Even when standing on an illuminated patch of ground, the aircraft absorbs light like black pitch.

So the users have to dig up a doctor, and pay him 20 menthol Kools to do a surgical shine job on their eyeballs.

So they can see who is sneaking up on them in the darkness of the airport.

I never understood the need of some user to play the jockster everytime they see a chance ... it's rarely funny

It was a slightly altered quote from the movie. 
Seriously, if the airport is poorly lit, then the risk of an unintended collision while taxiing increases many times over. 
So, for example, I accidentally almost drove into a MiG-29, partly due to the mismatch of the map on the knee pad with the real map of the Nalchik airfield..
