Hi, I am as you can see from the activity in this forum the last week, grappling with understanding whats involved with setting up my new Quest pro and how various settings work and affect what you get in the visual experience.

In relation to the refresh rate settings, my card (3090) seems to run each setting in my test mission OK, the only difference being that on each settings, I am mostly, running at half of the refresh rate set, so either 45, 40 or 36. There is the occasional foray into full FPS, depending on loading. If I did not have the numbers displayed on the overlay though, I would be extremely hard pressed to tell any difference between the three settings.

So my question is, given little visual difference and the fact that my card / PC seems to be able to run each setting OK, albeit, mostly at half the refresh rate in FPS, what is better and why? Should I run at 36 (72Hz) mostly? Or 45 (90Hz) And why? I have the ASW set to auto in OTT.

Thank you.

In my opinion you should check with a heavier mission (better if arbitrarily heavy) in order to verify your settings in the worst possible scenario.
Let me know, as I have a 3090 and I would like to try the quest pro

Do you have any mission in particular in mind? I am on the same page as @markturner1960 bought Pro few days ago, and trying to optimize things as well, and I have EVGA 3080 Ti.

if there is no difference in visual quality then running at the fastest setting you can manage provides you a reduction in latency ... e.g. the lag between you doing something and it being an image you can see...

To test GPU performance, f18 Persian gulf instant action, or the Marianas Map.
To test CPU performance, there are a couple of missions with intensive scripting and full of AI

Personally I run 72hz so I can turn up a few more settings. It comes down to your tolerance of motion repojection and nausea. I don't get nauseous at 72/36, but some do.

It's just personal preference. With 36/72 you can crank up the settings and the game will look better, but the asw artifacts will "feel" worse. I run 45/90 as I prefer the smoothness, but most settings are on medium/low.

Just try both and see which one your brain prefers.

I don’t really see any artefacts from the ASW……certainly nothing like what you got using windows mixed reality.

@VirusAM I would very much recommend getting a quest pro, runs great on my PC and the image clarity and comfort are excellent.

could you try f-14 instant action in Syria Map?
Should be free flight lebanon  (something similar). It is a night take off in Beirut...After take off try some roll.

With Pico4 and Quest 2 I had heavy stutters and ghosting doing this....probably it was caused by compression/decompression...I would like to understand if it was a problem of my system, or something to cope with.

Thanks

11900kf and 4090 Ventus 3x here, i have come to the conclusion that I can only tolerate 72/36 with AWS on (OTT 45hz), with relatively high settings (PD 1.55, MSAA 4x, etc.) and because of AWS on, 45hz, I have to live with ghosting. with ASW off i have unbearable ground stuttering, unless I reduce PD and/or DCS settings. The ghosting bothers me little in cockpit, only annoyance is chasing a plane which will look like a biplane, due to the ghosting (best example, P51 quick mission Caucasus Dogfight vs. FW109D.

Hi Virus, so I tried that mission for you, and was getting 32- 35 , sometimes 36 on take off, IE was running at half refresh or below, so was being pushed. I did notice some stuttering and ghosting, associated with the buildings only though, but it was not terrible and only happened at lower level flight. I found I could circle over rthe city at around 6000ft with frames locked at 36 and no issues. I am running MSAA x4 currently. Hope that helps!

Thanks for your test...

My problem with VR (which I am not using at the moment) is this one...I cannot stand below the ASW (or any motion reprojection tech) threeshold.
I thought that upgrading to a 3090 would solve this in some way...but I did not get too much benefits upgrading from my older 2080ti

I'm on a 4090 and it's still very much there. When I played on the HP G2, though no where near as sharp, had far less severe ASW artifacts.
