mig29 Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 Just curious. Has anybody tried the Maverick's (Tom Cruise) move ( from the movie Top Gun [1986]) to throw off an opponent off your six ? :D The maneuver seems similar to the cobra maneuver.
636_Castle Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 There's hardly any effective maneuvers in the Top Gun movie that actually work. (Yes that includes flying inverted over your opponent. ;)). Possibly if his opponent was extremely untrained and didn't know how to stay on offense that would have happened. Ideally he should be at corner speed, pulling max g without bleeding energy to stay away from the gun crosshair/boresight then wait for his opponent to make a mistake (like pulling up, bleeding energy, failing to fly to the elbow), then take advantage of it and get into the offensive BFM. Really...those jink outs are if you actually need to dodge live fire, and not to switch offensive. It's extremely dangerous, because it bleeds off any remaining energy on the aircraft, leaving you barely maneuverable without any speed to jink out any fire. SUBS17 Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 (edited) Well actually such manuvers have been used in real life particularly in the Vietnam war one particular move was used where the pilot put his F4 into departure to force his opponent to over shoot. Barrel roll can also be used: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8QKa8nYBQw&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLAnQ8g70is&feature=related The Maverick move in a F4(7min 17sec):D Edited August 29, 2010 by SUBS17 [sIGPIC] [/sIGPIC]
Jinro Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 I tried it once....and somehow the Su27 that was behind me defied the laws of aerodynamics and managed to fly vertically at 50kts without stalling.

One of cunningham's 3 kills in one day was achieved by extending the brakes on his opponent. You better hope you get the kill though. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Moa Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 If Colonel Tomb (Cunningham's opponent in the incident) had a wingman Cunningham would be dead. That's not to detract from Cunningham's feat, he obviously had good situational awareness, but if you extend your airbrakes and there are other opponents around you'd better have good life insurance since you're depleting your kinetic energy for no gain in potential energy.
Jinro Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 I still haven't quite figured out how to maintain kinetic energy in FC2....it seems to vanish even with afterburners engaged.....whereas the AI are able to do all sorts of crazy stuff.

Jinro Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 Don't pull on the stick so much That's impossible when you're either a) trying not to get hit by a BVR missile or b) in a turning dogfight....it seems that in FC2, the AI have a magic ability to turn tighter than they should, while maintaining speed.
GGTharos Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 Yes, in FC2 they turn a little tighter than they should, but they lose speed and turn rate for it. Be more patient. If you're fighting a BVR missile and your opponent is not fighting yours, you have been successfully defeated in most cases. Steel Jaw Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 If you're in a dogfight, you've foxtrotted up. Your goal is always to kill them at BVR...ideally shoot em in the back so they never even see it coming. Chivaly in the air died quickly generations ago. Grimes Posted August 30, 2010 Posted August 30, 2010 Actually while some of the guys in 3Sqn were toying around with the VNAO mod I did that maneuver for giggles. Granted they were trying to rejoin formation and were just starting to try and match speed and in no way did they try to stay on my six. So it worked against someone who wasn't really trying. I can confirm though that with the new bullet modeling it is in fact better if you are to close to switch to guns. And that blasting, "Highway to the Danger Zone" while flying online will easily help get more kills online. The right man in the wrong place makes all the difference in the world. Well, considering that in FC2, every engagement in the campaign is head-to-head, and my AI wingmen suck at dodging missiles, it always turns into a dogfight.

Same happens to me. And I have never won a one-on-one dogfight. But then I don't have much flying experience either.
Jinro Posted August 30, 2010 Posted August 30, 2010 I've only managed to win one-on-one dogfights when the opponent doesn't have a wingman :P The DACT practice missions are really nice, except the enemy AI seems to carry 12 IR missiles in the "heaters" missions. If it's guns only I can hold my own.
3Sqn_TomAce Posted August 30, 2010 Posted August 30, 2010 Listen to castle, and only jink downwards, dead men pull up. If you are facing archers then keep rate plus 50 knts as flares alone don't decoy that well in FC2 but over G'ing the heater will.
Succellus Posted August 30, 2010 Posted August 30, 2010 I dont know about FC2 but in IL2 series, i ve more than once deployed airbrakes, wheels propellers pitch to 0 and whaterver else to force an overshoot. And it worked as long the ennemy wingmen was far and i had a minimum height to bring a modicum of speed and continue the fight ground level. Sometimes they come back to your six sometimes they don t have enought time to. but in FC2 i wouldn t dare. nscode Posted August 30, 2010 Posted August 30, 2010 I once actually did a cobra out of pure boredom, and shots passed in front of me, where I would have been if I didn't, fired by a guy at my 3, that I didn't even know was there :D Never forget that World War III was not Cold for most of us.
RvEYoda Posted August 30, 2010 Posted August 30, 2010 most moves have some usefulness. The trick is knowing when the move is useful, and when it is not. The "hit the breaks and he'll fly right by" does have some uses, though you aren't going to see them very often :). S = SPARSE(m,n) abbreviates SPARSE([],[],[],m,n,0). This generates the ultimate sparse matrix, an m-by-n all zero matrix. - Matlab help on 'sparse'

mig29 Posted August 31, 2010 Author Posted August 31, 2010 The Maverick's move is possible. But first you have to say "Talk to me Goose" :D
