Occasional freezes

Hi, I play VR with 7800x3d/4080/64ddr5@6k with almost all gfx setting at max and I got very good headroom (never below +30% for both CPU/GPU). However, expecially when taxi or just before landing, I got some "freeze" for a moment (not a stuttering, just a stop and go), just as a loading is underway.

With my old PC, with lower setting to achieve some good performance, I never notice this problem. Maybe is due to a specific gfx setting that I maxed out? Thanks for help.

In Windows do you have both the DCS game folder and the User Folder in saved games added to an exception in Windows Defender?  This can cause the problem you are describing as it runs a scan when the program calls on files.

good suggestion from rebel. also see if there is any sort of disk process going on like in my case i had my windows desktop backgrounds in slide show. it was an unwanted disk read. however i lean towards rebel's suggestion as best choice.

I got Avast, no exclusion seems available for defender. However I put an exclusion for Avast and I'll try. It is a bit strange to me because it happens just in at ground or near at it, but I'll try your suggestion, thanks!

roger. of course freeze is a symptom of many other things. i mean even a huge pre-load radius can cause freeze. especially on the ground. as a test look upwards at sky when on ground to see if you get freeze.

Hi, I made some tests turning off AV and changing pre-load but I didn't notice any effect. However I better understand what happen. Maybe freeze is not the right definition because it is strictly associated to heavy situation when headroom are not so much (about +10% GPU). So, it happen a big frame drop just for a moment (eg. during a turning in taxi) than it is all ok. Can be related to the huge map (Syria)? Thanks

yes could be i suppose. possibly the map is not completely loaded. attach your dcs.log for review. maybe something in it will be a clue.

Here the log with a bit of fps drop at taxi/take off. Thanks for the support!

there are many ERROR events in your log. i did not count but i estimate over 1000. not all would be an issue because there are always errors in dcs.log. with that said these could be causing the issues.

seems you have some texture problems and also a weird resolution error

you can temporarily disable mods and do a repair. see if that helps. oh-58d is especially known for problems in some systems.

Thanks for your replay. It is weird because: I never installed a mod in DCS, I don't have the oh-58 and the log is from a mission of an official campaign with fa18 (ops cerebus north)! To be honest I don't remember texture install, except (perhaps) from a couple of official campaign or well known free one. However I'll try a repair, thanks!

I also notice you have a lot of OpenXR headset related items in the logs. These are not something I've seen to the same extent in other logs in the past, e.g. here is one snippet. These are repeated about ~10 times with about 2 minutes in between some of them. How is your headset connected to your PC?

The log seems to indicate that it takes a really long time to load into missions, minutes at a time? How long does it feel like on your end?

Here are two cellphone-shot video showing even in 2D mission editor, we also see the occassional freezes issues. Be noted that I tried to move the mouse as smooth as possible yet you still see glitches and jumping fps, sometimes it freezes for a few seconds, making the mission editor un-editable, very frustrated. This issue seems persisted for quite a long time and please prioritize this.

hello. you should start your own topic. your issues could be caused by something unrelated to the OP's problem. not everyone has the issue and it is probably difficult for ED to troubleshoot "me too" replies.

if you post one i will help. upload dcs.log is primary evidence.

Hi, It Is connected by original link cable. The loading is about 2 minutes. Today I unistalled-installed dcs, I'll check ASAP. Thanks for support.

Here my last log after uninstall/install, with similar situation. Please note that my pc is brand new (just a couple of weeks, so no mess with OS or drivers, just an ssd transfer with steam, but theninstall/isinstall procedure should delete any old problems). Thanks.

hello. i suggest as a test to change from MSAA to TAA

Set Preload Radius to max. 30000.
Enable Full Screen mode.
Disable civil traffic.
Consider using TAA instead of MSAA.

see if these changes matter. MSAA is a known resource hog.

In the end i convinced myself that it is a question of performance in particular situations. Always in the same campaign, another mission, no freeze. Probably, even if there is enough headroom and the fps are ok, here and there, sudden and momentary fps drops can happen during taxi/take off/landing. The solution of silverdavil - turn down details - may works considering that seems mission-dependet, but this is probably something I have to live with, as it doesn't make much sense to significantly lower the details and have 99.9% of the flight with +50% headroom just for a couple of freezes during taxi just in some mission/theatre. In any case, it leaves me perplexed to see so many errors in the .log despite a "clean" installation

unfortunately in DCS logs, much like windows events, there are always errors in the logs. most of the time i see nothing relevant. i personally and regularly have upwards of 300 errors in my log. for modules that are not even in the mission i am flying. why? i wish i knew.

good luck and clear skies.

Here after reading the previous messages I also come to bring my experience on the subject.
since the last update, I get image freezes after a few minutes of flights, rarely at the beginning of the flight, on all maps and all modules without exception.
These small image freezes last from 1 second to 3/4 seconds and intermittently, but I noticed that it is getting more and more amplified, and yet in October I had never had this problem of image freezing and my computer is still the same.🤔

I had similar problem, exactly as described by topic starter - i.e. some "freeze" for a moment (not a stuttering, just a stop and go), just as a loading is underway.

I tried everything without any success (power control settings, driver updates, etc.), in the end I remembered that I installed new printer just before problem has appeared.

Problem was solved by completely removing printer from system. Suspect printer driver had a problem.

Probably my solution will be helpful for someone.

intriguing and definitely a viable solution. lots of printers have drivers that keep contact with the printer of the printers status. like out-of-paper notice. good catch.
