Currently the cockpit textures are tied to the normal texture setting. The terrain textures are separate.

This means that if you require the textures lowered to improve performance (especially for VR) you have to sacrifice the ability to read labels and instruments in the cockpit as well.

A solution to this issue would be to have the cockpit textures on a different setting much like the terrain textures.

The cockpit is the most important part of what the player sees, especially in VR. Your plane's external texture, or the textures of other aircraft and vehicles does not matter as much as the players cockpit.

This method would greatly improve the experience for VR uses or those on older systems.

Another solution is to provide texture settings per aircraft. Having textures at High makes huge difference in GPU memory usage between huey and apache. The latter goes 105% in my 3080ti while huey stays around 80-90%. The apache with these settings is unplayable.

I recommend adding this setting under the special options or even better calculating your GPU memory and offering the best option per aircraft.

This is a good choice but not only because of GPU memory, which also depend on the mission, players (MP) and map, but because of the cockpit texture quality differences between modules.

While I think many of the settings should work with less powerful hardware once the underlaying problems are solved, I agree that the option to separately change cockpit texture quality from overall texture quality is much needed. Especially with tomeye's idea to implement it as special options we would have much more room to tune the game to our own hardware on a per aircraft basis, while other aircraft around us could be rendered with low textures and thus hopefully save a lot of memory.

I hope ED is aware of this wish.
