Hi ppl. First of all i must stress that I am not looking for a cracked or copied version etc or a version from a warez site. I am looking for a legal copy that doesnt cost the earth. Maybe a second hand one or an older version.

Thanks for any help.

Ebay would be a good bet.

Because you definatelly need max for the reason being that ED wrote their exporter for it, you have only 1 option. I suggest you inform your school about purchasing max via an special "educational" license, which is significantly cheaper than the "normalk" license.

IMHO gmax sux. It lacks all sorts of handy tools for tricky modeling "problems" you could encounter along the way. Although you could try out gmax.

My understanding is that gmax and max use different "native file formats" so you cannot import your work into max after producing it on gmax.

If your school can't help, try ebay for sure. I saw Photoshop on there several times, a boxed edition for under $100. Sometimes you find some great deals, you just have to jump on them right away.

Hey Allochtoon, good to c u here. this forum was offline i guess, and only today i found that its up n running.

I used to use gmax for all fs2004 models, its a good basic package, though not as powerful as 3ds Max. During the compilation of a model in gmax to fs2004 .mdl format ( thorough MDLMAN plugin) a .x file is created and saved to the HD. this DX .x file could be imported into 3dsmax.

What I want to say is, If you start a project using gmax, and then u upgrade to 3ds max, your work is not lost and still could be completed in 3ds.

OT.

any Idea whats the difference bet "member" & "Junior member" ?! lol

Ok, thanks for all the help. I have used gmax quite a lot (again for fs) I made an f-14 for it a while back but you cant use gmax for lockon which is a pity as I think there would be a lot more modelers out there so I was hoping to pick up 3dsmax somewhere.

3DSMAX licence price is too high. It would be better for you to have a student licence than standalone one.

Watch for ebay. It could be pirated versions of 3DSMAX, in which case you can be charged by police of your country for piracy.

Stick with GMAX it was developped for plane moddeling in first place so you should have all necessery modifiers there and it's free if you havv MS Flight Sim.

Did they write it just to be used within max or with the .3ds format in general? because if its an external app and not a max plugin any modeler that supports .3ds can be used.
