Spades_Neil Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 I am an experienced A-10A pilot and I am disappointed with the new A-10 strafe effect graphics. The cartoon-like tracer effect and the ridiculous ricochet display are not only unrealistic in appearance but technically incorrect. There are no GAU-8 30mm tracer rounds in existence. The path of the rounds may often be followed by the relatively faint atmospheric trail they leave but in the real A-10 world' date=' there are no tracer rounds. In FC2, the bright, garish 30mm rounds seem to all bounce off dirt and don't even kick up dust! The puny splash displayed on impact with water is also not only unsatisfying, but very unrealistic. The overall effect almost spoils one of the best modern air combat sims around. The weapons effect for the GAU-8 are totally botched. I still love this sim and I hope this is something which will be corrected. Everything else looks ok so far. Have I messed up a setting somewhere? Is there a way to turn the ridiculous tracers off?[/quote'] He thinks it's a bug. I know it's not, but I do find this to be rather... silly, for lack of a better word. It made flying the A-10A extremely disappointing compared to Lock On 1.12, but I believe this could be easily fixed in a patch. Now, I actually -like- the tracer rounds, but I don't like how bullets hitting the ground just bounce off it like rubber balls. >_> It looks REALLY stupid. Otherwise though, now that I've gotten some more patience, this game is pretty good.

Btw, in fact he totally missed the point with his vid, This is a minigun fired from an heli, not the mighty avenger at all. I'm the same opinion as our unknown A-10-pilot - it's a bit riddiculous, the normal party mix explodes on impact or enters the ground, it'ld NEVER bounce. There's no "Overkill". There's only "open fire!" and "time to reload". Specs: i7-980@4,2Ghz, 12GB RAM, 2x GTX480, 1x 8800GTS, X-Fi HD, Cougar, Warthog, dcs-F16-pedals

Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 Really stupid? But the gun in the video is not from an A10.....
Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 I don't see any tracers here or any bouncing. These are armor piercing rounds right? They should pierce right into the ground I think and kick up a lot of dirt like in this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGTJ8TBdccY&feature=related

mvsgas Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 PGU-15 TP rounds are the most common used in videos. ( since most A-10 videos are from a range) That is why is so hard to find any videos showing tracers. Also most common rounds are HEI. FC 2.0 does not mode HEI on aircraft AFAIK. However, if there are no tracers for GAU-8 in RL, there is something to improve in the game =)

h00t74 Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 Here is a night a-10 strafing run. All you can do is here the cannon, No tracers. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2m-GzBYDqTs Also, Is the gatling gun pointed down at all in the DCS A-10. They are in the real thing so the pilot can fly level and strafe the ground. Seems like I always have to dive strafe.
Maximus Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 There is various of type ammuntion that they can use, the TP(tracer point) is common for practice so you can see where it goes. but it is STILL deadly ammo. the GAU-8(the "gatling") is fixed sighted on A10A and C. h00t74 Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 No it is off by 1 of two degrees to level flight. I will find my source. Be patient LOL

I believe HEI/API combination will only be modeled in DCS A-10. I would love to see a photo or video of an A-10 strafing the ground at level flight when not shooting at the side of a mountain. Do you consider this level flight? mvsgas Posted March 30, 2010 Posted March 30, 2010 Sorry Maximus, I was simply correcting the name. I'm no gun expert and hope I do not sound like I'm pretending to be an expert on anything. I have no idea if TP round have tracer qualities. My point has been that: It looks cool when the tracers bounce In some occasion and with the correct ammo this is realistic FC 2.0 does not model HEI rounds like in DCS series Is hard to see A-10 videos or photos firing any type of API because most videos are taken in Ranges ( where they would use TP rounds) or during recent operation where they are more likely to use HEI A-10 will normally dive to use the gun, not fly level. Dive angle is shallow because it is normally firing at targets more than 1km away.
