Ramstein Posted February 8, 2009 Posted February 8, 2009 Is there a front wheel lock to keep it from turning left or right while the helo sits on the pad? Sometimes, often, the front wheel turns left/right and the helo tilts over if I am not at the controls holding the wheel and pedals. That sometimes causes the helo to tilt/tip to the side breaking the blades. I know there are wheel breaks, but that does not stop this from happening. fox_111 Posted February 8, 2009 Posted February 8, 2009 Press Shift W to put to wheel breaks. Also, if you trimmed with the rudder pressed, the wheels will also be turned I think. When landing, I unlock the wheels, and when I touch down, I reset my trim so I don't roll out of the pad, and put the breaks on.
Frederf Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 The front wheel is free castering and cannot be locked for swivel, only brakes applied (and I think the brakes are on the 2 main gear). I've never seen or experienced the Ka-50 trying to tip over or anything as a result of the front wheel castering in any direction. Strange.
ruprecht Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 I suspect if your helo is tipping over on the ground, you don't have your trim centralised. And it's brakes, (sorry). DarkWanderer Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 Try applying a little forward tilt. Wheel brakes will counter this, while this will place the wheels correctly. You want the best? Here i am...
ericinexile Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 Slight left or right cyclic really helps with nosewheel steering. Also, good technique might be to roll straight a couple of feet prior to setting brakes. Big_les Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 Which is what the training guy says. I still managed to have massive yaw on takeoff until I got some practice (and joystick deadzone) in.
Ramstein Posted February 9, 2009 Author Posted February 9, 2009 (edited) The helo is on the ground: If the helo is running at idle (or maybe not even running), engines have just started, and if you don't hold the stick.... I have had the front wheel caster to the side (left or right) and the helo tipping,, and breaking blades... :joystick: it looks like some of you pilots are trying to add stuff on that is not happening... or a different problem... the brakes do not stop this problem... though it does not always happen, it does happen once in a while.. I can see this happening if you have already set your trim (bad) like maybe off to the side.. and the idle is up.. but it front wheel freely casters left or right unless you keep it straight, and it looks like there is no brake or lock for it... as far as the parking brakes go,, they stop the rear wheels... which will not help with the front wheel.. Oh well.. just have to always keep the front wheel under control... dave4002000 Posted February 9, 2009 Posted February 9, 2009 When i land, i land a little short of where i actually want to, center the trim, roll forward a few feet to center the nose wheel, then apply the wheel brakes. This way i know the nose wheel is straight when i want to take off again. USAF Bomber Avionics Specialist, Ret.
