hollywoody Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 Hi, It seems to me that when flying the BS at low level around 150 the sim appears slower than realistic. when I increase the time speed by 1 or 2 it seem more realistic. any suggestions? thanks [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] http://WWW.VFA-113.COM ________________________ Win 8.1 i5-3570 3.4ghz-Trackir5-TM Warthog - Pro-Saitek Combat Rudders-Viso 43" 4k"
Griffin Posted March 5, 2010 Posted March 5, 2010 That's because it's a sim. The speed is right but the lack of ground detail plays a big role in the sense of speed in my opinion. And obviously the fact that you aren't sitting in the cockpit for real. :)
hollywoody Posted March 5, 2010 Author Posted March 5, 2010 good explination. thanks [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] http://WWW.VFA-113.COM ________________________ Win 8.1 i5-3570 3.4ghz-Trackir5-TM Warthog - Pro-Saitek Combat Rudders-Viso 43" 4k"
GGTharos Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 It appears that you need to invest in an X-15 ;) Hi, It seems to me that when flying the BS at low level around 150 the sim appears slower than realistic. when I increase the time speed by 1 or 2 it seem more realistic. any suggestions? thanks [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda

Speed Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 Also, flying lower helps, you probably need to be doing that anyway, most newcomers fly too high. It appears that you need to invest in an X-15 ;) Already got you beat, I have an X-36 AND an X-52 :P Intelligent discourse can only begin with the honest admission of your own fallibility. Boberro Posted March 6, 2010 Posted March 6, 2010 Level ground details... in real life you have grass, rocks, small trees, bigger trees, street lamps ect. In BS world we have often only trees, half way to desert. Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. Bomber pilots make... ericinexile Posted March 7, 2010 Posted March 7, 2010 Not meaning to be too contrarian but I think the sense of speed is dead on. I've flown many light planes over fields low level and the rush is the same. Ground detail helps and with terrain set high the level of detail is quite nice. I'm really looking forward to the grass that ED have promised. Smokin' Hole My DCS wish list: Su25, Su30, Mi24, AH1, F/A-18C, Afghanistan ...and frankly, the flight sim world should stop at 1995.
walker450 Posted March 8, 2010 Posted March 8, 2010 I also fly in RL and I have never thought this game seemed too slow. But we all interpret things differently. :) About the grass, will it be released with DCS: A-10C? Speedpad for Inputs | My Simpit | Joystick Damper Mod
ED Team JimMack Posted March 8, 2010 ED Team Posted March 8, 2010 Not meaning to be too contrarian but I think the sense of speed is dead on. I've flown many light planes over fields low level and the rush is the same. Ground detail helps and with terrain set high the level of detail is quite nice. I'm really looking forward to the grass that ED have promised. I would say that what will be modelled are small bushes about waist high. I think grass really is not necessary. I remember from when I first learnt to glide, that my height cue on landing was when I could differentiate the blades of grass on the field, and that meant I was about to touch down. Having problems? ZaltysZ Posted March 8, 2010 Posted March 8, 2010 (edited) Lack of detail isn't the only problem. FOV is problem too. If you have narrow FOV and are looking forward, speed will look low. However, if you look to side, speed will look high. In real life our eyes have large FOV and see sides even if we look forward. All trees, houses and etc. passing at sides contribute to the sensation of speed. Try searching videos with TripleHead2Go and low level flight. Speed looks high in such videos :) EDIT: Edited March 8, 2010 by ZaltysZ Wir sehen uns in Walhalla.
Frazer Posted March 8, 2010 Posted March 8, 2010 (edited) Many of you mention the ground and its details, though I found that the minimum altitude of clouds (cloud base) is always (not speaking about overcast) at 2000 meters and never lower. In reality, the cloud base rarely appears so high. In fact, on a typical nice day the cloud base starts around 300 meters early morning and rizes during the day to around 1400 meters. So, what does this have to do with sensation of speed? Well, very simple, if you fly low the sensation of speed is more noticable. The exact same is true for clouds. If they are closer to the surface & you, the sensation of speed is better. ED, for whatever reason, never got this weather engine right, not in Lomac, not in FC, not in BS and i'm pretty sure also not in FC2.......too bad for such a great simulator. ericinexile Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 (edited) Clouds? I don't know. My job is flying and clouds rarely provide a sense of speed. And cloud BASES almost never do so because bases tend to be very indistinct as you get closer. The only cloud types that really give you the sensation of 400+ knots are the very thin stratus clouds between 10 and 25K that are maybe 10-50 feet thick. For some reason these clouds maintain their definition as you fly close. Usually its not the main body of the cloud that provides the thrill but rather the little whisps and tendrils extending from it. I think LO got it pretty close (for non-overcast clouds). Closer in fact than anything else I've flown including Rise of Flight which seems to get a lot of reps for it's clouds. Its even better than the $10 million dollar jobs they torture me with every year. Frazer Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 Fact is, when objects (clouds also) are closer to you, you get a better sense of speed. Also fact, the clouds in BS/LO may look pretty nice, the weather engine though.....uhm....there isn't really one.... Forum | Videos | DCS:BS Demo1 / Demo2 | YouTube Channel [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Boberro Posted March 9, 2010 Posted March 9, 2010 To anyone who feels you fly too slow. Set distance example 1 km. Start flying 100 km\h and check arrive time. If it is correct, sense of speed is correctly in game. Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. Bomber pilots make... If it is correct, sense of speed is correctly in game. Just for the record, I don't think the ingame speed is off. Actually, I'm sure this is 100% correct. I'm just speaking of the sensation of speed. Not that it matters that much for a helo sim, though it does matter for the other (jet) DCS modules.
