Just thought I'd ask before investing too much time on testing and making tracks:

I feel like you used to be able to trigger the TGP laser basically whenever by pressing the NWS button, as long as it was armed. Testing just a moment ago me and my buddy were only able to get it actively lasing (which we defined as "L flashing on TGP display") when we were in active point track, with the target boxed. Area track and point track that wasn't locked on to a target didn't allow the laser to go active.

Is this a newish thing? Are there ways to adjust this behavior? Are there some other conditions to lasing that I might be unaware of, that could have accidentally coincided with point track (like having to be close enough)?

I've just done a bit of self- and buddy-lasing earlier tonight and found no issues with firing the laser in area track.

Regardless of the tracking mode in question, masking is always a concern. In DCS, we have a fixed masking shape (M4, if memory serves) regardless of what ordnance is loaded on the jet. Whenever you see the "M" indication on the TGP, it is masked. This may also occur when you have a perfect picture of your target in the TGP. It's enough that there might be a fin or a bomb body in the way, if one was loaded on a particular station.

If you can recreate the issue in a short track or share a video of it happening, it most likely will show the "M" indication. This should be completely unrelated to the TGP being slaved or in area or point track.

Other random ideas/reasons laser doesn't turn on or work as expected:

  • laser ran more than ~20 minutes/forgot to turn it off previously
  • forgot to turn laser arm switch on
  • accidentally turned off Laser button latching on TGP
  • TGP laser masks near limits, even if video is still visible.

Nothing mirrors your case, obviously, but for sanity checking.  Otherwise, I rechecked it a couple nights ago and the laser seemed to work fine
