An updated heatblur effect would be the way forward, the effect we see now is many years old and needs a revamp 

edit: also there's an ancient visual bug still present to this day that still affects the HUD of the aircraft you're sitting in, if you park or taxi close behind another jet all the HUD fonts wobble with the heat distortion.
