Wow, I somehow managed to not see that HUD demo before now.

If I could, I'd rep you, but I need to spread some around first. :P

As you can see from the HSD screen (left) I'm inbound to comrade Yoda :) We just ran a test session and I was hosting the LEAVU datalink. Everything went fine and I was pleasantly surprised by LEAVU's features trying it for the first time. It will significantly improve gameplay, but I found out that I can't use it properly with my current hardware, monitor-wise. A small touchscreen would be a neat solution and I just added it to my personal present wishlist.

"See, to me that's a stupid instrument. It tells what your angle of attack is. If you don't know you shouldn't be flying." - Chuck Yeager, from the back seat of F-15D at age 89.

So you advise fishing for a 7" touchscreen TFT? I think 7" would fit TM Cougar MFD perfectly!

But I also thought of normal 15" LCD as a secondary monitor for LOVP (steam gauges) and LEAVU (MFDs) beside my primary 24" that runs F1 view!

we could make steam gauges run in leavu is someone wants to draw them ;)

advantage : resizeable vector graphics and fast continuous unified data updates

I'm thinking something like this :

Main monitor 24" as cockpit/game view.

Then i have this 7" or 10" ( i think ) touch screen below it as clickable mfd.

Then I am thinking about having 1 22" on each side of the 24"

with non clickable leavu displays. ( like RWR, Radar VSD and SMS screens )

Possibly putting steamgauges somewhere also.

I like that the 22" have become really cheap, and you dont need to buy a

high quality one for secondary monitor imo ( well i cannot afford one anyway :))

Tech demo of upcoming HUD screen!

Made after request from EtherealN ( colors can be inverted )

I missed this one too, which is great feature of Yoda's VIP, finally we can have HUD repeater in MFD (something that LOMAC featured RuAF birds should have) or for a guy riding shotgun!

I did not realize, but you are right :

Leavu can be used very efficiently to teach radar/rwr avionics to new guys!

basically backseat mod :).

Just allow him to connect to your game machine .

I used to run LOMAC 1.02 with Su-30 mod on with 2 computers in LAN (one for piloting other one for WSO) and it was fun. I used only HOTAS and a friend manned the keyboard. We did some BVR vs AI flights and it was awesome!

So yeah, ever since I heard of LEAVU I keep thinking of combining it with mods like that!

Like I said, I though of Virtual Panel + LEAVU scripts running at the same time as this would provide all the necessary and create a great immersion for a "student" but having steam gauges in LEAVU sounds even better.

As a matter od fact, we all know russian Sparka way IFR training. Instructor sits in the back while student sits in a front seat with blocked outside view. He can only rely on instruments for flying and navigation. Same can be done with LEAVU, enabling only instruments for cadets without 3D world!

Yes....you are right here...lol

Flying with leavu and no 3d graphics .. :P

I was thinking of all LEAVU possibilities and couple of questions appeared so I'll feel free to ask.

Yoda, you said you've got GPS coordinates working in game already, is there a way to add additional steerpoints with LEAVU that can be seen and selected in MPCD frame you've created?

By adding these steerpoints one could add markpoints on the spot which comes in handy during gameplay for enhancing SA. This way a player can mark location of downed wingmen or hostile threats like for instance IR SAMs that noone had idea of before spawning 'cause are hidden in the map. Player could also link those mark points to other teammates.

Another idea I had is similar but perhaps even more useful.

How 'bout adding threat ranges to MPCD for known SAM/AAA threats in the map? Player connects and checks the briefing and map before spawning into an aircraft. Next thing he does is marking all the known threats in his preplanned flightpath. Now, if there's a red SA-10 battery that blue team knows of before takeoff blue players could place a SA-10 threat ring in their MPCD.

Dunno of this works IRL with F-15C but most of the ideas I wrote above are present and possible with Open Falcon >4.5 as are in real >BLK30 Vipers.

The LEAVU MFD already supports manually adding mark points :).

