Trying to decide between i9 13900k & 9 7950x3d or 7800x3d.

I would be upgrading from a 5800x

What complicates things is I use my PC as a DAW so having more & fast cores is a necessity.

I have a 4090 RTX card.

IL2 is another game limited by CPU but I'm not sure any of these cpu's would help it.

I also play FS2020 but due to its poor framerate not that much.

I suspect even these new processors are the limiting factor in these games rather than the 4090, any VR users on here have these CPU's?

Some time ago SkateZilla mentioned the advantage of AMD X3D CPUs for DCS VR. I tried to get more details but he never replied. Personally I think my next CPU will be an X3D model, since I saw other users being very positive about them as well: apparently the extra cache works very well in DCS.

Spoiler

Ryzen 9 5900X | 64GB G.Skill TridentZ 3600 | Asus ProArt RTX 4080 Super | ASUS ROG Strix X570-E GAMING | Samsung 990Pro 2TB + 960Pro 1TB NMVe | VR: Varjo Aero
Pro Flight Trainer Puma | VIRPIL MT-50CM2 grip on VPForce Rhino with Z-curve extension | Virpil CM3 throttle | Virpil CP2 + 3 | FSSB R3L | VPC Rotor TCS Plus base with SharKa-50 grip | Everything mounted on Monstertech MFC-1 | TPR rudder pedals

OpenXR | PD 1.0 | 100% render resolution | DCS graphics settings

I think that's the general consensus, i guess the problem for me is they are not so good for a DAW. With the 79503d it splits the CPU cores, so half a for gaming & half for productivity. Not sure how well that actually works in reality though. I'm tempted to wait for the next gen of intel & see what they do.

Take 13700 or 13900KF. 🙂

7950X3D or 7800X3D easy choice - DCS is now one of the highest thread utilising games out there

Intel counterparts are also good and honestly there is not much in it apart from a handful outliners such as ACC which 3D Cache curb stomps everything else. But then you need to realise that 13th Gen MB are dead-ends. You will still be able to pop in two more generations of AMD CPU's into your socket which is a big plus

In the end it doesn't matter because my 5800X3D can achieve 72FPS under all conditions [so far]. This is all that it needs to do, since I fly with QuestPro at 72hz - puts things into perspective

Will the issue of "correct core utilisation" creep up on you with 7950X3D. Maybe. So you will go from a hypothetical 290 CPU-FPS to 250 CPU-FPS? Do you care?

CPU does not really matter anymore since we got MT. It was limiting factor in ST. That said I have 7800x3d with 4090 and CPU frame time is 3ms.

The problem of DCS (and most of the game out there), is that the load is still not spread out evenly. So 1 or 2 cores are overloaded, while the rest is almost idling. There is still a lo of work to do regarding MT, to make use of it in full potential.

So, despite 7800X3D (or 7950X3D) are overall gaming kings, in DCS and specially in VR, the best option is 13900K atm.

Trust me It matters else i wouldn't need to upgrade.

So you are running DCS at what FPS in VR during missions?

3ms CPU frame-time sounds impressive & I'm almost sold on getting one but if its 3ms @ 40fps over the sea not so much.

Based on bench-marks?

In-fact just found this..

I don't have a horse in this race, and not to throw rocks at a glasshouse, but weird how he is testing the CPUs in the most GPU limited scenario possible within DCS (aka free flight)
