Can you persuade me to buy DCS Black Shark? That is indeed the question. :D There are a number of things that I want to clarify before I laydown my money on this software.

1- What is this lark about activations etc. I don't have to pay more money when they run out do I?

2- How will it run on my pc? Its not very high spec but I game at 1920x1200.

Core 2 Quad Q9450 45nm 12mb @ 3.00Ghz (Is the game multithreaded)

4Gb 2x2Gb 800Mhz 4-4-4-12 1t

8800 GTX OC

2x1Tb HDD

Can I run at high settings?

3- How well does the X-52 Pro run? I have one, but would like to know if I can get better (within sensible cost) to increase realism.

Many thanks. I look forward to placing money with company who make such good stuff.

1 - if you run out, ED will provide more if you have a reasonable explanation ;)

2 - It'll run fine.

3 - A lot of people seems to use that stick and it seems to be just fine.

defcon, run it in Vista and use the affinity tweaks here on this forum ( search for it, I use Jesse's but there are 3 or 4 of them) and gain even better fps on that system. Many of us have installed Vista as a dual boot for this very reason.

I've only had it for 6 flight hours (have'nt crashed yet :D very proud about that) and have'nt seen any real combat yet.

1 - Considering how awesome this sim is, I'd happily buy it again if I ran out of my many activasions (10?, don't remember).

2 - I have no idea, it runs better than lockon did on my system at 1680x1050 (amd X2 4400, GF 8600, 2gb ram)

3 - Can't see why there would be any problems with it since it's one of the most popular joysticks around, surely they made sure it works nicely with it.

You should get it or you're missing out on alot of fun!! :)

Edit: I should also add, that I run it on medium settings at 1680x1050. I'll probably lower the resolution when I go to war, since I guess that'll tax my system more, but then by that time I will have learned the cockpit well enough that I don't need as high a resolution :P

Support the high fidelity sim market and buy it anyway. Or one day we'll all be playing Awesome Chopper Combat Extreme on PS4 with our joypads because there's no alternative.

1) I think in most cases they will probably give you more activations if you had used them up legitimately. I thinks I read that somewheres.

2) I'm running the game on a Pent 3.2 with 2 gigs of ram and a ATI1650 vid card. I run it at 1152x864 at minimal settings except for medium textures and 4x anti aliasing. Some real busy missions make it crawl, but there's others that don't and with the mission editor, there's enough to keep me flying and having fun.

You're joking aren't you??

Every minute you don't click "BUY NOW", you're missing out!!! OK, the AI is a bit dumb, missions aren't randomly generated, but the immersion and realism more than make up for that! Mission developers are starting to get to know the mission system, and already there are some great missions available.

Online flight is definitely the best. Join us over at http://dcs-bs.com/ .

Geez mon, it's not like you're buying the house or the trip to the space...

Well that would depend on the buyer's financial situation. Some people can only afford to buy games on rare occasions. In that case we need to ask questions and make sure it's worth the cash.

I suspect he knows it's a nice machine, just wants to know if it's good enough to be able to run everything on MAX.

If he could afford to buy that computer, & to buy that stick, & asks if he should upgrade, he can afford to spend another 2% of that to buy BS ...

If there is any sim around worth of buying it, no doubt that would be DCS BS. There are numerous reviews about the BS and there is nothing we have to do to persuade anyone in buying it, nor making anyone believe that sim is worth his money. There is only one way to find out about it and it is to get the sim. All what is possible to say about the sim is been said already. Not trying to be rude or something, just being honest and realistic.

Go buy it or else :gun_sniper:

Seriously now... DCS Black Shark is well worth the money. With activations you get 8 activations keys and 9 deactivation times which totals to 72 times you can reinstall it but even then ED have been galant in the past and many times given out new activation keys to people who've run out of theirs.

The sim will play good on your hardware but since there are some settings you can manually adjust you won't be able to run some extreme graphics (the way the sim can be set as) and insane amount of ground/air war in mission, but on default high settings you should get decent framerate and nice gameplay.

so... not convinced yet? Then it's time to :gun_sniper:

Thanks for the replies people, good to know there is a healthy community :D

Im really REALLY tempted to get this, as I love the idea of sims rather than BF2 esque flying.

My final 2 questions :doh:are:

1: Will the engine ever be updated. Im not a graphics whore, but http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/img/products/large/6c3af06465fae7bcadbc18a1e34da4d9.jpg still hurts my eyes slightly (must be 2009 thats doing it :D).

2: How well will it run on my internet connection if I play online.(I can get 100kbps downstream and upload at 14kbps). (a megabyte in 10 secs). My latency isnt TO bad....

Its not really the money that im quibbling about, but where I spend my money. I have resolved to spend my money more ethically. eg I download films now before I buy them, as I refuse to support movies which contravene my beliefs. (kingdom of heaven anyone:D). Whilst its to a lesser extent with games, I just want to make sure my money is justified :) (Its alright, im not going to pirate this ;)).

The quick and friendly responses from the community alone have got my finger twitching :D.

Oh and one FINAL question :P:helpsmilie: can I run 2x 24" monitors without to much performance hit?

cheers

1: Dude, this is a Aircraft sim, you shouldn't ever get close enough to be worried how that infatry looks. There's also nothing better around on the study sim level, IMHO. To answer your question, ED's plans are to upgrade the engine sometime, the whens and whats are still unclear though.

2: Although i have very little experience with multiplayer gameplay in BS, your upload seems quite low. How is performance with other games?

cheers

Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two.

Will your computer be updated to super computer level? :D That infantry has faces, even when you are not going to see them. It is not first person shooter, in DCS you are going to fly and not to run around, so although most models are very detailed, often they will look just to you just like bunch of pixels (it is property of all flight sims).

...?!?!? That does not correspond with the values you supplied, my guess is you have 128kbps upload, not very fast but it should do the job IMHO.

My apologies, I was giving the values which my internet could produce. eg I have a 1mb package with 128kb upload which gives me 100kbps and 14kbps.

But the screenshot you supplied tells me otherwise, it says 800kbps and 90. Do you have more than one connection? I'm getting confused. However 128kbps should be just enough to play BS.

What's with the "Convince me plz, my ego is soo big" attitude in the forums recently? Do some Google for review/previews and videos, read through forums and DCS website and decide for yourself.

The dynamic has changed since BS went public, but it's slowly drifting back to normal.

There are so damn many reviews, blogs, and infos about BS.

Thinking over and over but it's so much idiotic manner that I can't pass over this thread.

I've already "purchased" BS, but the main thing I was always interested in is whether I will still be able to install this game after ED is gone. The pattern of good software companies disappearing seemingly overnight is not at all unusual (Jane's, Looking Glass, etc.). So while I can still play LB2 or System Shock pretty much forever--in fact, I just finally finished SS2 a few months ago--I'm assuming that my purchased copy of BS will be useless when ED is gone. I mean technically, when you're "purchasing" this software, you're really just leasing it, right?
