Hi...Does anyone else hear a ticking sound from the hard drive when Black Shark is working. Its not a problem but, what is it doing? Dont think i'm indexing because when i shut BS down it stops.

My system is Win7 64, 4 megs ram, geforce 470gtx.

cheers

That's the simulated transmission of rotor noise into your system hardware - BS is a very detailed sim...

Normally a strange ticking sound from a harddrive means theres a HD crash not far away. Hope it´s not since its only when DCS is running. Maybe its coming from somewhere else. I would do a backup immediately.

ticking = very bad. i would start backing up your data now. Its usually the little head that reads the magnetic plate that makes this sound and it moves to find data. My guess would be that since DCS has tons of files, models, textures, geometry, etc, that needs to be loaded constantly, this is why the disk head is going crazy at times and thus making a clicking sound a lot more often

Well, on the topic of odd sounds, anyone else get a high pitched screech coming out of their computer when in the DCS: BS multiplayer GUI? Might it be related to the framerate while in the DCS: BS multiplayer screen being like 1300?

Sounds like a sound card/driver issue.

Like others said Chucky, backup your data immediately. 99% sure that this has nothing to do with Black Shark in particular, but with a harddisk which is going to crash very soon.

Hmmmm im not so sure its disk failure. This only happens when BS runs on detailed missions. (not in options screen or setup screens)

Drive is perfect all other times.

Wonder if its 64 bit related. Am i right in saying win 64 absorbs more memory?

Anyway, its not that big an issue as BS runs like a dream.

Thanks again folks

Speed, on the issue of screeching noises. I sometimes hear them coming from my living room. Especially if i spend a lot of time flying.

Not so sure its puter based tho.

i had a strange click come out of my HD in BS few weeks before it got worse and started on some other games, like arma 2

then my HD started having these "seizures" where it started clicking and froze the whole computer for the whole time the clicking sound came out. they took from 10 to 60 seconds.. then i ordered a new HD :P

you should try to strain (or something) your HD and try out if the clicking starts

WOOOOoooooo

I have software that has hard drive stress tests..,, maybe you can find some ont he Internet,, in fact I think most hd makers have some on their websites for download..

ASUS Strix Z790-H, i9-13900, WartHog HOTAS and MFG Crosswind

G.Skill 64 GB Ram, 2TB SSD

EVGA Nvidia RTX 2080-TI (trying to hang on for a bit longer)

Try running a disk defrag... that should stress the drive a fair bit. If it's ticking then I'd consider RMA'ing the drive if it's still covered.

A ticking drive is not something to ignore...

unless of course you don't care about what's on it. :music_whistling:

It could be ticking because you havent defragmented your harddrive for ages, and your harddrive is seeking, the head of the hdd is rapidly moving over the platters looking for info, due to it being fragmented and being all over the place on your hdd, hence the ticking like sound.

If that is the case, then a good defrag should fix it.

Ticking in harddrives in general isnt anything to worry about, all hdd's make a noise, some worse than others. The only time you should really be worried is when your drive starts making weird noises that it has never done before and when you start getting corruption and crashes.

Personally I dont think what your hearing is a sign of a faulty drive, I just think that your drive is needing a good clean out, possibly a good format and a zero wipe and then start again, it could also be caused by the state of your pc, too many things needing access to the hdd at the same time.

Something else could be trying to access the harddrive at the same time as you play the sim ? or it could be caused by your antivirus rapidly scanning every single bit/byte thats being loaded in blackshark, thus causing a slight stutter when the hdd reads, which would make a noise like its ticking.

If its your AV, then disable realtime scanning on reads/writes whilst playing the game and see if that makes a difference.

But, if your pc is fine and having no problems when it comes to crashing, corrupt files etc, which you can scan for, if thats ok then usually you shouldnt have anythign to worry about.

Also, if the S.M.A.R.T when its read by the diagnosis tool from the harddrives manufacturer, if that says the drive is good, then its good.

So you can check and do all these things before thinking its a dead or dieing hdd.

But then again, it could be dieing.
