I’m trying to choose a GPU for my first computer build and would appreciate some feedback.

In Canada, at this time, the RX6800 costs approximately $450-550. The 3070 costs approximately $600-700. I’ve heard the 6800 can out perform the 3070, but there’s far less community support for settings and such on the 6800.

Is it worth another $100-200 for the tech support? I’m a PC gaming newbie, and not using VR.

thanks in advance!

What ever fits your preference really.  The RX 6800 is a decent card and so is the RTX 3070. You will save money with AMD but RTX has better Ray-Tracing technology and more applications' technologies prefer Nvidia cards. But if you're just gaming I'd go with the RX 6800. My first GPU was an ATi, which is now incorporated into AMD, and it was a fine budget card at the time. If you are building your PC for the first time, do your research. Its not difficult, just a lot of little steps. As long as you do your research and take your time you do not need tech support/warranty extensions.

Best of luck on your build.

Thanks! I’ve been doing my research for several months, I appreciate the encouragement.

I think I may not have been super clear in regards to support; I’m not primarily concerned about tech support. I’m thinking about being able to source answers from the player community if I need assistance with settings.

Thanks again,

Just ask your question here or any nerd friendly forum. Just double-check you're getting facts and not fiction. I've been duped a few times when I first got into computers. Misinformation is out there.

I'm still shopping for a card. Been looking for at least a month now. I've kind of got it narrowed down but one thing I'm still not 100% sure of is whether DCS prefers Nvidia to AMD. It looks like Nvidia wins that one. So on one hand you have sometimes decent prices and more VRAM with AMD, but Nvidia will get the DLSS love and maybe just gets along with DCS better.

I couldn't care less about any other game or sim I might run, DCS is my only concern as far as a new card goes.

The RTX 4060 is rumored to be coming in April and I'm curious to see what it looks like. The answer might be buy a RX6800 but it's hard to say before they release the specs. As of right now I would say that AMD cards are a far better value but DCS prefers Nvidia. I bought a RX 5600XT a few years ago and I've been disappointed in the graphics problems (looking at you partial black screen flashes) that keep popping up in DCS.

I don't own or run one myself but there are members in this forum that I do know run or have run 6800XT and XTX with success.

The bigger VRAM and wider memory bus come into play when you use 1440p and mostly at 4k resolution or VR.

For 1080p and 1440p the 3070 is still plenty wide in memory but it has too little VRAM for my taste of GPU, personally.

A 1440p monitor and a 6800XT are a perfect match, maybe too much GPU power even.

If you're not playing in VR, AMD cards make more sense right now. More VRAM and better performance for the same price.

For what's being talked about, the 4060 will most likely have 8gb VRAM and 128bit memory bandwidth, at an expensive price. So not a good deal at all.
