4c Hajduk Veljko Posted March 25, 2005 Posted March 25, 2005 What we need here is somebody who knows how Bit Torent works. As soon as the game is released we need to seed Bit Torent and have community leave their computers on for hours at the time! I have 512 KB/s upload connection and as soon as I get FC in bit torent, I will leave my computer ON for hours at the time. Orao Posted March 25, 2005 Posted March 25, 2005 Don't you think that it's a little bit dangerous to do that ??? As long as it goes by ED servers they can know who is downloading this game.
Joe Kurr Posted March 25, 2005 Posted March 25, 2005 Distribution via BitTorrent can be a good thing. This way the load is spread across many PCs. With this kind of distribution, you don't pay to download the game, but you'd have to pay when you first install it (software activation). One drawback could be that your PC needs to be on the internet to activate the game. But I think it's a bit too late for ED to implement this :) Dutch Flanker Display Team | LLTM 2010 Tiger Spirit Award
Fellblade Posted March 25, 2005 Posted March 25, 2005 'Implement' bittorrent? It's not like it's that difficult
Slopey Posted March 25, 2005 Posted March 25, 2005 The 5th? Awww nuts - Im at a conference from the 6th-11th!!! Fell - Im coming round to your house mate! ;) Я говорю по-руссии очень плохо!
GoonerTC Posted March 25, 2005 Posted March 25, 2005 This is how the demo eventually got out to the masses, I downloaded the demo from the site but lost it right at the end with a disconnection problem so i was well pissed. I tried to log back onto the lockon.ru homepage but the volume of traffic had brought the site down on its knees. I then saw a link on one of the forum pages with a 'bit torrent' download of the demo. and I managed to download the demo in 1ish hour. Its faster and the more people who use BT the quicker it will get to the masses as before. Yes the only problem is how will it be tracked and how will you pay for the game.. Lets just hope that ED has learned from the mistake of launching the demo on this site and come up with many mirrors to keep the site open and the download speeds respectible. Cheers TC
Joe Kurr Posted March 25, 2005 Posted March 25, 2005 'Implement' bittorrent? It's not like it's that difficult Implement the product activation in a way that everyone can download the game, but only people who pay and receive an activation file can play it. Revvin Posted March 25, 2005 Posted March 25, 2005 I would rather seen them offer a secure download link once you've paid than let any tom dick or harry download it and get a crack to play it. Don't have Bit Torrent on my system either and don't want to.
Slopey Posted March 25, 2005 Posted March 25, 2005 Ahh, but then if it's a secure download link and the security is not built into the client, then all it takes is one malicious customer to offer it via P2P and everyone will be able to play it anyway. Bittorrent is a fantastic way to distribute software (look at WoW patches for example) at release, (its effectiveness dies off later), but only if the authentication is built into the product at the client end. You should'nt have any reservations about not running Bittorrent - if you're not actively seeding/downloading, it does nothing. Я говорю по-руссии очень плохо!
Revvin Posted March 25, 2005 Posted March 25, 2005 No the download would be protected by Starforce anyway, the secure download is just another level of protection. If the download is offered up on Bittorrent you're just giving easier access to the files for the pirates to crack. Security is a concern for me so I don't want install anymore programs than necessary that can be exploited.
Slopey Posted March 25, 2005 Posted March 25, 2005 you're just giving easier access to the files for the pirates to crack It does'nt make any odds. Once FC is released it'll be cracked and on the P2P networks within a week. For fee paying customers however Bittorrent delivery will be great - either ED will seed it themselves or someone will anyway. Я говорю по-руссии очень плохо!
Revvin Posted March 25, 2005 Posted March 25, 2005 It does'nt make any odds. Once FC is released it'll be cracked and on the P2P networks within a week. I'm not denying that but there is no need to make it easier for the pirates to get their hands on the files in the first place. Do you lock you car and take your keys indoors with you or do you lock the car then hang the keys outside just out of arms reach somewhere? The theif could still break the window and steal it if you protected the keys by taking them with you but it's harder for him to steal the car than if you left them hanging up outside for him, not much but enough to deter the casual car thief.
JG27_Arklight Posted March 25, 2005 Posted March 25, 2005 If they had implemented the Flight1 key system this could have all been a month ago. Although I'm not sure how much said key system cost to implement. Revvin Posted March 25, 2005 Posted March 25, 2005 Just figure a little extra security by making the download secure would'nt hurt but as long as there is a choice to download without installing Bittorrent then I'll be a happy sim pilot.
