Joe Kurr Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 Last weekend, Volkel Airbase opened its gates for the annual RNLAF Open Days. This year I was one of 400 fortunate spotters who were allowed on-base on Thursday, the main arrival day. Below is a small impression of the spotters day: C-160 Transall of the Turkish Stars, with a USAF C-17A in the background Full reverse An SH-14D Lynx of the Dutch navy is being placed on the static show, right in front of us "Orange 2", the RNLAF F-16 Demoteam scooter, with the coach 'Bitch' (waving), and pilot 'Sheik' on the back seat The Spanish EF-18A is practicing its display During his high-speed pass, he hit Mach 0.99, resulting in visible shockwaves above the aircraft. Another rare participant to Dutch airshows is this Slovakian L-39ZA Albatross Another addition to the static show: a German Bo-105CB A PC-7 elementary trainer aircraft taxiing towards Hangar 3, the main recruiting place of the Dutch Airforce The new Dutch demo F-16, here with coach 'Omelet' at the controls, on its way to escort the Polish MiG-29UB F-16BM J-066 'Orange Jumper'. This is the most modern F-16 in the Dutch airforce, currently being used for testing the new M5 avionics package. Another highlight at the static line: a Greek F-16D Block 52+, which flew non-stop from its home-base to Volkel. The Polish MiG-29UB has arrived The 'Orange Jumper' on its way to its spot on the static show 'Omelet' laat nog even de bovenkant van de kist zien, voordat hij binnenkomt voor de landing. Before landing, 'Omelet' does a nice knife-edge flyby showing the Dutch Lion on the top of the demo F-16 The Dutch F-16 Demoteam represents KiKa, a foundation to prevent cancer in children. Every spotter entering the airbase donated a small amount of money, which was handed to F-16 demo pilot 'Sheik'. The sign he is holding says: "The participants to the spotters day at Volkel on June 18th, 2009, donate the RNLAF F-16 Display Team on behalf of the KiKa Foundation the amount of 1000 Euros" Another nice Slovakian participant: an Antonov An-26 And yet another helicopter landing in front of us: a Royal Navy Lynx Patrouille de France was nog druk aan het verkennen en oefenen In the afternoon, the Patrouille de France took off to locate landmarks and practice their display. That's it for now, next up: Friday - Airshow Day 1 3 Dutch Flanker Display Team | LLTM 2010 Tiger Spirit Award

RvETito Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 Very nice shots indeed! My own, less impressive, shots can be found here: http://www.51st.org/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=1921 Just has a look at your pics, Case. Strange to see the polish MiG is flying with external tank- that limits it to maximum G of 5.5. "See, to me that's a stupid instrument. It tells what your angle of attack is. If you don't know you shouldn't be flying." - Chuck Yeager, from the back seat of F-15D at age 89. =RvE=
nscode Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 And no flare dispensers if I see corectly. It's not like they're gona do anything new in it. And when you show up in a 29, you're impressive enough even at 1G ;) Never forget that World War III was not Cold for most of us.
Case Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 Just has a look at your pics, Case. Strange to see the polish MiG is flying with external tank- that limits it to maximum G of 5.5.That was what I was asking myself when he did that display, and it certainly looked as if he pulled a lot more than 5.5G, though it is hard to estimate that from just by looking at it... It did pull a much smaller high-G level turn when compared to the F-16 and F-18. Here's a Youtube video of the display: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwOtGpN-cHA (thanks to Sniffer for pointing this out). There are only 10 types of people in the world: Those who understand binary, and those who don't.
Vekkinho Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 The initial pull-up at the beggining of the video is a 6G! 4:38-4:40 is a 7.5G turn but again I've been clubbed to death with a fact assuring me that Fulcrum cannot pull more that 5.5G if sporting a tank and cannot turn more than 17° sustained so I believe this track you've sent is fake! It's not even from Holland, it's probably a Russian propaganda video! [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
nscode Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 maybe the limit is for a full tank? :D Never forget that World War III was not Cold for most of us.
