They will probably use high quality building textures, after all, those are just assets. You'll probably get to see the same buildings in a lot of different places in the world. 🙂 Then again, it's already done that way in existing maps (this also alleviates the "bomb your house" concern, as your neighborhood is unlikely to actually look the part).

Terrain, we'll see. There will probably be low and high detail areas. We can reasonably expect the install to bloat up in size, though.

Has anything been said on how they will do airfields ?

I know it will be a low detail map , except in areas where you have purchased detailed map areas. (As per Wags interview)

In order to be useful they would almost have to allow us to place some sort of generic airfield anywhere on the map (modern & ww2).

Otherwise we would have a massive map where aircraft cannot reach most areas. I cannot imagine them placing the airfields themselves.

Just the number would prohibit that.

This whole idea seems farfetched. ED doesn’t have the resources for a map like this nor is it necessary or suitable for a combat sim IMO especially one with historical eras. They’ve stated they can’t afford streaming technology either which is the only way a map of this size could work. If this has to fit on a local drive it will just be a bland auto-gen map without cities or airports like flight sims had 15-20 years ago.

I get your point. But there are whole world civil sims that work without streaming with only moderate disk space needed. And until DCS gets it released, maybe 1 Terrabyte SSD for that whole world isn't quite as much as it sounds today?

I like the spherical aspect of the project. On a flat earth, aircraft never disappear behind the horizon.

Right but they don’t look nearly good enough for what people expect here today. A civy sim global map is meant to be seen from high altitude. Combat games have action going on right at the ground. It’s going to just look really dull compared to the custom maps and to me those are preferable in a combat game. Battles take place in theaters. Not across the globe. DCS already has maps large enough for flights longer than most players are probably willing to do. The reason civy sims have global maps is variety, so you can fly to or from anywhere. But to me there isn’t a need to have battles in San Diego or Miami. The trade off in quality won’t be worth it for most people I imagine. My guess is players would rather see something like the Germany map up close vs being able to just fly for hours or stage action in odd places around the world.
My vote is a global map is dead last compared to all the other things DCS could have.

Maybe that’s the goal? Spherical maps but not global?
