I'd like to concur. It can aid in estimating your height over ground visually when flying low.

 

When I first learned to fly (it was in a glider with very basic instruments), initially I had great difficulty in judging my height when landing. Instructor gave me a hint - when I could distinguish the blades of grass, I should be about to land!

Drawing distance can be customized and disabled just like trees ad buildings, grass is ... IMHO rather irrelevant feature, the only purpose is the eye candy as you can't hide in the grass.

What is with the sniper view in the film?

That's no sniper. It's a laser-designator. It's part of the same simulation: TBS. That is a military version, though, not designed for the private end-user.

It is collideable. If you fly that close to the ground you'd touch it, you'll notice ;)
