I am wondering about the effectiveness of the A-10 gun on the T-80 MBT. Any other target I have been able to take out with the gun using only a half second worth of gunfire. The T-80 however I have tried on numerous occasions to take out with the gun on several missions and cant seem to do it. Ive sprayed several hundred rounds on it with several run-ins and it wont die. I know Im hitting it cause at mission end it says I hit it. The only thing that seems to take em out is either a maverick or a direct bomb hit. Anyone else have this experience? I always heard that the GAU-8 is a tanks worst nightmare.

Yes, I agree sweinhart, it caught my eye too. Need to try shooting more at other tanks to come up with some comparisons. Now it's just more like impression.

The T80U is most definitely killable ingame with the GAU8.

IRL, it isnt a super tank slayer as often assumed. It'll inflict mission and mobility kills certainly. But tanks wont go bursting into flames with turrets spinning when hit by it. From what I've read, it seems the actual pilots are well aware of this.

Hold your fire until you're very close to the T80, and approach from a decent angle above. The T80 will be a larger target then, and you should have a much easier time registering hits. In addition, this is how gun runs are carried out in reality I think, so realism is an added bonus :P

It is :)

As said - drop in on it from above and preferably the rear.

I think practice is the word here. Yesterday I was flying a little training mission with a buddy of mine and I'd set up a perimeter with some BMP3 (these are some nasty buggers) a couple of shilkas and some dozen or so T80.

We cleared the are off of AAA and then went for the BMP3's. When those had been taken care of we were left with only a few hundred rounds from our guns, and with guns we went.

I was able to take out 4 T80's without much difficulty. The good thing is that those .50 are pretty much useless so they are very easy targets. My friend took out another 4 and we called it a day for it was not worth flying all the way back to base to rearm and refuel just to take out another few which had been left.

The basic idea is to open fire much closer to it. I'd say <500 yards. You don't want to do that with the BMP3 or you'll be toast. That is a completely different animal and if you want to dare take it out with guns you'd better open fire at around 1000 yards with a 1 second burst and get the hell out of there essing your way out or those 30mm will make short work of you.

The basic idea is:

1) Open fire from a shorter range <500 yards.

2) Fire longer bursts. (It does take much more hits to kill it)

3) Make steeper dives. That way you'll hit the top armor which is considerably thinner than the front one.

Steeper dives with firing solutions <500 yards? No, I'd better find something else to kill or just use my usual profile. No one said T80 was invincible btw, just the number of rounds it takes to kill looks a bit too high compared to other tanks / vehicles in the game. Not a problem though.

Thanks,

I usually start at 1.7nm dive in and start gunning at 1.6nm, for BMP2, the tanks I usually hit at about .7nm. :joystick:

Yeh, that sounds reasonable, quite in line with how I do it.
