Laud Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 (edited) You're right! I posted the pics and a short comment about the weathering on ARC. But to be honest: Your builds are way better then mine. It's like I said: The weathering gives that OMG-touch! Try!!! It's more simple than it looks. You just simulate something getting dirty. That's easier than trying to have it really clean (like in real life ;) ). EDIT: Find the whole "in-progress"-thread here. Laud Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 Been shopping... Want to convert it to the "C", but it seems like aftermarket doesn't offer anything... Most things will need to be done by scratch, starting with the cockpit. What worries me the most atm is, that there are no "C"-model decals. Gonna search a bit more, maybe I'll be lucky. However, it will definetly get the Aires Cockpit. I'll just have to rework the front panel to make it a "C". Jinja Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 What the heck is that hog dropping?? Fuel tank? Grand-slam? Napalm?? Good luck with the pit conversion, life's too short for me to bother with that sort carry-on ;-) Jab, I have a question... that build-thread of your F18F is in German... My own Revel F18F is now curing after main coat... I've been following tips from a couple of recent magazine build-reports, and the result is a massive leap for me technically, and my new H&S airbrush has made a big difference over my Chinese knock-off. So massively happy so far. So I'm gonna be another couple weeks doing the Diamondback wing patterns, glossing and decalling. But once I'm into the weathering stage, I'd like to use whatever technique you applied, albeit a little more subtle since this is a CAG-bird. Do you mind repeating how you did it? Thx! i7@3.5Ghz, ATI 5870, 16GB RAM, win7 64bit, TH2GO, Track-IR, 4screen pit, TM WArthog HOTAS
Laud Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 No problem mate! I did the base coat, then post-shading, than clear gloss. After decaling I finished the coating with an enamel clear flat. For the dirt-wash I used water-colors (the ones the small kids use for painting). Make a mixture of black and brown to get your favourite dirt-brown. Now this have to be massively thinned with water (somehow like a puddle on a street). Apply this mixture with your airbrush. At this stage you don't have to care about the amount as a lot will be removed again. You can work bit by bit, and don't have to spray the whole AC in one flow. What you now need is a sponge. Look for the finest structure you can get. Now wet the sponge and press as much water as possible out of it again. Then you can start to gently dipp the surface with the sponge. This will take a long to get a feeling how it works out best. You'll also have to cut different little pieces off the sponge so you can reach every part of the surface. In case you removed to much "dirt" you can simply spray some on again and repeat the procedure. After you're done and the "coat" has cured or better said dried, you can use a rubber to remove it from certain parts (bay doors, panel-lines, etc.). Just try! I did it the first time myself and it was very much "learning by doing". The good thing is, that it is water solvent, so you can always remove it and try again. Once you're done, you're done. There will be no further coating, as that might massively change the appearance of the weathering. hassata Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 Just wow. I'd love to get into this type of thing. Looks like real art, especially the paint schemes. Is it easy to pick up, or are some people just naturally gifted or and built for it. A little of both I suppose. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Laud Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 These days the internet is the best friend of newcomers to the hobby. Study as many build-reports and tutorials as you can find and you should be ready to give it a try. But expect a bit of money it costs to get the basic equipment needed. Start HERE! Jinja Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 (edited) My opinion is that if you ever built a plastic kit as a kid and then stopped once you discovered girls, then you will find it strangely compelling once you give it a go again as an adult. IMHO, it's deffo more 'learnt skill' than requiring inate artistic ability. You just need practice and the right tools. Although once you start doing dioramas and the like, that does become very artistic, but I'm just commenting on a raw, isolated build of a plastic kit. Since you're 1500 posts down Hassata, I'm guessing you're a massive jet fan. Then you have to at least try it! Oh, and to really bring this thread down into the mud, this is exactly what I'm doing while I wait for B6!!!! <runs for cover> Edited February 21, 2011 by Jinja i7@3.5Ghz, ATI 5870, 16GB RAM, win7 64bit, TH2GO, Track-IR, 4screen pit, TM WArthog HOTAS
Jinja Posted February 21, 2011 Posted February 21, 2011 Brilliant summary Jab, you now have an apprentice that will feedback in about 3 weeks! I'll adapt this, probably use my Promodeller washes primarily instead of the water-colours. i7@3.5Ghz, ATI 5870, 16GB RAM, win7 64bit, TH2GO, Track-IR, 4screen pit, TM WArthog HOTAS
ColGray Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 Hassata the main thing is to go slow and take your time also start with an aircraft with few curves like a spitfire... if you try an F-14 right of the bat you'll lose your mind with all the contour lines and panels to paint around!! Jinja Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 (edited) Jab, I said I'd share my Diamondbacks Hornet when I was finished... well, here it is! I REALLY tried to recreate your amazing weathering. But it didn't work for me. It may have been that I different from the paint, I used Promodeller washes rather than the diluted watercolour you used, but it probably had more to do with lack of skill/patience. Again, I found myself rushing towards the end 'cos I just wanted the damn thing finished, but all in all, this is my best result yet. Laud Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 Wow man, that one looks amazing!!! Congrats!!! But why did you chose a glossy finish?? Jinja Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 I didn't choose it so much as that's the way it ended up! I sealed the decals with Future mixed with Tamiya Flat Base. I obviously didn't flat it too much, but I'm okay with that, it doesn't look as shiny in real life. Let's say it's modelled as it would look on a wet day :) i7@3.5Ghz, ATI 5870, 16GB RAM, win7 64bit, TH2GO, Track-IR, 4screen pit, TM WArthog HOTAS
Laud Posted March 12, 2011 Posted March 12, 2011 This damn Future-Stuff isn't available here in Germany, or only for ridiculous high prices... For the last coating (after decaling) I used Revell Flat. The outcome was good for me. But maybe I have to add, that I have not yet used another flat-coat so far... Jinja Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 Well im happy to pos you some. Its sold i. 750gm bottles and only costs 5 euro. Thatll last forever! Laud Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 Sounds cool! Some clever guys here bought it somewhere in the UK, filled it in 100ml bottles and sell it for about 8€... :( I'm always jealous to see the nice and shiny canopys which have been dipped in Future, or the F-16 canopys toned with coloured Future... You're simply screwed without it at some points.