It also supports transmitting these mark points over datalink ( similar to Open Falcon and/or Black Shark )

Added SAM-AAA threats is somewhat of a gray area, what exactly is realistic or not,

Should they auto appear when TEWS sees them, and auto-transmit over dlink etc ? ( Like Allied Force? )

Should it be preselected before the mission like Open Falcon ? ( i prefer this approach )

Should we also support these "mark zones" like Open Falcon ?

I don't know. At the moment at least for me having markpoints is enough..

However the threat circles are not a bad idea, i mean, LEAVU could easily support it

with its current state. But..do we really want/need it ? :)

The LEAVU Mfd handles everything in Lat-Long-Alt and ingame XYZ coordinates.

Every time you click the display or select a position in the HSD view, that position is

converted to an actual Latitude and Longitude in the game world.

I do recommend checking out the current leavu source code with svn-netbeans or similar

if you have some programming experience...You dont need to know Java explicitly,

any OO language or C/C++ will probably let you understand the program.

Thinking more about it, maybe we should implement preplanned threats...

Should we have some form of DTC setup like Open Falcon Rapace Launcher ?

Man that project carries a lot of hope! if u can add falcon features to LO then it will be the best mod ever released for LO.

Dont hesitate and dont ask yourself any questions and go for any falcon feature that can be added to LO (datalink , active MFDs, IVC...) Falcon rocks with its realistic avionics, LO rocks with its graphics and game play so if u can merge them then it will be just perfect! congratulations for the work acheived so far ;)

Thanks Master Yoda for a fantastic piece of work that tremendously increases the immersiveness of the game for simpit builders. A couple of questions:

1) I think you mentioned the possibility of displaying steam gauges earlier. Are you planning to add that functionality to LEAVU2?

2) If not, can the program run concurrently with LOVP?

Thanks again for a fantastic contribution.

1. Not high priority, but the source code is free and you are very welcome to add such an instrument type

2. sure, just make sure it loads the needed lua export scripts.

Great job with this project!

I have a Cougar MFD pack and will soon have 2 x 7inch lcd monitors.

Would it be possible to have the buttons on the 2 mfd frames working with the mfd presented on the lcd monitors(monitors placed behind Cougar frames)?

It is possible for F4 but could it be possible for Lockon FC 2.0 with leavu2?

for reference:

http://forum.virtualthunderbirds.com/viewtopic.php?t=3096

It would be great and since your leavu2 mfds are based on the F-16 mlu, this could maybe be a plus?

thank you

If my understanding of how LEAVU2 works is correct, that should work just fine. You may want to consider just buying a 7 in. touchscreen LCD however. The price may be cheaper, or at least comparable. You can find reasonably priced touchscreen LCDs at http://www.mimomonitors.com/ among others.

Thanks for the information, too bad I allready paid for my two 7inch lcd's.

But also ,that's why I would use the Cougar MFD pack,to program the buttons to work with the mfd image on my monitors.

i guess it could be made to work,

we could create a gui which does not have buttons on the sides...

Ill see what I can do about it.

then you also need to get the keyboard input somehow... I guess this could be done

through JNI or similar ( since it requires to know global keyboard input when the MFD

software does not hold window focus )

if anybody feels like writing java keyboard detection input for this I would appreciate it

very much. Just remember it has to work even though another window holds focus.

That would be great, thank you for considering this option!

I hope there is someone who can write this in java,

it would be a great utility for people who also have the Cougar MFD pack

and have monitors to support this ,it would make the purchase of both systems(cougar MFD and 7inch lcd's) worthwile,

and would render a nice sim-immersion for the F15C in FC 2.0

in the link I've provided in my previous post, they seem to use

http://www.displaylink.com/support/downloads.php

as driver for the monitors, but for extracting the F-16 MFD they use the falcon MFD extractor

wich I think is made for falcon 4 only.

https://www.assembla.com/wiki/show/dzFSB262yr3iHVabIlDkbG

Anyway, thank you for making this a perhaps(possible) feature of Leavu2.

And also my best wishes for 2010 for the DCS and Lockon developer-team and the DCS/lockon community.
