Yes, this has always been the case. Best practice is use a multiplayer server and use the Server's track file. Track Files are problem solving tools, not video makers, so that they still work at all is amazing really.

And that’s been that way for most if not the whole life of the Tomcat. There’s too much behind the screen going on for the primitive track system to keep up.

Last year ED made changes that improved the tracks a lot, for the Tomcat too, which was confirmed by many players.

Improved Replays/Tracks: Improved track replay for human controlled aircraft by conducting more frequent continuity checks, WIP. - Note, increased track file data size when saved to disk.

Maybe it got worse again or maybe @Silent Film expects something that wasn't the role and purpose of the tracking system. Mind that SP track runs the simulation from the same starting parameters and reproduces user inputs at limited polling rate. All the rest is calculated in real time, all AI and weapons movements and decisions can be different each time you play the track. So it depends on what you do and how long the track is.

There is also the other type of tracks from a server side which actually tracks the units/weapons positions instead and can be more reliable but you will have only external views available - no cockpit, comms, messages, warnings, diplay exports...
