aaronwhite Posted May 26, 2024 Posted May 26, 2024 Greetings all, Not sure if this is an isolated incident, but I thought I might post about it just in case others are running into it. I'm experiencing crashes, but only during the F-4E training missions (I've only tried out the first and second ones so far trying to learn the jet properly). It's crashed to desktop maybe 5 times. I've flown the F-4 outside of the training missions without problem, and my computer is pretty new and should have the horsepower needed for DCS. So far I've tried the general startup mission, and made it to different points in that before crashing, I think I was able to complete it once. Then I've tried the taxi and takeoff training twice, with a crash both times. I tried to sanity check by flying the Taxi/Takeoff Hornet training, and was able to do that without crashing. Then I was able to fly the F-4 itself in a created mission of my own, though without much on the map and didn't run into any issues there. I was thinking about maybe dropping all of the settings down to a lower level just to eliminate the potential for a hardware issue, but I haven't noticed any framerate or performance issues so far flying the F-4. I'll toss my specs below and then hopefully this evening I can run another training mission to grab the logs when/if it crashes again. PC Specs: Processor: Intel® Core™ i9-14900KS Processor (8X 3.20GHz + 16X 2.40GHz/36MB L3 Cache) Motherboard: ASUS PRIME Z790-V WiFi - WiFi 5, ARGB Header (3), USB 3.2 Ports (1 Type-C, 3 Type-A), M.2 Slot (3) Memory: 64 GB [32 GB X2] DDR5-6000MHz Memory Module - Certified Major Brand Gaming Memory Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER - 16GB GDDR6X (DLSS 3.5 – AI-Powered Performance) PNY VERTO OC Power Supply: 1000 Watt - CORSAIR RM1000e - 80 PLUS Gold PCIe GEN 5, Fully Modular Primary Storage: 1TB WD Blue SN580 M.2 PCIe GEN 4 NVMe SSD
HB_Painter Posted May 27, 2024 Posted May 27, 2024 Hey thanks for the report! The logs would be much appreciated than we can take a look 1
aaronwhite Posted May 27, 2024 Author Posted May 27, 2024 Will do, @HB_Painter! I've got the day off so I was going to work on learning the F-4 and I'll throw in a few training missions to grab some logs in the event that it crashes again. 1
Q3ark Posted May 27, 2024 Posted May 27, 2024 Have you got any mods installed? Even mods completely unrelated to the module can cause dramas, it’s a DCS thing. 1

Should be good there. It's a pretty brand new install of DCS, since I just got this new computer about a month ago and with my recent move, still hadn't been able to fly anything until this past week.

aaronwhite Posted May 27, 2024 Author Posted May 27, 2024 Alright, just tested it out on the first training mission and had a crash at the Pitot heat section. I was flying the F-4 before that on a user made mission and had a crash on the Persian Gulf map shortly after a runway takeoff start, and then before that I had a full cold/dark startup on the Caucasus Map with the F-4 that I flew around for probably 30 minutes without issue. I'm not sure what all way included, but it just crashed aroudcs.lognd 9:09CST for me.

The log shows several instances of this error: "APP (Main): Error: Unit [F-4E-45MC]: Corrupt damage model." On the same missions, my DCS shows no such error, maybe you have some corrupt files .. have you tried to repair your dcs install with the DCS_Updater utility? 1 For work: iMac mid-2010 of 27" - Core i7 870 - 6 GB DDR3 1333 MHz - ATI HD5670 - SSD 256 GB - HDD 2 TB - macOS High Sierra For Gaming: 34" Monitor - Ryzen 3600 - 32 GB DDR4 2400 - nVidia RTX2080 - SSD 1.25 TB - HDD 10 TB - Win10 Pro - TM HOTAS Cougar Mobile: iPad Pro 12.9" of 256 GB

Yeah, scrolling through, I noticed that as well. I did run the repair DCS after the first one. I'll try a full repair and then report back.
Smokehouse Posted May 27, 2024 Posted May 27, 2024 (edited) Same here. Tried 4 different training mission and all CTD. This after a full repair Edited May 27, 2024 by Smokehouse

