JOKERACTS Posted August 11, 2023 Posted August 11, 2023 What is the actual range of R-77 air to air missile? In DCS World encyclopedia it said to be at 50KM, while in Russian Wikipedia said at 100KM, English Wikipedia said at 80KM and Chinese Wikipedia said at 50KM ? Which one is the real specification? why is that missile was crappy in DCS World and only effective at very close range.
razo+r Posted August 11, 2023 Posted August 11, 2023 (edited) Range depends on many factors. Without knowing which factors resulted in which range numbers, it is impossible to say which number is the real number. Edited August 11, 2023 by razo+r 1

It's 50km at medium-high altitude shot from M0.9 against a head-on (non maneuvering) target with the same parameters and 100km shot from 15000-20000m altitude at mach 2 against a target with similar parameters. 1 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda

Do we actually know that, or is this an assumption? If so, based on what?
GGTharos Posted August 28, 2023 Posted August 28, 2023 Google and the search on this forum are at your fingertips. This is at least half a decade if not more old subject for me, so I won't be repeating that homework 1 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda

No more speculative then AiM9 or Aim120 or aim 54. They are all based on publicly available data, and shifting through various sources. Unlike moduals the weapons in DCS (especially air to air missiles) are far less exactly modelled with less "hard facts " i7 13700k @5.2ghz, GTX 3090, 64Gig ram 4800mhz DDR5, M2 drive.

Should have just not said anything. In fact, most public information on the missile suggests that (bar a huge drag coefficient for some reason).. it has nearly doubled the stated range of 50km even at 10km altitude from mach 1 launch.

From a book long long ago. 50 km for a Mach 1 shot at 10 km vs Mach 1 target seems right on the money. You often see 80 km also quoted, this is right around 15 km mark, so likely maximum range for high speed launch from Su-27/MiG-29 At 20 km, It can go up to 100 km, so likely only reached by MiG-31 launch on an equally fast and high target This chart is likely for max TAS, as we see from other similar 80s/90s Soviet/Russian charts. From testing in DCS, this seems pretty close Edited November 10, 2024 by AeriaGloria 1 Black Shark Den Squadron Member: We are open to new recruits, click here to check us out or apply to join! https://blacksharkden.com
Pavlin_33 Posted November 29, 2024 Posted November 29, 2024 If you consider the 77 as a radar guided 73, then it's not crappy Anything else and you will get dissapointed. Oh and also don't forget to kindly ask your target not to throw chaff i5-4690K CPU 3.50Ghz @ 4.10GHz; 32GB DDR3 1600MHz; GeForce GTX 1660 Super; LG IPS225@1920x1080; Samsung SSD 860 EVO 1TB; Windows 10 Pro
