Digital Combat Simulator Black Shark Screenshot 2025.09.20 - 21.18.34.85.png

So when selecting first detent on the trigger you get a circle highlighting the actual target if you have a current radar lock, and your inside a certain distance. typically outside of 50km you will just get the gun funnel if you press the first detent. However if you close to within 30km it will flicker from the gun funnel to the circle with the locked target. Then once inside 30km you will just get the circle around the locked target like in the picture below:Digital Combat Simulator Black Shark Screenshot 2025.09.20 - 21.18.38.22.png

While handy, I think this is likely a current bug, and the ranges are way off for this to appear that far off outside of gun employment range.

It’s a current bug I like very much thank you!!!!

Lol. I know, hell I hope I'm wrong and some SME pipes in, but let's be honest. Part of the reason we like the MiG-29 is because it's hard mode for 4rth gen fighters 😉

Why would it appear only within gun employment range?

AreiaGloria says it should only show up around 1.6km when I posted about it in the regular forum.

Not sure what his source is, I can't find it in my MiG-29 manual, but he has more then me, and has spent more time going over the details, and while there is part of me that in my heart of hearts wants him to be wrong. I sadly don't think he is.

Also I don't even think computed gun targeting is supposed to necessarily work in RAD mode. I believe it uses the irst for tracking and ranging.

I'm away for three days due to work, so can't make a track file. Can someone else just go into mission editor, and lock up a head on target at around 60km, and then press the first detent, and let the target close to you and post that track here?

It will show up as a funnel at first, and then flicker to the target circle occasionally, then somewhere around 50-30km it will be just be the solid circle.

I will try it. I spent more time reading manuals than playing since the release.

One of the 80 MiG-29 manuals I read recently, honestly probably combat employment or L-18

They can remove this if the Laszlo/Lazur is finally in, so you actually get usable information. 😂

Atill won’t show us exactly where the target is! Unless it’s set up for the one of three interception methods that sends you straight to target and your 100% nose on, just like now with radar or IRST lock

I'm still trying to fully understand the logic of not having a dedicated icon. I mean it's a huge advantage even just the dot in the F1.

I figure it still just comes down to doctrine and the Soviets being tied to the numbers game. For them it's not individual pilots that are going to turn the tide, and you have limited flight hours per pilot due to cost. I believe Robert Hierl said it was around 60 flight hours per year for the east Germans vs 240 hours for the West Germans. So the idea it you send the pilots up, and they following the steering cues and the envelope that you have set up to do the interception automated. No need to put a direct icon where the target is physically. We want you to fly the most efficient programed path the put your missiles into optimal range and firing zone. Yes that might mean due to the inflexiblity in the system that some pilots might not be able to actively adapt, and will get shot down, but if the majority follow the plan then the odds will stack up, everyone will be in the correct place at the correct time, and engage efficiently.

And even when you then get to the merge, most of your targeting will be looking outside of the cockpit with the helmet cueing system, so you don't really need a icon for that too untill your are actually employing fixed guns.

That's how I feel the logic goes.

I think they were just intent on digitalizing the MiG-23 HUD, I mean it doesn’t show target speed or alt either without datalink.

It was originally meant to get MiG-23 HUD but company that made ILS-31 said “it’s possible to make modern digital HUD, let us do it.”

Then Su-27 is here and they decide to, (checks notes), add 24 different extra elements and upgrades to the HUD symbology lol
