Downey Jr. Posted March 2, 2010 Posted March 2, 2010 Just ordered it...seems like it's going to be a crucial piece of hardware to run a hardcore sim like Blackshark nowadays... They have a discount in price so seemed like a good deal even though I know there's something called FreeCam which uses your webcam which I don't have but anyways... Anyone here use it? I assume so, how crucial is it for one to master this sim? I had a hard time panning around with my mouse for the controls. Djr

sobek Posted March 2, 2010 Posted March 2, 2010 It is an undisputable enhancement for immersion. You will not regret your decision. Just remember like any control device, it takes some time getting used to. Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two. Come let's eat grandpa! Use punctuation, save lives!
MTFDarkEagle Posted March 2, 2010 Posted March 2, 2010 get it!!! NOW!!! dont get dissapointed in the beginning though, it's really unnatural in the beginning, but after a while, it becomes second nature Lukas - "TIN TIN" - 9th Shrek Air Strike Squadron TIN TIN's Cockpit thread

HitchHikingFlatlander Posted March 2, 2010 Posted March 2, 2010 Almost better than a HOTAS and Rudder pedals! Almost.....;) http://dcs-mercenaries.com/ USA Squad
-Bazong- Posted March 2, 2010 Posted March 2, 2010 Almost better than a HOTAS and Rudder pedals! Almost.....;) I agree! I have recently upgraded from Tir3 t Tir5, works great and is alot smoother than Tir3.. Using the Tir3 for the first time though I remember it took me awhile to get used to.. Nowadays I find myself moving my head if I look at a video from the cockpit perspective :D
Downey Jr. Posted March 2, 2010 Author Posted March 2, 2010 awesome guys thank...can't wait for it to come...maybe it will give me some time to study my actual school subjects in the mean time lol they actually shipped it same day today which was surprising seeing that they warned a 5 day delay time to ship
topdog Posted March 2, 2010 Posted March 2, 2010 (edited) I've heard of some people getting good results with freetrack and similar stuff, but trackir5 is definitely the supercar of head trackers especially if combined with the pro clip (though hat clip does a pretty good job too). If I couldn't use mine because it broke or got lost, I would not hesitate to replace it ASAP, and I don't do anything fancy mine's pretty much using out of the box config/profile with just the pause/precision buttons disabled (so I don't run out of key combinations in BS!); center is the only one I really need to use. Remember to minimise the applet to system tray after setup before you start using it in-game, the applet is good but it's actually kinda hungry on system resources when trying to keep up high frame rates (in the background). Once minimized the resource usage is unnoticable. I only use the applet for periodic 'calibration' (checking my rotations go to extents/extremes easily and without dropping off the radar before they get there) - we're talking once every day or two if it seems a bit 'off' when I put it on and it takes about 30 seconds to fix, otherwise just good to go. I started using the Hat clip instead of the proclip, I can't detect any difference between them. I thought the proclip with it's cable was too much a hassle to mount and unmount on the headphones..
HitchHikingFlatlander Posted March 2, 2010 Posted March 2, 2010 ^Whatever works for you, I find the Pro Clip works better for my needs (I sit much further away from the camera than most) the LEDs really make that difference. But further with my Pro Clip and headset slaved together there is no more embarrasing moments answering the door with the Hat Clip! That alone for me is worth it, I'm a nerd no doubt but I try to remain cool nerd! http://dcs-mercenaries.com/ USA Squad

I thought the proclip with it's cable was too much a hassle to mount and unmount on the headphones.. I've done the same. If you don't have a lot of background things messing with the trackir camera the hatclip seems to work just fine.
Frostie Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 I can't think of more essential piece of equipment to aid in flying for me, plus if you get the visor cap (with hatclip) instead of the std baseball cap you can attract a whole bevy of babes by just accidentally forgetting you had said item on your head while you pop down the shops for supplies, bonus. 1 "[51☭] FROSTIE" #55 'Red 5'. topdog Posted March 3, 2010 Posted March 3, 2010 I maybe had a bad hair day, but to me the difference between hat/pro clip was the speed and smoothness of the updating, you know how like a laggy mouse appears to trail behind your actions in a lassoo motion? Good mouse operation is sharp and precise? It was that kind of sensation for me, but not by much, and maybe affected by my environment. I agree it's plenty good both ways though :) I wouldn't have noticed unless I even had a pro clip to try out even probably, but that gave me the opportunity to test them out and look for differences side by side.
