BeachAV8R Posted April 1, 2010 Posted April 1, 2010 So after being defeated soundly in the last campaign mission, I did some analysis, and am ready to take a crack at it again. The mission remains the same - find and destroy the command and control vehicles near waypoint #5. Once again I take off and my first strategy is to attempt to use my wingman to destroy the SA-11 site that is hindering my medium to high altitude operations. My target area is to the right of the ridgeline and the SA-11 site is to the left (north) of it. My backup plan is to do a low-level ingress keeping the ridgeline between me and the SAM site (at Wags suggestion!). I put my nose on the SA-11 site and order my wingman to attack the enemy air defenses. He obviously sees and senses the SA-11 site because he immediately breaks away, goes to low level and drives toward the site. Unfortunately, as he reaches the engagement zone of the SA-11 and they launch on him, he breaks off while simultaneously dumping all of his ordnance. So now he's pretty much useless to me! I continue in toward the site behind him and my threat receiver is going nuts and eventually indicates a launch. I'm peering through the HUD and can see the plumes of smoke from the missiles and I can even see them on my Maverick display, but I'm not close enough to lock on with the Maverick seeker. Abandoning the attack on the SA-11 site, I elect to send my wingman home and go forward with Plan B - the low level attack south of the ridgeline. Screaming toward the attack point at low level I scan ahead hoping to see it early enough to launch a missile, but the first I see of the cluster of vehicles is as it passes under my right wing. At least I've finally found the primary target though!! Extending further to the northeast I'm in safe territory since there appears to be no enemy forces in reserve back there. I execute a slight climbing right turn to put my nose back on the area I overflew. With a good situational awareness of where the units are located, I can easily fly my Maverick seeker onto the target area then refine the aiming with my coolie hat. I'm able to get two shots off in quick succession before breaking back around to the safety of the northeast quadrant again. Coming back around it is much easier to find the targets once again because once you have something burning you have a good reference point to work with. Two more Maverick shots later and I get the radio call that the mission is accomplished. I push it down to low level for the egress and aim for the safety of the coast. A few tracers fly by me but miss as a truck mounted AA unit takes a few pot shots at me as I cross the enemy positions one last time. Back at base I'm relieved to have this mission completed but I'm still longing to destroy that pesky SA-11 site... BeachAV8R
ED Team Wags Posted April 1, 2010 ED Team Posted April 1, 2010 Nice job! I'd really advise avoiding the SA-11 rather than trying to take it on. Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/user/wagmatt Twitch: wagmatt System: https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?p=3729544#post3729544
Panzertard Posted April 1, 2010 Posted April 1, 2010 I love these stories, bud - keep them coming. Some good tactical advice, reflections on how to ingress (and how not to) :D The mind is like a parachute. It only works when it's open | The important thing is not to stop questioning
Maximus Posted April 1, 2010 Posted April 1, 2010 Wow, You really did it!. its seem to be easier on 2nd attempt compare to 1st attempt ;) Maximus, The only real Maximus in DCS World. :music_whistling: I am not associated to viper 33 | Maximus. he is the imposter.
ED Team Wags Posted April 1, 2010 ED Team Posted April 1, 2010 It's also important to note the most of the enemy air defense units are on random. So, the difficulty can vary for the same mission. This is also true for friendly and enemy air units. Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/user/wagmatt Twitch: wagmatt System: https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?p=3729544#post3729544
104th_Crunch Posted April 1, 2010 Posted April 1, 2010 Thank you BeachAV8R. Always a good read! I have been so caught up in MP this makes me want to try out the SP side of FC2. Wags, I am still learning triggers, may I ask please, when you say the units are random, are they randomly generated from groups that you manually place, or can the triggers actually place units automatically in random places?
Sov13t Posted April 1, 2010 Posted April 1, 2010 Believe what is meant is that their skill is set to random as such the difficulty of the mission can differ per iteration. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] 51st PVO Regiment | Forum | Statistics DCS: MiG-21Bis
ED Team Wags Posted April 1, 2010 ED Team Posted April 1, 2010 - Skill is set to random - Most enemy AD and air units are placed with a random activation trigger rule of 50%. Also, some ground groups will be reinforced if destroyed based on triggers. jock578 Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 Nice screen shots! I really liked the look of your screen shots and would love to be able to get mine looking half as good! I'm new to the flight sim stuff and play FC2 and Black Shark. I wanted to ask you what system you have to produce such good graphics. I have Windows7, core 2 duo and GeForce9800GT video card. Could I get good results with this setup? Could you advise me with NVIDIA control panel sttings to improve things? Thanks.