This after a full repair I'm going to try a full repair with "Check All Files" and if that doesn't work, I'll try a clean install. Luckily for me, since I just got the new computer up and running recently, I'm not missing out on much besides a few downloaded skins.
aaronwhite Posted May 27, 2024 Author Posted May 27, 2024 Alright, I was optimistic for a second there, but I ran into another crash. I started up and did the first training mission to completion without a crash, then started up the second one and got a good way through it before it crashed on me. Looks like it's the same sound issues I saw previously. I'm going to do a complete re-install just to eliminate that issue, but I'll throw my log in here just in case. dcs.log
aaronwhite Posted May 27, 2024 Author Posted May 27, 2024 Alright, the testing continues. I uninstalled and re-installed DCS and all of the modules, and started up the first training mission. Looks like it's still showing the issues from before for some odd reason. dcs.log
aaronwhite Posted May 27, 2024 Author Posted May 27, 2024 I'm going to continue testing. Since I've been playing with a headset on, and the audio seems to be a point of issue from what I can gather, I'm going to try and run it without the headset through my speakers, and I'll also test it running DCS World as Admin and as a standard user just to make sure there's no issues there with accessing files or anything from what I can tell.
treg12 Posted May 27, 2024 Posted May 27, 2024 hi all, i did not try these training missions but tried to put the F4 into a super carrier mission ... game crashed .. until i un-coupled the interaction with the carrier module ... just placed the F4 somewhere on the map .. done so, the mission didn´t crash anymore. .... even carrier landing & start (no catapult offcourse) possible. maybe this is helpful (would think, rootcause maybe interaction w/ stuff in the map). best rgds 1
aaronwhite Posted May 27, 2024 Author Posted May 27, 2024 (edited) Annnnnd the testing goes onward. I ran a test using the speakers on my desk instead of the headphones I've been playing with lately. Started up the Training 2 mission, got to the section where you are configuring the TACAN switches and crashed there. So far the crashes aren't occurring at the same time or place in the training. The only similarity seems to be the ERROR ED_SOUND (Main) issues that I'm seeing in the logs. dcs.log Edited May 27, 2024 by aaronwhite
aaronwhite Posted May 27, 2024 Author Posted May 27, 2024 Tried a self-created mission on the PG Map with just 6 enemy aircraft and some static aircraft. Went from Cold/Dark to up and running, taxied to the runway and just around rotation crashed, so it may not be entirely tied to the training missions. dcs.log
KilroyWasHereF14 Posted May 28, 2024 Posted May 28, 2024 Having a similar issue except I'm not even getting into the cockpit. Crashing on Spawning Objects. 1

You can attach your game logs. It'll make it a bit easier for Heatblur to hopefully figure out the issue. Might even be something in there that can clue you in. If you haven't yet, you might also try doing a full game repair, though that's not guaranteed to fix things (It didn't for me).
aaronwhite Posted May 28, 2024 Author Posted May 28, 2024 @HB_PainterHope you don't mind the ping, just wanted to let you know I've got a small handful of logs for you now. Let me know if there's any testing ideas you've got that I could run through to give you all some better information to work with.
Smokehouse Posted May 28, 2024 Posted May 28, 2024 Solved the problem with the CTD's in the F-4. My Virus protection (PC Matic) has to be turned off while in the F-4. Go figure

I can't imagine Defender would be blocking anything, but it is pretty aggressive with removing files it sees as malicious, even if it's a false positive. Edit: Searched through my Windows Defender logs and the EventViewer just to see, no luck finding anything there for my case. Double Edit: Digging through a bit more, it looks like most all of the crashes reference in Event Viewer reference ModuleName edCore.dll. Looks like ExceptionCode c00000fd which as far as I can tell from some Google searching is potentially tied to stack overflows. Not sure if that helps, but I'll keep digging around. TRIPLE EDIT: Okay, I'm going to test something more. I would hope that the 64GB of RAM my system is already using would be enough on top of the NVMe SSD, but just to be safe, I went ahead and used my two spare SSD's that are installed in the machine to set as system assigned page files. My current total page file size is 28GB, on top of the RAM, so I'll try and run a test mission tonight and see if that turns up anything. Edited May 28, 2024 by aaronwhite

KilroyWasHereF14 Posted May 29, 2024 Posted May 29, 2024 (edited) @aaronwhite I added in my log. Something I forgot to add is that I'm on Pop OS dcs.log Edited May 29, 2024 by KilroyWasHereF14
Smokehouse Posted May 29, 2024 Posted May 29, 2024 FYI, I have had problems before with Defender. I now always turn it off when running the Sim. Now I will not use PCMatic until a fix is applied
