have to get creative there.
hitman Posted January 27, 2009 Author Posted January 27, 2009 After all this time has passed and getting everything tested, I GOT A BAD FREAKIN' VIDEO CARD!! Thank god I have 2, and thank god as well that modding the video card didnt void the warranty. Looks like I get to wait a little while longer for a full system. Till then at least I get to play some flight sims. :D
Pilotasso Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 You might as well test her with LOMAC and DCS because you wont notice much of a difference between 1 and 2 cards. Infact LOMAC to me just refuses to work, at least more than once before the profile resets to single GPU automaticaly. And that with flickering clouds. .
hitman Posted January 27, 2009 Author Posted January 27, 2009 Im currently running the computer now. Seems kind of sluggish in windows at the moment, but Im tweaking everything now. Got the cpu and my video card both running at 32c under load. :D
Pilotasso Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 Sluguish?! Man..the last time I had slugish OS on a new machine was when I had hardware problems...huh hoh... :D .
hitman Posted January 28, 2009 Author Posted January 28, 2009 I need to update the BIOS, but I cant unfortunately...my keyboard doesnt work when I try to do it (usb). I had a few hairy moments when I first booted up...had a leak on the cpu block that I didnt find, but I was looking for leaks when I first started, so I was prepared for it. Heres the finished product (till I get my card RMA'd). You can see here where Im going to have problems routing the plumbing...Im gonna have to find a new reservoir...the thermaltake M3 I got wasnt adequate enough, and wouldnt allow flow at all. I didnt bother with cable management, and wont until I get the new video card back.
