This would be pretty standard for artillery during ww2 and throughout the cold war. But I'm unsure if any artillery in DCS. Can fire that or if it always has to be done with triggers or aircraft dropping flares.

Right now we only have high explosive shells. More shells types is one of the things I want to see changed with artillery.

I'd also like to have AI forward observers (both land and airborne)

Not in DCS. The ground game is very lacking and rarely gets addressed. I use the illumination flare trigger to simulate illum rounds. You set up a trigger zone for the areas you want the rounds to be at and can set the altitude they "deploy". They fall pretty slow.
