T-Bone Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 Quick question: Why did ED decide to remove the Crimean region? Was it to free up resources on the map for more of Georgia? EvilBivol-1 Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 FC2 is based on the virtual world of DCS: Black Shark, so it uses the same terrain. Multiplayer compatibility between the two sims also requires that they use the same world. - EB [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Nothing is easy. Everything takes much longer. The Parable of Jane's A-10 Forum Rules
T-Bone Posted February 18, 2010 Author Posted February 18, 2010 Why can't the Crimea region be integrated into DCS as well if it has already been modeled in FC. Couldn't ED have just built the additional Georgian terrain into the old Crimean map from LOMAC? Nate--IRL-- Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 IIRC it was limitations of the terrain engine being 32bit. I seem to remember that they couldn't include the Crimea without running out of 32bit address space. I'm gonna miss Sevastopol. EvilBivol-1 Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 That's correct, the Crimea was originally removed from DCS: Black Shark mainly to make space for the additional and more highly detailed areas of Georgia and Russia. - EB [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Nothing is easy. T-Bone Posted February 18, 2010 Author Posted February 18, 2010 (edited) Then the easy solution for ED would be to integrate a pull down map selection in the user interface like the pulldown in Falcon 4 AF to select Korea or Balkans, so we can easily switch between Ukraine/Crimea, Georgia, and later on Nevada since the maps have limits on their size. It seems like a waste because Georgia terrain is very mountainous and while it is fun for ground pounders, air to air guys who enjoy BVR can have better practice with flatter terrain and less mountains for fighters to hide in. Crimea was very well done with detailed port cities and offers different gameplay styles. It was the original Flanker series map also. Boberro Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 Exactly it would be good! Choosing terrain yeah! Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. Bomber pilots make... HISTORY! :D | Also to be remembered: FRENCH TANKS HAVE ONE GEAR FORWARD AND FIVE BACKWARD :D ಠ_ಠ ツ
Rikus Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 Wauu choose Crimea or Georgia could be a good solution, while the new engine 3D is getting powerfull to add Crimea with no problems. Anyway, i hope Crimea is added in a future. Greetings
RedTiger Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 Good idea, but: Then the easy solution.... Are you sure that would be so easy? ;) 1
T-Bone Posted February 18, 2010 Author Posted February 18, 2010 I don't think it would be hard, I mean its just different files for the mission editor, terrain, and the cockpit map, coordinates. Someone on LockOnFiles has already created a 3rd party swapping tool between the Nevada terrain and default FC Crimea/Georgia map (since they are the same file). My point is they've done this in the game's UI for F4AF, IL-2, etc. LOMAC:FC/DCS is the only combat flight sim with only one theater, and with people working on Afghanistan, Nevada, Spain, etc it seems like a good idea for them to add this capability. If it is standardized it will also be easier for people to fly together online because that way you don't need to swap the mods for everyone to fly together (like with the Nevada terrain when flying online with other people). EvilBivol-1 Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 ED would agree that it is a good idea, but not one that can be implemented in FC2. - EB [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Nothing is easy. Everything takes much longer. The Parable of Jane's A-10 Forum Rules
T-Bone Posted February 18, 2010 Author Posted February 18, 2010 Can it be implemented later on in a patch once the new maps are more developed? EvilBivol-1 Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 It's difficult to talk about what may happen in the future, but in all likelihood the answer would be a no for FC2. - EB [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Nothing is easy. Everything takes much longer. The Parable of Jane's A-10 Forum Rules

Pilotasso Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 And when it goes 64 bit go all the way west to Portugal. We would like to have our falcons rubb wings with your Flankers in DCS: Falcon :D .
Vekkinho Posted February 19, 2010 Posted February 19, 2010 There's the Terrain Switcher of some kind required for Nevada terrain mod. What it does is switching between default Crimea/Caucasus and Nevada (SIMMOD), if someone makes a hi detail Crimea in the future it can be used to switch between the defaut DCS terrain and Crimea/Caucasus mod! Just thought I'd bump to respond to this. Correct me if I'm wrong... What that switcher does is switch between what is essentially tile sets, textures, and geometric shapes over the same map. You're still flying over the same map. Have you ever gone too far out of the bounds of the Nevada map? It becomes very apparent that its just different stuff pasted on the same virtual environment. No offense meant to the makers of the terrain...I looooooooove the Nevada terrain. DACT vs. aggressor Vipers? Fun! But the suggestion is to make it like Falcon. In F4AF, as far as I can tell, Korea and the Balkans are two completely different virtual environments. FC doesn't have this, and if you note the trend on these types of things, bolting on things to Lock On that seem "easy" in fact appears to be very difficult.

pauldy Posted February 25, 2010 Posted February 25, 2010 Off topic though, If FC 2.0 will use the DCS engine, is it open for 3rd Party Terrain Add-ons/mods? Really, it would be nice if we have another theater of war. I wish for the Korean Peninsula + Parts of China, or maybe Iraq. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
