EtherealN…. Thanks for your comments but the phrase ‘Target of opportunity” unfortunately springs to mind. I’m sure that the developers of what I believe is one of the finest simulators on the market have got this ‘In hand’ as I’m sure no one wishes to see this turned into a ‘Shoot up game’. The solution will certainly prove interesting. Anyway I'm still voting Heli ;)

Well, but targets of opportunity are valid for all parts of it. And I would venture that insofar as mission objectives (and therefore winning the battle, if not the dogfight) goes, it is easier for a helicopter to detect and successfully engage a target of opportunity.

And on the person mentioning the lack of UH-1 sims, there is an acceptable (not really more than acceptable tho) sim of it called Vietnam Medevac. Made by the same people that did the SAR (Search and Rescue) series of civilian chopper sims. I have SAR4 and Vietnam Medevac somewhere on a disc that came as a bargain-bin package, and if you find them in a bargain bin they're definitely worth spending like 10-15 dollars on. SAR4 is much better than Vietnam Medevac though in simple gameplay, since you get to work with attempting real high-sea rescues and so on which is much better implemented than their attempts at combat medevac scenarios in the Vietnam game.

Sorry, I have not read through all the pages in this thread. Also, I know the poll is for a chopper or a mud mover but I don't care. GIVE ME A FAST MOVER FIRST :)

I bet you overall the jet fans outnumber the helo/attack fans in the sim market. ED would probably sell more of a Jet module. It seems however, that they are going with what they feel is best for them overall, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Well, consider you would get one jet first, then A10, AH-64A, Hind, Su25, I bet you'd find your fast jet pretty boring only matching AI or your own aircraft just with another nationality painted on the belly for 3 years+ before another fast-mover was implemented. :smilewink:

I would like to see an AH-1Z or why not a Whiskey... but I know the Corps is only testing right now so probably hard for the developers to get good intel on all of the systems for the Zulu. I’m a dreamer... so the AH-64 would be nice, haven’t flown one in a sim since Longbow 2 which was great for its time. Either way DCS is shaping up to be an absolutely amazing flight simulation series.

Evidently we're going to see the A-10 any way. So lets see the Apache next. This poll does show something interesting though ... we're split down the middle ... :D

Don't get me wrong I enjoy DCS and I love to move mud in the Su-25T in Lock On. A multi-role fighter such as a F/A-18 can do it all!

Nope, no fast mover performs at a level anywhere near the A-10's in terms of low level, CAS oriented missions. If there was anything in the USAF's fleet that could do it better, they would have ousted the Hog a long time ago. And they certainly have tried, but when it comes down to in theatre results, the A-10 delivers better than anything else.

There's talk of phasing it out over the next 30 years or so with the F-35, but I'm skeptical about that as well... jack of all trades, master of none.

Crunch - Its not a question of 'do we want to do it' but a question of 'can we do it?' , 'can we get all the info for it?'.

The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.

Agreed.

And beyond that, Crunch:

The F/A-18 is not the alternative, as most of the information is still classified. So you're rather closer to get a Mig29 or similar jet, not a top-notch multi-role-fighter.

I have a question: am I the only one who thinks that the A-10 is one of the most beautiful aircraft ever build? I just love its design to bits and I can't really understand why the call it Warthog. Warthogs are ugly this bird isn't. ;)

its just you..... I kid. It is a very beautiful aircraft......

After a few.

Why can't people see the beauty of warthogs? Graceful animals, I adore them.

If you live to fly again, it's a successful landing. The plane being able to fly again is just a bonus.

indeed the Apache does give a multi-player platform which is good.

It's only good when the engine can meet these goals.

Makes sense else the A-10 would not be active. Like I said, I know that ED will do what makes sense for them in terms of info available, ties with government contracts, sales, etc. and that's the right thing to do. Just that in my own greedy opinion and what I think would sell best, a fast mover would be the way to go. Of course I have no market research and while a poll is a cool idea, it wouldn't be representative of the full sim market, just this forum.

Multiplayer co-op is fun for ground attack but player vs. player is better suited for A2A and fighter jets. It's been said on these forums that people who play Lock On's multiplayer are only a small percentage of ED's total sales and I imagine it's true of Blackshark. I think however, being that multiplayer is the biggest market in PC gaming, that if ED expanded it's multiplayer aspects in the DCS series they could maybe tap that market. Push the mp aspect of their sims with the arcade modes, (like tom clancy's hawx) and use current ideas from MMO gaming. Of course leaving all the hi-fidelity sim aspects in touch for us.

I don't represent an entire market...just one individual. But I enjoy the co-op potential of multiplayer strike crafts over the dogfight of A2A. Ultimately the two together are the best, human pilots covering human strikers. Whenever possible I fly strikers in LOMAC (which isn't often) because I can't help getting gang banged by fighter boys looking for an easy kill. (Not that there's anything wrong with that)...just sucks when I want to kill ground targets with a few wingies.

Online play is definiately the future of simming. I think everybody's about had it with AI heheh. The series will grow and I have no doubt fast movers will make their appearence.

Until then, we should support their efforts so that they can continue to develope the product.

If and when they do the fast movers it wont be the modern day fighters but older ones...

You know, I hear this complaint all the time; this isn't necessarily directed at you, but if you're going to an ONLINE PVP SERVER to 'just kill a few ground targets', expect NO mercy from the opposing side's fighters. You're killing their guys, and they're losing the mission by definition. It has nothing to do with an easy kill in most cases.

The feeling of helplesness on the side of the ground-pounders is compounded by the fact that most of them utterly suck at A2A, and are incapable of defending themselves - and not only that, but they lack the 'trcisk of the trade' to escape or at least delay the engagement until help arrives; they just give up because they think once they get a fighter radar nail they're dead and helpless.

If you want to 'just kill some ground targets', get into an A2G server or run your own private COOP.

I utterly suck at A2A, thats why I move mud... Its a lot more fun and challenging... to me anyway.

I voted for AH-64A, I always thought that this would be the first one to get release but again the A-10C is more logical. AH-64A is really cool rather than D in my opinion, it's like a more raw flying if you know what I mean. Again what I really wish to see is a Cobra at some time. Maybe a AH-1F. Would be really cool! Other than that I think we all can wait for the release because;

a) We have Ka-50.

b) We will have A-10.

c) Then we get AH-64.

d) Please! More helicopters! LOL

I was merely stating the type of gameplay and the type of gameplay environment I prefer to fly in. To be a strike craft in a fighter A2A environment of HL (which is like 96% of the HL environment) is a known risk. Everybody knows the risks that entails when you join up...they're complaints are still valid. HL is disorganized at best and the co-op features of a sim like LOMAC are often overlooked.

REDFLAG's are ENTIRELY more organized, but those come around once in a blue moon. So HL is all LOMAC players (fighters/strikers) really have to play in.

Not that there's anything wrong with it, but HL for the most part is guys looking to score some kills...(easy or not...they'll take what they can get). Understandably it's frustrating for strikers who want to practice their craft, but can't really because they're getting shot out of the sky with no fighter support (or lack of terrain cover)

Anyway, there are reasons for the complaints that you are hearing...despite the factors that you've stated.