Case Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 maybe the limit is for a full tank? :DThat is what I was thinking as well. Especially during an airshow you are not flying with a full tank... but when you're flying back to Poland you most likely will have to... It was a good demo though. The MiG was the final plane to fly that day and I noticed I had a grin from ear to ear when it was done :) There are only 10 types of people in the world: Those who understand binary, and those who don't.
Joe Kurr Posted June 22, 2009 Author Posted June 22, 2009 (edited) Two pics of the MiG-29 demo on Friday: Personally I found the MiG-29 demo a bit dull. Its display was comparable to that of both F-16s, while the MiG-29 is capable of much more. It didn't perform the famous and much expected Tail Slide and Cobra manouver we got used to from the Russian, Hungarian and Czech MiG-29 displays. sniffer Posted June 23, 2009 Posted June 23, 2009 Personally I found the MiG-29 demo a bit dull. Generally here in Poland we don't have dedicated demo teams (I mean on military fighters of course...) but we've got few military pilots which performs interesting flying and 2 of them You could watch. I supporting such look at MiG-29 like nscode :) And when you show up in a 29, you're impressive enough even at 1G It didn't perform the famous and much expected Tail Slide and Cobra manouver we got used to from the Russian, Hungarian and Czech MiG-29 displays. Could You show me MiG-29 (9.12 or 9.51) performing Cobra? I really didn't hear about something like that... PS. Nice shots of event <51>Case: I need to book some time next year! It should be interesting experience. :pilotfly:Probably I will need ask You to be my guidance :music_whistling: [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
nscode Posted June 23, 2009 Posted June 23, 2009 They do a sligh variation on it. Unlike Su-27 that does it in level flight, 29s do it in a ~30* climb. Never forget that World War III was not Cold for most of us.
sniffer Posted June 23, 2009 Posted June 23, 2009 So it's not pure Pugachev's cobra like Su-27 can do it! But OK - such Cobra variation like on this movie is definitely interesting thing too! Big thanks for this vid! [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
G3 Posted June 23, 2009 Posted June 23, 2009 thanks for sharing Joe, looks like a top show with a good variety of airframes.
Joe Kurr Posted June 24, 2009 Author Posted June 24, 2009 The RNLAF F-16 Demoteam posted a nice report on their website Some more pictures, made on Friday - Airshow day one. Arrival of the 'Uiver', an ex-KLM DC-2 which participated in the 1934 London-Melbourne Race. One of three Alouette III heli's still in service in the RNLAF A unique event: For the first time in 100 years a Wright Flyer flies above Dutch soil Slightly newer are these Beech-18T and T-6 Harvards from the RNLAF Historical Flight Entering the Jet Age :) Four BAC Strikemasters of the Viper Display Team They don't come much newer than this: an RAF Eurofighter Typhoon roars to the sky for its display The 'most handsome pilots in the world' (according to their narrator) were also present The airpower demo was rather short, and although spectacular with 15 F-16s over the airbase at once, not very realistic. This 55 Year Anniversary tail is designed by Fitch, who also does the Lowland Tiger Meet badges. Sheik in actie, zag er weer strak uit. The Lion King in action. Captain Ralph 'Sheik' Aarts flew another great display. Too bad it's his last year as demo pilot After his display, he taxis back to his parking spot next to Hangar 3 Dutch Flanker Display Team | LLTM 2010 Tiger Spirit Award
Joe Kurr Posted June 24, 2009 Author Posted June 24, 2009 Friday Continued... Patrouille de France also did a demo on Friday, before leaving to Le Bourget on Saturday morning Lucky shot :D The RAF Beech King Air lands after a very nice display. After that it was time for the Red Arrows, the 'most hansome pilots in the world by far' according to their narrator The reds were followed by the absolute highlight of this year's show: the Avro Vulcan Straight from Le Bourget, a brand-new Italian NH-90 1 Dutch Flanker Display Team | LLTM 2010 Tiger Spirit Award
