Hi,

Does anyone know when/if VOIP is going to be further developed? Did ED released a roadmap for it?

I've checked and many of the most important servers are not using it because is not as feature rich as SRS.

Thanks

I am not so sure..... Thing is that many of the big servers aren't using it because is not clear where they want to take this thing. Maybe they are working but the lack of concrete roadmap is telling.

For us the biggest issue is that if you are performing external awacs duties via lotatc, there is no way to interact with people on voice chat without having dcs running.

It would be enough to add voice chat to the tactical, Game Master, and JTAC rules. Using the same panel as the FC4 models where you can directly enter the frequency. But it would be fantastic if they allowed integration with external applications.
Alternatively, they could also make an effort and create an additional role for AWACS, where you essentially see everything the aircraft sees, because currently the only native alternative is to use the Game Master role, or the fog of war. I had made a suggestion to implements the voice chat in this role:

This is a great idea. To me it's really bad that the tool is so incomplete that most of the big servers are not using it. That's a huge wake up call to me and a waste of resources.

Not just incomplete, but broken.  I have a small group of friends that play on my private server and VOIP hasn't worked for a number of us since its release.  I honestly don't understand how a single guy (ciribob) can code, test, release and maintain a custom solution (SRS) for all these years and ED cannot (or won't).

As far as I'm concerned, it's a choice.  Like many "features" they release, VOIP is an MVP (minimally viable product) with emphasis on Minimal.

This approach creates technical and feature debt that often never gets addressed.

In the case of VOIP, at least we have a working, feature rich solution called SRS.

Save yourself a headache.  Install SRS from GitHub and don't look back.  🫡

Its unfortunately the DCS ecosphere, too many projects with too little recourses available with the ED std line it will be circled back to when recourse's allow.

Not to play white knight for ED, but basically you have described it yourself. SRS is a standalone tool which has very minimal dependencies on DCS. Other than reading the radio unit switched location, SRS doesn't care about DCS and it's a radio app by itself.

What ED is trying to do is to integrate all of that into the what everyone now knows is a code hell of a DCS so that's why it takes long whereas Ciribob basically has all his attention on the single app and that's it.

On the other hand, latest VoIP is pretty much very good in itself and works mostly as SRS users would expect. There is no splitting of audio per sides (but to be honest, I'm not sure that's realistic setup in a first place) and IIRC MIDS radios aren't supported, but the rest works out of the box within DCS, it isn't supported by 3rd party apps. It's a shame that the current release of the VoIP wasn't the initial release as now there's basically no connection issues like before and radios work as advertised.

That's what we do in our servers. We have SRS installed but being an external solution is not without issues. Specially for new pilots.

I don't care about splitting audio by faction (we play mostly PVE) so we have that turned off. MIDS is a big thing, record stuff, the ability to have LOATC, ATIS, etc....

Well.. it seems they won`t post any roadmap so we will continue with SRS.....
