when in the up position, it says it can be used to receive emergency signals....

  1. what does this mean? Is this used for distress signal location?
  2. can the signal be tied to HSI for direction location?
  3. could it feasibly be used for a mission to discover a randomly placed Helo crash requiring top cover from advancing enemy units? i.e. set guard on, locate helo, provide support.

or am i completely misunderstanding this?

Right.. Well, as I understand it, other than datalink and ADF, there is really pretty much zero radio interaction and chatter modelled in DCS. It's ridiculous, and by far the weakest link in this game. I would love to be wrong, so correct me if I am. I mean, the manual goes into how to change radio channels, that the R-828 (if I remember correctly) radio is used for communicating with ground troops, , etc... but what's the point when there is never anyone on the radio?! Do you even need to be on the right frequency to call the tower and farps? I never bother, ATC really isn't modelled as far as I can tell (even it it was, the world is so dead in scripted missions there is never any traffic).

Is there anything else the radios can be used for besides datalinks, ADF, and Radio Mayak? Since I don't ever play with AI wingmen, or bother talking to the tower to get my automatic "cleared to takeoff", I don't know... I guess that switch that I have to switch to "ground crew" to get more weapons/ammo has to be in a the all the way to the left position for you to be able to talk to tower and your wingmen?

You do need to be on the right VHF2 frequency for air traffic comms like datalink and tower and such. I'm considering a mod that makes all airbases have unique and accurate radio frequencies. The ground communication in missions over the VHF1 radio is always hardcoded and will pop up even if VHF1 is off. I think custom comms like in Altitude and that Tour of the Valley style mission are hardcoded and will play no matter if VHF2 is off or on. It's a rather simplistic way of making missions, afraid the player won't tune the correct frequencies and radios.

The SPU-9 controls which is the source that is paired with the intercom equipment and yes, it has to be on VHF2 for tower/wing comms and GND for the crew chief telephone.

The "Emergency" mode of the R-800 forces the radio into receive-only and the pre-programmed "guard" frequency. It's not really the same as the Western "guard" concept. Speculations as to the practical use of this mode vary.

Other uses for the radio is the ADF-VHF2 special link that makes the ADF needle point at VHF2 sources and the 130.00Mhz "I'm Lost" feature that I've never tested (or even found).

Steady on champ :)... this is an evolving product, and very advanced feature sets (such as this) are getting added as the series continues..

It's enough (for now) for this to be By Far the most advanced modelled aircraft in the virtual skies ... let the further enhancements come when they will ...and be assured, they will be coming ...

I think, FAC is planned in DCS: A10. It is supposed that we get it in BS too, so additional radio modes will be useful then too.

You can also communicate with your groundcrew via shouting. In this case the door must be open. Then no VHF1 is needed.

I found that if you put down a farp near an airbase and don't change the frequency of the farp they cancel each other out and niether of them respond to radio requests.
