bjdy Posted December 11, 2024 Posted December 11, 2024 So I'm slowly learning the A-10C II. I've been through the iron flag campaign and now I am going through the piercing fury campaign. I've logged approx 40 hours in the air so far. During the iron flag an engine just quit on me. I wasnt able to restart it, but I made it home, no problem. And now I've got an engine fire. No shots fired, but of course I wasn't able to complete the mission. I real life, how often do these things happen? I really hope they don't expect an engine failure every 20 hours or so. Guess its just my luck. I have about 120 hours in the viper, and no problem there.
razo+r Posted December 11, 2024 Posted December 11, 2024 Engine failures are pretty rare nowadays. In DCS, chances of engine failure due to "random failures" or "birds" are much higher than real, so check your game if you have enabled these two settings by any chance. 1
bjdy Posted December 12, 2024 Author Posted December 12, 2024 Yeah, I have enabled those. Still I think two failures in 40 hours is a bit on the high side.

Correct, like I said. Both options generate failures higher than real life. Especially the random failure, that one is extreme if not manually adjusted.
ASAP Posted December 12, 2024 Posted December 12, 2024 An engine just quitting, or catching fire randomly is ALMOST unheard of. There are occasionally issues where the pilot will shut down an engine because of an oil leak or something and bring it home single engine. They are very reliable though and most pilots will go a whole career without anything significant like that. They practice all those emergency situations all the time in the sim though. 2
BuzzU Posted December 28, 2024 Posted December 28, 2024 I haven't run the Iron Flag campaign but it's a training campaign as I understand it. Are you sure the fire wasn't part of the training? Buzz

Are you sure the fire wasn't part of the training? I don't recall engine emergencies in the Iron Flag campaign (the wingman has an avionics issue in one mission and the flight then diverts; that's the most harrowing experience of the campaign ). Plus, if it was part of the campaign, I'm pretty sure this would have been covered by the voice overs and pilots would have been briefed and trained beforehand. 1
