F-15 MSIP, SU-27SM, 90s Tech Weapons

The F-15 received a major upgrade in 1991 and then again in the mid 90s. It would open up a whole new world in mission making to be able to simulate mid and late 90s combat in an alternate timeline where the cold war continues into the 90s and goes hot. Add some B-2 Bombers to the mix, and we could even make a Kosovo map and simulate the Yugoslav and Kosovo civil wars. I would love to see how a 90s Su-27SM would fare against the contemporary F-15s at the time. So far, there is no way of creating a realistic mission for anything past 1991 since the sim is still almost entirely based around late Cold War planes.

You seem to be locked on some kind of balance which is rare IRL - many wars and conflicts you'd call assymmetric warfare and can be realistically recreated in DCS.

But I agree we need more modern Redfor aircraft - even as AI only.

I meant just high intensity conflicts between nation-states. But having PLO and HAMAS/Hezbollah units would be great for the Syria map.

Dittos on that, unless things drastically change I don't expect to see any flyable modern RedFor, but for PVE and single scenario we might have enough information for AI assets.

SM is still classified.

1) F-15 MSIP II with all technology used in 1991 Gulf War (NCTR, MFD, TWS, AMRAAM integration, MIL-STD-1553, ALR-56C etc.), entered combat units in 1985.

2) Very fIrst Su-27SM started to enter service in 2004-2005. 20 yers later. With very limited numbers. Up to 2010 only 55-60 airframes have been modernized.

3) F-15C fleet started to receive significant upgrades (Link 16, GPS nav, JHMCS, AESA radars etc.) only in mid 2000s. (saving F-22 program against post-Cold War reduction was eating up all the resources for F-15 modernization)

4) R-77 officially entered service in Russian Air Forece only in 2015. Before that Russians just tested different prototypes and produced limited numbers for export to India and China.

Overall, the 1990s were a relatively stagnant period for military aviation. The collapse of the Soviet Union and the emergence of a much smaller Russia led to massive reductions in military capabilities, number of aircrafs, active airfields and spending in Russia. Meanwhile, the United States, lacking a symmetrical opponent after the end of the Cold War, also scaled back its defense financing.

FYI Su-30mkk uses the same avionics so each would be mostly equivalent.

I thought the F-15 received an upgrade in 1991 after the Gulf War. This is why I wanted to make a 90s mission based on someone like Putin coming to power instead of Gorbachev.

If it did it was pretty minor. MSIP II was pretty much the standard from 1986 to the early 2000s.

but it was no Su-27SM in the 90s! first flight of Su-27SM was 2002
