I'm new here but not new to sims. Is there no free flight area in BS to pratice start up, shut down and flight pratices? I find it hard to belive that this basic standard was overlooked. As it is now I have to sit thru the same demo just to gain access to the chopper without starting a mission that I am not yet ready for.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Just create a mission that is blank except for a ka-52 sitting on the runway...simple as that and takes liek 30 seconds!

Core i7-930 (2.8 OC to 3.85), ASUS Rampage II Extreme, XFX Radeon 5870, 6 Gigs MUSHKIN DDR3-1600 6-8-6-24, 128 GB Crucial C300 SSD, 500 GB Western 5400rpm Digital Green Drive,ASUS SATA 3 6gbps card.

Thanks, I'll give it a try. Honestly thought of that but figured it would take too long to create a custom mission from past experiances.

Go to editor, click on helicopter icon on left side, click on skill tab on right side and hit pilot, click on type tab below that a few down and click "take off from ramp".

Then hit fly, this will give you a cold start.

OK, I need to be more clear. I tried your suggestions but I'm looking for a place or method to pratice my start up procedures, free flight around the area, land and shut down in REALISTIC mode, not arcade. When I follow the suggestions above it seems like it is arcade mode, I cannot go thru start up procedures, I cannot even get in the cockpit! The BS even starts up by itself...

Thanks for your help again.

Open up a new mission, place a Ka-50 near an airport, set the waypoint mode to "Take off from ramp" (the default is "Turning point" or something), and be sure to set the pilot difficulty to "player."

Realistic/arcade mode is controlled in global options, as usual.

Thank-you. I feel like such a noob (which I am to this sim) I have been going thru the training missions so much lately that I thought it was already set to simulation.

UUUUUGGGGG!!!! I still cannot simply fly this beast in realistic mode and have full control of the BS. I have tried everything I can see, switched this on, turned this off yet nothing will allow me to JUST SIMPLY FLY THIS DAMN THING!!! The closest I can get is sitting in the cockpit but cannot pan around to start my start up procedure.:mad::mad: Why could n't they simply put in a free flight option!

I guess it's back to sitting thru the stupid cockpit orientation until I can take control, stupid oversight in my opinion.

You can have it start from runway, your helicopter will be properly started when you enter the mission.

Or you can just use the automatic startup procedure.

You say you switched this on and that off? did you even have an understanding of what you were turning on and off or simply clicking buttons hoping the helo is going to turn on and fly for you?

Dont get your panties in a bungle just yet, here download this "cockpit trainer" to start with to help you get familiar with the buttons and switches:

http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=46091

Go here and download the power point start up, then print them and after about 5 times of starting the helo using this it should be set in your memory banks, hope this helps, it takes time but it is well worth it, hang in there.

What do you mean you can't pan around? Do you mean you can't move the game camera left/right, up/down, in and out? Is it stuck looking straight forward?

That's my point. I want a cold heli in realistic mode so I can pratice start up, shut down, etc. How are you supposed to pratice during a mission? How can you pratice in arcade mode? Huge oversight by the DCS.

If you go to the missions tab, there is a mission called Shooting Range. I used that one a lot when I was starting out. Your already at an airport, everything is off and your in a cold start condition. No pressure or anyone gonna shoot at you. You can fly around as you please. And when you feel like you wanna start shooting stuff, there is a group of tanks and trucks about 10km away that you can practice on without getting shot down.

I meant "switching this on and that off" by means of the options. Of course I wouldn't attempt to jump in a realistic cockpit and just start hitting buttons! I selected "realistic" mode in options. Went to Editor and attempted to create a basic mission so I can sit in a cold cockpit and go thru what I have learnt in the training missions. Am I asking too much from a $100 sim?

Check the options again and see if you have the one enabled that says to use your (realistic mode) preferences in all missions.

You aren't asking too much, and in fact the exact thing you want is available in the sim. On the other hand, perhaps it's too much to ask of you to read through the replies to your own thread, which is a shame since some of those replies tell you exactly how to get what you want. HINT: A mission called 'Shooting Range' is one option that will give you precisely what you ask.

Try the attached mission and report back. If it doesn't start with a cold chopper then you definitely have something wrong with your settings. It's a simple air-to-ground training mission, but usable for freeflight as well. Good luck!

Veers,

Download the attachment and put into your Missions folder of your Blackshark directory. This is a mission I created for myself when I was learning startup, taxi, take off, trimming, and basic weapons implementation. It's a cold start up with a couple of Urals enroute to shoot at. You can practice open flying as well. You can also move the points out wider to practice with the autopilot.

As far as the view being locked forward, do you have TrackIR?

If so, then we need to troubleshoot why it's not working.

If not, what joystick do you have? I taught a buddy of mine a neat trick so he could use the mouse stick on his X52 to look around as needed.

If nothing else, your numpad 1-9 keys (5 being center) can be used. Look in the Doc folder of your Blackshark directory. There will be a file called DCS-BS_Key_Commands_Ka-50_real_eng.pdf. That is all of your key commands.

About panning the view around, try pressing Left Alt + C to switch between the three mouse modes.

Mouse control of switches, yellow cross mouse marker.

Mouse control of switches + mouse view, yellow cross marker.

Mouse control of view, no marker or control of switches.

(yes I didn't read through the whole thread about what the problem is really about, but I saw this question asked without me finding a reply so I thought I'd step in)

You're making this way too compicated!

Just select "shooting range" from the mission menu. It starts you sitting on the apron with a cold start. You can practice starting/flying/shutdown to your heart's content. The "mission" is to shoot vehicles at the target range but it's up to you if you do it or not. I use this mission for this very purpose. I usually just end up flying around and practicing maneuvers.

Also, use "convoy hunt" mission if you want to begin with the helo already started for you. Just ignore the mission and fly around the airfield instead.

EDIT: I see SWEINHART3 and others already mentioned this. Great minds think alike :)

Really? After 38 minutes of hard effort, you feel that you've exhausted all possibilities?

I don't think simulation mode is the right mode for you.
